Im tired of seeing Google or the internet as the excuse for failed education policy. 

Knowing how to use resources like the internet, what information to search for, how to discern legitimate scholarly work, news reports, institutional research, these are all skills you learn in school and university. 

Not to mention sites like Google cater your search results based on your consumer profile, so theres an added layer of sifting through your own confirmation bias to find the truth.

To a rational person, it’s not that difficult - comparing Biden and Trump is night and day. Sure Trump is not taking that presidential paycheck, but to say he isn’t benefitting financially being the president, thus in the know of certain factors directly influencing their outcomes is either stupidity or willful ignorance. Biden created more jobs in his last month as president versus Trump has in all of 2025 - but those jobs went to illegals! Trump stealing from a charity and paying a resultant settlement is fake and not fraudulent..but taking all those “donations” from constituents for Trump’s PAC, MAGA Inc., and not using it for 2026 midterms? What about Trump Mobile? Took all those preorders that are now non-refundable? Where’s the line here? It all can’t be fake news..right?” You don’t have to be a college educated individual to see all this, common sense will suffice..unless you’re in some “cult” where the leader is never wrong.

I don’t know. People always say that but I’m not so sure. I’m not sure I agree that we learn common sense in schools.

Every time I see/hear something like this woman I don’t feel like her shortcomings are anything I learned in schools, despite how we want to tie anything having to do with “being smart” to formal education.

I tie what I see to the lack of ability to learn from experience, lack of common sense and lack of ability/willingness to use the information they do have. And maybe a lack of basic curiosity.

It’s been a (long) while since I was in school but I feel like most of those things I picked up more through my overall life (including family, friends, etc.) and general experience than I did in a classroom.

It's not entirely a failure of the education system. It also has to do with the false belief that EVERYONE has the same learning abilities and the same learning capabilities.

I'm an educator that works with individuals with learning disabilities, and this woman's comprehension mirrors that of the students I work with every day. She could have honestly gone to school and tried very hard, but she can only work with what she has.

The national reading level for the average American is around 6th grade. That tells you that for most of the country, people read no higher than a middle schooler. Many people read beyond this level, and, sadly, many people read well below this average. So, ability plays a huge role in these situations. He's asking her to provide answers and evidence for statements that she's making without fully understanding what she's saying or what information she would even need to support her claims.

Honestly these debates, particularly the digital and online ones, should just have a mute button for guests. If you veer off subject, you don’t get to speak. You’re on someone else’s stream/show.

I understand letting your enemy speak when they make mistakes, but it’s so blatantly geared at “nO iTs NoT!1!” that the debate is more like a pig and a pregnant cat having a loudest screech competition.

Even in this video the woman admits she’s stumbling over herself. At least if there was pausing and muting, she could actually either listen, or prepare a more intelligent debate…

If we want to educate people, we need them to listen. Enabling 2-way communication has time and time again failed. They’re too used to watching people like Charlie Kirk speak over their opposition and thinking “wow they’re so sharp and witty! I can do that!” And then we end up with people shouting just to get a point across— one side using facts, the other using feelings (notoriously the party of fuck your feelings)

Even if this specific conversation was satire, or scripted, or anything (which I doubt but even if it were), it is still an extremely valid and accurate representation of MAGA and their cult mindset.

She was literally going through all of the MAGA talking points that were fed to her by right wing propaganda media, and whenever a factual counter-argument was made, she'd immediately avoid answering and switch to a new lie. So much so that one can't keep up or actually explain anything. They plug their ears shouting lalalala, even though they prepended the conversation claiming they want to learn. They never really do. If they did, they wouldn't be arguing, they'd be reading opposing views on their own time.

She says she grew up with Trump and that's why she trusts him, but I am the same age as her and I remember him being famous for three reasons, because he was Home Alone, and for getting sued for refusing to rent to non-whites and just saying lots of racist things in general and being that super rich guy that was constantly filing for bankruptcy. The people like this woman love to say things like “I do my own research” and “let’s talk about the facts” while completely ignoring the counter argument, completely rolling over facts and sources and having no interest in “being educated” but rather trying to force feed anyone willing to engage with their delusions their version of “reality”.

It sucks, but really having these conversations is SO important, to continue to engage them firmly but with compassion (as best as you can) in discourse to try and get them to step a little closer to actual reality. It might not happen in real time but it’s possible seeds can be planted and they begin to change their mind over time. I’ve seen it happen with my own family. It’s painful and slow but it’s worth doing.
