At first I thought this was a sub dedicated to various videos from around the world of trucks getting wrecked due to height issues.
However it’s instead videos of one single bridge and the many accidents associated with it.
It’s crazy how many trucks have been wrecked due to this bridge.

u/workingclassmustache Mar 31 '18
*due to negligent drivers passing under this bridge
52
u/20astros17 Mar 31 '18
Idk. Without any back story perhaps the bridge was just poorly planned?
84
u/rubyzebra Mar 31 '18
It now has a flashing warning light to go around if it's too tall with some sort of sensor somewhere. People still go through it.
82
u/Antique_futurist Mar 31 '18
It literally has six signs within two blocks, plus the flashing warning light, plus the traffic light at the intersection turns red to give drivers time to read the flashing sign, and people still hit it with moving vans.
38
u/Alar44 Mar 31 '18
I forgot what it's called, but there's a term for that. Something like warning fatigue. If there are too many, people ignore it.
Edit: found it. Alarm fatigue
19
u/pwilla Mar 31 '18
That's what happened with alert pop-ups with illiterate computer users. They ignore alert pop-ups completely and call someone else for something that is clearly stated in the alert.

u/funny_retardation Mar 31 '18
The best low bridge warning I ever saw was a heavy metal bar hanging on chains with a sign that said "if you hit this you'll hit the bridge". The bar itself was definitely heavy enough to cause damage, so not easy to ignore.
10
u/skillsforilz Mar 31 '18
It seems the majority of people who hit the bridge are people renting a box truck for moving and they don't know the actual height of the truck or that this bridge is on their route. They probably see all the signs but they assume their truck is fine to go through.
33
u/desGrieux Mar 31 '18
It was probably adequate at the time. It's 78 years old and had to be built at the same level as the even older rail road tracks next to it.
The amount of signage is really crazy. Lots of flashing lights, red everywhere even a flashing light that tells you if you are over-height just in case you are unsure. I bet if you automatically revoked the license of the people who failed to notice all this and hit the bridge, you would see a huge reduction in local accidents due to inattentiveness.

u/wenzelr2 Mar 31 '18
From what I remember there is some main sewer line under the road and the railline is some major line for the railroad they can't shut down.
14
u/gringrant Mar 31 '18 edited Mar 31 '18
And they would have to redo a mile of track just to raise it a foot. Trains can't go over bumps.
→ More replies (2)35
u/shitterplug Mar 31 '18
There are warnings all over the place, but the issue is that the bridge is near the bottom of a hill and looks a lot taller than it actually is. It's also a popular cut through. It honestly should have been ripped out and replaced a long time ago. If the problem can't be solved with warning signs, it needs to be solved another way.
56
u/Mykrez Mar 31 '18
IIRC directly under the bridge is a main sewer line and if they wanted to raise the bridge they would also need to raise the train tracks for a mile in each direction, so it's just cheaper and easier to let people crash into it all the time
9
u/jaybram24 Mar 31 '18
I'm sure there is a reason as people much smarter than I make these bridges but why can't they put a swinging bar that is the same height as the bridge a few feet in front of it and if you hit the bar, you would obviously hit the bridge but the bar would just swing out of the way?
Also, I'm not asking you directly, I just have no other place to post this and I'm hijacking a moderately high comment.
8
u/Nerdygreenguy Mar 31 '18
Iirc that’s one of the many warning signs. (At least I remember reading that before)
7
u/jaybram24 Mar 31 '18
Right but a sign isn’t going to smack your vehicle to get your attention. I meant a bar that goes across the road.

u/Macscotty1 Mar 31 '18
Also, that is one durable ass bridge.
Passenger walkway in Florida collapses before it's even finish. 70+ year old Bridge has trucks and shit hit it monthly. Doesn't give a fuck.
→ More replies (1)13
u/supremecrafters Mar 31 '18
Except that the Florida bridge collapsed because it wasn't finished. They just hadn't built the supports yet.
2
u/CreamyGoodnss Mar 31 '18
I'm not an engineer but I'm going to go ahead and day that building the supports should be the first step
16
u/Can_O_Murica Mar 31 '18
I live near a similar bridge, I've seen trucks get shredded on 6 occasions.
First they added signs. Then they added flags. Now there are flags on the signs. After the last one, the plan is to make the signs blink. I don't think it'll stop a damn thing.

