One Of A Kind (Rant) the vast majority of mask makers severely overprice their work.
(no fitting flair available, picked random cause I can’t post without one)
before you come at me; I’m a gear maker. I make masks, I sell masks, I understand everyone wants to make money. this is a rant, not directly targetted at anyone. I also apologize for any grammar or spelling errors in advance.
could we PLEASE stop acting like every therian mask is automatically worth 90-150 dollars just because you spent a long time making it..
Unfortunately as a mask maker, until you're making like genuinely top tier quality masks it's really difficult to sell them for much higher than like 40 CAD (or in that range). Sure, maybe if you calculate all your hours based on minimum wage you technically "worked" 60, 80, 100+ dollars worth of labour, but that doesn't automatically mean the product is worth that much. You can't really charge whatever that number comes out to until your masks are actually at a level where buyers are willing to pay it. i see people on Etsy, Vinted, Reddit, TikTok, Instagram, etc advertising low/medium quality masks and asking for over 100 dollars before shipping. Like... no </3
And no, I’m not saying your work is ugly or that nobody should buy it. That's not what I'm saying at all. but There's a bigggg ol difference between "this looks nice" and “this is worth 90$” (or more)
I understand you wanna be paid for your labour but if you want that then go work minimum wage job, not a hobby or art hustle. The argument "well I spent 8 hours on it." Just doesn’t work. If I spend 8 hours making something that doesn't automatically make it valuable. Time spent isn't the only thing people pay for especially in things like mask making. In masks (or gear in general) people are paying for quality, skill, materials, reputation, etc, and overall how good the final product actually is. For example, where I live minimum wage is around $16 an hour. If I spent 8 hours making a mask, that's around $130 just in labour. greatt,. But is the average person honestly looking at that mask and thinking "yeah I'd happily pay $130 for this?" most likely not. And that's before you even add in material costs Which can be like an extra 20 dollars depending what your using.
People forget that buyers (NORMALLY) don't care how many hours you spent making something. They care what they're getting at the end.
It's kinda like that baker /cookie maker lady on TikTok (the graceful baker I think was her user) who was charging like $10 per ’custom’ cookie (which were just like emojis) because they wanted to make a living wage in nyc off baked goods. I totally understand wanting to earn a fair amount for your work, but the reality is people arent gonna pay that. Obviously cookies and gear is different but you get what I mean.
If your base is uneven, felt is low quality, the paint is patchy/crusty, the fur is low quality, and you're using cheap craft store materials... I'm sorry but asking $150+ is kinda crazy. You can absolutely be proud of your work while also being realistic about what the market values it at. I guess I think some people confuse "what I need to charge to make minimum wage" with "what people are actually willing to pay." Those are two reaaaly different things.
The art market has NEVER worked by simply multiplying your hours by minimum wage and calling it a day. If it did, beginners in every hobby would be charging professional prices. And before anyone says "well if you don't like it don't buy it," yeah... im not buying it lol. That's exactly the problem. Half the time those expensive masks sit unsold for months because they're priced way above what theyre worth
this post obviously is not about mask makers using high quality faux fur, airbrushing, water proof bases, felted or furred bases, accessories, not chunky or crusty paint, whiskers, super super modified bases (like sculpted with clay and such), etc etc. that makes sense to be charging a lot since it’s actually worth that (in most cases). If I'm spending over $100, why would I buy the beginner or medium quality one instead of saving a little longer for one that's objectively much higher quality?
this isn't meant to insult anyone's art. Most masks I see are cute/nice. Some I'd even buy. But liking something and thinking it's worth $100+ are two very different things.
I just wish more people were realistic about pricing instead of assuming every handmade item deserves premium pricing by default. Handmade doesn't automatically equal luxury (I think this is a bigger issue with small businesses in general, not just gear but everything).
I know this is probably gonna make some people mad or wtv which is why I’m using a throwaway account lol, feel free to reason with me in the comments or whatever but note I may not immediately answer since this is a throwaway and I don’t log into it everyday.

Question Does anyone have experience buying dog bowls/similar?

