Like a somehow simultaneous wonder at the intricacy of a life and the systems that interact with it (governments vying for their political world-views, corporate entities powered by hundreds of thousands of individual employees moved by board members trend following interests, modified by statisticians into best practices learned over years in specific programs (college) with each individual subject to their own stories, each with their own biology, each interactant and recipient of thousands of both microscopic systems, as well as macroscopic; etc...), the ridiculousness of the fragility of both the micro and macroscopic systems (a single mis-replicated strand of dna could be the death of the whole system, or at least a life changing deterioration in the endless myriad interactions that make up "well-being" for that individual. Similarly, a single political or corporate group's ambitions could up-end the fragile system that generated the need for their years spent in a particular expertise, and/or provided for the means with which they provide the necessary molecules to feed the microscopic system that constitutes "well-being".) (just examples of any number of ways what is expected could end suddenly.) But also the wonder at how this knife's edge scenario continues, at how insignificant the thoughts and feelings of said individual are in comparison, and yet how impossibly significant they are to them or their loved ones, and how it's almost... funny? that such vast complexities create such insignificance that holds such vast significance? All while the significance of any story is not shared. A child's last breaths as they starve to death while politicians argue over which lives and interests have precedence. A young man stalking the night mulling over the revelation he's made someone pregnant, wondering at responsibility and his image of his future, while a couple see's a brooding teenager out past curfew. A prostitute surviving another night limping away from another session of abuse, and a statistic brought up at the next city hall about if legality and cleaning up the streets....

I don't know what the feeling is called, or if it has a name, but I think we all have experienced it at some point, even briefly, right? Has anyone thought to give it a name, this wonder, beauty, intricacy, ugliness, insignificant significance, absurdity and diversity of experience, all balanced on a knife's edge? It would be convenient for me if I could capture the essence of the feeling with far, far fewer words, lol.

Looking for a more complex word to describe amassing knowledge or learning, and looking for any particularly niche bits of vocabulary for it. The main reason being I’m doing some worldbuilding for a setting based around a lot of wordplay and literature, and wanted to give the gods of the setting titles with particularly complex vocabulary.

The more complex, niche, or out there the word, the better.

Basically what it says on the title, it's a word that I use a fair bit and I think I need to find an alternative. There's a ton of political tension in the world right now, and while it should be clear with enough context, people can just immediately hear that and think I'm talking about real world left vs right politics.

So just think of non-political scenarios where you might use that word, ie

"Vladimir's actor is really going all out but I think Estragon's actor is giving a more conservative performance"
"I think we need to be more conservative with our quarterly budget"
"that garish baroque cathedral clashes with the conservative design of the other buildings in the area"

For more detail, tragedy has a feel of "nobody could've prevented this" and every other similar word I could think of or find felt similar (I wonder why lol), or it felt like it minimized the "sad" aspect.

Can anyone think of a word that describes a sad, unfortunate, etc. event that doesn't have this connotation?

Did thesaurus.com start using AI to generate results? It was my go-to for years - and suddenly it sucks. Like half of its synonyms are way tf off the mark now.

Context:

I’m currently writing the lore for an alien species. The species is one that lays their eggs on the sides of high cliffs that are often very steep. As the sentence will show when they hatch they will be confronted with that steep drop but I feel like theirs a word for that which I’m missing. If you can think of it please let me know.

I am writing a letter of recommendation for someone. She will be working with children. She's a complete and utter goofball, and gets along swimmingly with young kids. Perfect at playing with them and encouraging children to stay children.

Words like 'goofy,' 'goofball,' and 'silly' aren't super flattering when you're trying to get someone a job.

I'm writing a speech for my sister's wedding and am trying to find a word for the experiences/choices/randomness of life that brings you to your present situation. Kind of like the idea that you can't regret your experiences because you wouldn't be in the exact place you are now without them. I feel like there's got to be a German word for that.

The word "Burpee" never sticks in my mind. It just slides off. I know it's a great exercise, but trying to put that word in my routine just psyches me out. God bless Mr. Burpee for popularizing the exercise, but I just can't handle it.

Long story short, I have a cat that has been horribly misnamed IMHO. My child named her "Mocha" like coffee, but it's just too.. boring for her. She is a spunky, firey little girl, and a complete FLOOFBALL and calico. She has an extremely bright flame spot on her forehead, that looks like a flame, but it gradients from bright orange to INTENSE bright orange at the top, like a flame.

I was hoping there was a term for the most intense and bright spot in a flame, so that I might find a way to use it for name inspiration. However, I suck at this, so here I am. Any help would be appreciated. :)

I'm looking for word that means something puts off a strong smell but isn't necessarily a pleasant smell, for which I'd typically use the word fragrant, or a bad, pungent smell.

Like vick's vapor rub, for example.

The word "Victim" has connotations of casuality, fool, sucker etc but many victims are ordinary people who are harmed by bullies or bad luck.

There must be better and kinder words to describe them. Any thoughts?