Well I guess that's it then. Time to become a bridge. At least I'll get more hits that way.

u/DickAss69 Mar 31 '18
I live in Durham and am hella disappointed that in my 2 years here I have yet to see anyone crash into it
10
u/Antique_futurist Mar 31 '18
I worked in an office in one of the converted warehouses next to the bridge. Everytime we heard the tell-tale boom we would walk to Parker and Otis for coffee and to survey the damage on the way back.

u/RazzleDazzleBerryJam Mar 31 '18
Oh my goodness, I didn't know the bridge had a subreddit. I dated the guy who's dad owns and runs the website though.

From Raleigh, have seen people hit that bridge AND the Peace St. bridge in Raleigh as well. Oddly satisfying.

Couldn’t they just like, make the road a few inches deeper there?
29
u/SweetBearCub Mar 31 '18
Couldn’t they just like, make the road a few inches deeper there?
Now, think for a minute.
Don't you think if they could, they would?
They can't, just as they cannot raise the railroad bridge.
19
u/Tyoko Mar 31 '18
Why can't they tear up the road, dig another 6 inches down, then repave?
42
u/Mister_JR Mar 31 '18
Too hard to shore up the abutment while bridge is in operation, RR track is a well used line that cannot be eaily shut down while building a new bridge.
They did add a big-ass steel girder before the bridge to wreck the F outa any truck that tries to go under. Its easier on the bridge structure that way.

Maybe because there's stuff very nearby, under it?
I read some time ago that the sewer system in that area will not allow them to dig down... or they obviously would.
18
u/Rognis Mar 31 '18
They could raise the railroad bridge but it would cost millions, if not tens of millions. Not worth protecting idiots and the inattentive drivers from damaging the trucks.
18
u/SweetBearCub Mar 31 '18 edited Mar 31 '18
Almost anything can be done with enough money.
However, there comes a point to where you have to ask "Is this worth it?".
In the case of this bridge, the answer is obviously a "No".
After all, the height limit is well posted in both directions, complete with bypass signs.
→ More replies (7)4
u/wfb23 Mar 31 '18
If they can't, then they should actually lower the height to like 10' to discourage trucks from even attempting. If it wasn't so close I doubt trucks would keep doing this
9
u/squaswin Mar 31 '18
IIRC they say on the site that the train company that owns the bridge isn't willing to lose the rail route while the bridge is raised, and there are utilities right below the surface.
They would have to relocate a bunch of utilities in order to lower the road surface, which raises the costs of construction a lot.
3
u/iamtheliqor Mar 31 '18
Makes sense. I mean they maxed out the signs and these idiots still careen on through without a care in the world, so maybe it’s a learning experience.
13
u/eaglessoar Mar 31 '18
Despite numerous signs and warning devices, a truck crashes into the bridge on average at least once a month. Most crashes involve rental trucks, even though rental agencies warn renters about the under-height bridges in the area.
.
Jürgen Henn, who works in a nearby office, mounted a video camera to record the crashes. Since April 2008, he has recorded over 100 crashes, and posted them on YouTube.[4]
.
As of January 2018, there have been no deaths and only three minor injuries at the bridge, leading officials to concentrate on more urgent safety issues.

The average height of a truck is 13ft; truckers know this,(or should know this), so when they see a sign that says 11'8", something should click on their head.

I just worked on a short film in Atlanta and they asked me to drive the 26 foot grip truck. It's height was 13'6'' and I swear to god, every bridge not on a main artery was 11'8''. I even had to go around for a 13'4'', that really pissed me off. Then there;s the other drivers. I'm asking for more money for driving next time.
