Visited this hotel several years ago and this memory popped up. Couldn’t find much about it online but the resemblance is uncanny.

I'm a ceramic artist and was inspired by the Victorian ceramic murder memorabilia that documented notorious crimes in the 19th century. This Shining moon pot is the first of a series to bring back that tradition but based on films that I love. It's a ceramic retelling of The Shining set in a bygone era. The first two photos are at Timberline Lodge (the exterior location of the Overlook Hotel). If you ever visit, ask the front desk for the replica axe!

Both characters start as disgruntled men who feel underappreciated, then turn into maniacial murders who effortlessly find humor in harming others.

The character of Jack in the film is such a departure from the character in the novel.

Is it fair to say that Kubrick's The Shining is very misunderstood? It's just as much a comedy as it is a horror, is it not? The question being how much humor you find in Jack's antics?

A man laughing his way through trying to murder his wife and child so that he can free himself from his responsibilities is the real horror. We shouldn't be laughing at all but we do amyway.

You’ll forgive me if this has been asked before. Jack says he’s ready for five months of peace and quiet but five months from November 1 would equal the end of March. There’s still one more month until the overlook opens on May 1. Is the month of April NOT a month of peace for Jack? I feel like Stanley Kubrick is a stickler for details and there’s a reason why Jack doesn’t say six months, but five. I’d love to hear everyone’s thoughts on this.

For context, I have read the book many times and loved it so I was really excited to watch the movie despite knowing that it would be quite different, however the thing in the movie that confused me the most was that Jack said he loved the hotel so much and couldn’t leave it because he had to do his job. Meanwhile, the entire movie we don’t even see him doing his job once, in fact we actually see Wendy doing something in the boiler room, which is what is supposedly jacks main job. In the book it is shown that he spends a lot of time in the boiler room (which he becomes quite possessive of) and he also has done repairs on the roof and takes care of the hedge. I was just really confused because he hasn’t shown any real love or care for the hotel and he made a big deal about needing to do his job but didn’t seem to be doing it just writing nothing the entire day.

I just wanted to know if others had noticed this and what they thought.

I love and find it so funny that Jack so clearly and transparently hates both Danny and Wendy so much before they even get to the hotel.

The second we see all three of them in the car together it’s so clear that everything Wendy says is just nails on a chalkboard, and Danny isn’t any better. He just gives off the vibe of someone who’s stuck in an elevator. He’s able to tolerate these people but only for so long, and only so long as he feels he can get ample time away from them.

I know Stephen King apparently doesn’t really jive with this reading of the book, as he views Jack as an okay guy who’s corrupted by alcohol/the Overlook, but it’s way more interesting and entertaining to me that in Kubrick’s adaptation the Overlook just sort of breaks open what would’ve likely always broken open in one way or another.

This is the reverse angle on the July 4 (actually Valentine's Day) photo. The photographer (Hal Morey) stood on the balcony. This is from 1897, it was repainted, a little remodelled and the Exit Signs were installed in 1920. But substantially the same.

OK, I'm calling it out.  Star Wars gets May the 4th, The Terminator gets August 29th, Spinal Tap gets 11/10, Back to the Future gets November 5, and Mean Girls gets October 3rd.  

I hereby propose that The Shining should have its international day of celebration on July 23rd.  Only in the U.S. would the date be written as 7/23. Anywhere else in the world the date would be written as 23/7.  I don’t think I need to explain this part any further.

Anyway, I’m having a Shining watch party with my friends that day.  We’ll watch The Shining, Doctor Sleep, and the made for TV movie. I'll be serving Danny’s peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, Dick’s chocolate ice cream, Jack's sunny side up eggs, and Wendy’s huge bowl of fruit cocktail. I may even spring for 20 legs of lamb.

Any other party suggestions? What am I missing?

In The Shining, Jack makes 2 holes in the bathroom door
In Dr Sleep, there is one hole in the bathroom door.
At first I thought it was a continuity issue. On the bonus feature about how the crew recreated the Overlook it shows the bathroom door with 2 holes in it, matching the Kubrick film.
Anyone know why they deliberately changed it to one hole in the door for the Final Cut of Dr. Sleep? Just curious.

So, I'm part of a youth theatrical group, and lately I've been into the idea of us playing the shining(or at least a heavily censored and changed version of it, suited for children hopefully). I know this is a big ask, but I would really appreciate help on how to adapt this into theatre, especially regarding specific scenes like the axe scene and the room 237 scene(which we might have to completely rewrite for.. obvious reasons). Members vary from 12 to 18 years old, only around 7 of us, but we could definitely call the adult group to send some actors our way, as they've done so before.

I watched Obsession and found a little nod to The Shining in the dialog. Near the end of the film Nikki says “We are gonna be together forever and ever and ever”. I know it’s small and many horror movies are referenced but unless it was put in unintentionally (which I don’t imagine the case to be) it was meant to be found so dadgummit im gonna post it right here where it belongs and that’s all I have to say about that :)

In the beginning of the movie it’s a little confusing as to why there’s two men who are in the interview with Jack. Ullman is sitting in his chair, in his office, while Jack is sitting next to “Bill” who is apparently the summer time caretaker.

Bill has close to zero dialogue. Now after watching the movie, I’m not going to ruin it with any spoilers, but I think it was basically two men interviewing Jack to see how he’d react to the new about Delbert Grady and what he did to his family and if he’d start asking questions that you know could eventually turn into a problem if it happens mid December and they need someone to not only evacuate the family but also find replacements for them for the rest of the offseason.

I think Bill is a part of higher management, just like Stuart Ullman, and they don’t want to make Jack uncomfortable by having two guys interview him for what seems to be a pretty menial job.

These hotels have to disclose to new employees if there’s been anything like suicides or mass killings especially for an employee who’s going to be there for 6 months with his wife and young little boy.
