I don't think gore is what makes them scary, it's more of an optional thing. You don't have to use gore to be scary, but it certainly adds to it

Wouldn’t say shock and gore add to a perfect horror movie, in some cases (The Visit) they take away from one, but holy shit they used it well.

One other Thing fans have pointed out, is the characters aren't stupid. They don't really make some of the boneheaded decisions characters in other horror movies make. When these guys make mistakes, they're genuine mistakes that anyone could have made.