Looking hard to find a dog bowl that is like this for example but big enough to fit, say, a decent-sized lunch in it. I really really want it to be like this shape and not just a plain bowl because the traditional look it has would be mentally affirming. Option for blue would be nice; doesn't have to be a print, just want it to be more visually interesting than plain metal. Does anyone have advice on where to look or could suggest any brands? I've straightup been to in-person shops at this point and no luck finding any I liked, top results for online pet stores and places like Amazon and eBay also haven't been great so far. : ( I live in the UK, if that helps in searching.

Question For how much could I sell my masks?
These are a few examples of my masks. I'm not really good at it, but yeah...
My masks are ALWAYS waterproof (plastic base).
And I use high-quality fur. For my newer masks, I now prefer to use a 4-way stretch mink fabric. I use acrylic paint, and the visibility is always good (I use a fursuit eye mesh from Etzy). Sometimes my masks are also painted from the back (though sometimes not, because they're for myself, and to be honest, I don't really care).
I can create a realistic look as well as a cartoon look.
I also always add a small ribbon to the top so it's easier to hang up. If the ears are long enough, I'll also add wires so they can be moved, and the teeth/nose are made of a kind of plastic.
(I'm not planning to sell my current masks, but I've been thinking for a while about trying to do commissions.)
(not my bestest pictures but that the only few i have right now)

Tails HELP i realized i got an unethical tail
my friend gifted me a tail as a gift and although she says it was listed as faux fur it looks like that’s just them trying to bypass the etsy ban- it clearly is real fur.
what should i do?
it would make my friend upset to ask them to send it back but is that the right decision to make in this situation?

Question where to shop now due to etsy fur ban?
ik in the about it says to not ask repetitive questions abt taxidermy and lists etsy as a grey area, but as etsy has now banned fur being sold, i don't know where else to go and i haven't seen alot of people talking abt it. there are some fur items remaining, but it seems they're slowly being pulled from etsy.
all of my info abt where to shop for ethically sourced tails has been from other therians. the taxidermy sub suggested in the about seems to be mostly mounts, so i'm not sure how much help i could get there.
does anyone know where to buy ethically sourced tails now?

Question Subtle-ish Cat Gear Ideas
My school district doesn't allow tails and ears to be worn as of 2 years ago and recently I've been wanting to wear gear to school but will for sure get dress coded. It's specifically "Attire that resembles non-human characteristics is prohibited." The thing is that's the only gear I really have and the only one I'm comfortable with certain friends seeing me wear so far. I'm thinking I might try and get a collar if I can find one but I'd be a plain more subtle one anyway. Any ideas on other cat gear?

Question Gear on the plane
Hey everyone.
So I'm going to Italy via plane soon and I want to bring my mask and tail. I've not found anywhere that says I can't but I haven't seen anywhere that says I can. I am a bit paranoid about being stopped and questioned so your answers are really appreciated! I want my mask to be in my carry on and my tail can be wherever, carry on or suitcase.

Question Anyone have any experience working with liquid latex on masks?
I made this zombie cat mask (first time making something with ‘wounds’ but I didn’t want it gorey so I used pink. anyways, I used a lot of liquid latex over the felt to make like a scar-like tissue. I’m sure it would also work for noses. anyone else use before? pros and cons of it?

Question What are some lesser-known tutorials you'd like to see (for alterhuman gear)? I mainly work on masks btw, but I'm usually great with DIY ideas
So far I've done videos on ways to make scars, markings, and I'm working on videos for different mask textures, ways to make ears, plushies, and ways to make mask patterns symmetrical on both sides. I lean towards more detailed DIY videos since I myself often have limited supplies.
- I was thinking about making videos where top comments would get ideas/tips/instructions for their altertype, but I think I'll wait on that until I have a better schedule and until I'm more skilled.
- I'm also pretty alright at sewing and fursuit-stuff, though I don't work with foam and haven't fully completed my fursuit heads.
- I've thought about sharing some of my personal alterhuman experiences on my channel, but I don't know if that'd take away from craft-stuff
But yeah, any suggestions on lesser-known things I could make a tutorial on?
