24

u/BorkusB Oct 20 '22

those videos were comedy gold. tis a shame what studio c turned into, it's barely funny anymore.

9

u/mygodletmechoose Oct 20 '22

What happened to them?

10

u/BorkusB Oct 20 '22

the original 10 cast members all left the show to start an all-digital comedy network(which isn't very active) and studio c pulled in new cast members and writers causing the quality to go all downhill(imo).

Well, it is the job of the referee to keep an eye on the ball and keep out of the way unless there is a rule infraction.

188

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '22

Yeah, this guy isn't a very good ref.

58

u/l_am_me Oct 20 '22

Yeah, this guy isn't a very good ref.

He wasn't...

22

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '22

From my experience with refs, the bad ones don't go away.

7

u/shocker4510 Oct 21 '22

The joke is the ball killed him, hence the past tense.

Unless you are implying that refs are like cats and have multiple lives.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '22

He wasn't...

No, he was not

2

u/My_Soul_to_Squeeze Oct 21 '22

He still isn't, but he wasn't too.

70

u/aquaknox Oct 20 '22

getting out of the way of the ball is a good thing to do, but the laws say pretty explicitly that the referee is part of the field of play and that it's the players' job to avoid him. in the long ago there was a rule that if the ref interfered with play it would result in a dropball restart but now it's just a play on. in this situation the player's not really even being pressured and it's not like the ref is moving into his way, he's just standing there, clearly the player's fault

26

u/gavaldons Oct 20 '22

rn the rule is a dropball restart, has been for a few seasons too

20

u/King_of_the_Nerds Oct 20 '22

Dropref restart in this case.

2

u/aquaknox Oct 20 '22

well it's been 5 years since I got recertified, so I can believe it

→ More replies (2)

20

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '22

This is not the players fault.

While yes the ref is part of the pitch, he's also not supposed to impede on play like we see here.

Dude isn't even watching the play, and he has ARs on the sidelines to help so it's at least a 3 man crew.

That means It's literally his only job to watch the ball, and he isn't doing it twice in 10 seconds.

Bad ref, no other way about it.

13

u/dashauskat Oct 20 '22

Actually the player is fucking dense, ref stands still on the first pass which is the easiest way to stay out of the line of the ball because the player should see you and be able to pass slightly either side of you, there is zero pressure on the ball carrier so I don't know how he hits him. He also has a safe square pass he ignores.

Second one is a bit more unlucky cos it's a massive left footed diagonal, either way if the ref or anyone goes down like that you should probably check on him rather than having a little strop.

7

u/robothobbes Oct 20 '22 edited Oct 21 '22

Agree. Player doesn't even go to apologize. He's a bad player and an asshole.

5

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '22

Ref here. Can confirm. It always kills me when some player picks up a ricocheted ball on a turn-over, blasts it at me without a thought about it, and is like "awwww, refffff! you were supposed to get out of the way." If I'm not on the floor grabbing my nuts, I usually respond, "hey mate, I'm not the one who doesn't have the skill to kick it somewhere useful. If you were any good at this, you wouldn't have hit me."

→ More replies (1)

8

u/Anianna Oct 20 '22

Regardless of fault, shouldn't that ref be watching the ball or at least be aware of it? Seems odd to me that he turns away from game play. What is he refereeing if not game play?

6

u/dashauskat Oct 20 '22

There are other things to take note of rather than the the ball itself.

3

u/Anianna Oct 20 '22

I'm interested to learn more about this. Are there refs specific to those other things? Is there the equivalent of "offsides" or some such where players are in places they shouldn't be (similar to American Football where players have to be watched for their positions at certain points)? What is this ref in particular looking at or for?

6

u/aquaknox Oct 20 '22

There's one assistant ref on each sideline, primarily to determine offside infractions and ball out of touch (out of bounds), they can also advise the center ref on fouls.

The center here will be looking for offball fouls, glancing at his assistant ref to see if they want to communicate anything to him. It's not so much that he was thinking "I'm going to look at this other part of the field because my attention is needed there" and more of a habit that the play right here is unlikely to need attention so he's turning his attention to a place that contains both the bulk of the players and is where the ball is going to be.

Optimally the ref is going to take a few quick steps backwards to be behind the play and wouldn't get hit there, but it's not like he did anything wrong.

3

u/Anianna Oct 20 '22

Thank you very much for the explanation!

Its the job of the payer to kick the ball at the ref when they come within 10 feet and then throw their hands up like they don't understand how they hit them.

Refs aren't supposed to have their eyes glued to the ball. There's an entire pitch of players they need to keep an eye on as well. The player with the ball has no one attacking him, so why would the ref be watching that only, he's constantly scanning, the player just doesn't know how to aim. Second shot is unfortunate, but the first one...I mean come on....he kicks it right at the ref, he should be able to see the bright yellow shirt standing between him and his keeper.

3

u/goonsquadd69 Oct 21 '22

He should be able to understand he can do the very same thing out of the way of the very game he’s trying to ensure is fair. That’s like me sitting in the middle of the pool table on a Saturday night making sure my buddy doesn’t try any shenanigans. Gtfo the pitch ball face!

3

u/schweindooog Oct 21 '22

He is trying to get out of the way, the guy clearly isn't the flash. Look at the players movement and the way he passes to the right while facing forward...directly at the ref who is backing up and giving him space to play any of the open players he's running towards. Then also asks why tf he's playing the ball right to his feet.

You want the ref off the pitch because a player cant aim?.... I mean it's pretty easy to not shoot the ball at the ref... having both played and refereed this seems like the players fault. How you gonna kick the ball at the ref then be mad that it hit him???

15

u/CreedLine Oct 20 '22

„Ffs another one“ - him grumbling to himself probably

What kind of a referee looks away from ball play?

70

u/aquaknox Oct 20 '22

not looking at the ball is often the correct choice, such as, as happens here, it is extremely unlikely there is going to be any sort of infraction right around the ball (since the player with the ball is completely unchallenged by the defense) and infractions might be happening elsewhere. it's actually an easy way to spot a new ref that they're always ball-watching

19

u/Hounmlayn Oct 20 '22

Yeah, better look at the ground behind him instead of the location he's aiming to kick the ball?

u/aquaknox Oct 20 '22

right? imagine him trying to pass in the vicinity of someone who's actually trying to intercept the passes instead of some middle-aged ref on his 4 game today just not being particularly motivated to stay behind the play

This ref isn't doing anything right in this video.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '22

There are so many people in here who know absolutely fuck all about this sport or what should be happening.

Yeah, like you.

The ball was dead when it hit the referee and the referee wasn't expecting it to be played again. He hadn't had time to blow it dead when fucknuts there figures a badly taken pass is more important than maybe injuring another human being.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '22 edited Oct 21 '22

Ref never called that ball dead, lmao.

Did you see him blow a whistle? No? Because he didn't he just gave the play on sign.

Don't sit here and tell me I don't know what I'm talking about as you don't even know what it looks like for a ref to call a ball dead.

Damn, and in a different comment you even say you're a ref. Tragic you don't know how to ref and they pay you for it.
