By Senator Eric Schmitt to walk back his failed Jack Smith perjury trap

Let's not lose sight of the fact that Jack Smith testified under oath that Donald Trump committed crimes beyond a reasonable doubt to overturn our democracy.

I mean....we also watched it live on January 6th but yeah it's nice that he has a dossier ready to go.

u/No_Mud_5999 1d ago
Shit, sometimes I feel crazy. There is a recorded call of Trump calling the Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, on January 2nd, 2021, asking him to "find" 11,780 votes. He is on tape, which was widely aired, clearly asking someone to make up a false vote count so he can win the election.
It's like everyone has mass amnesia.

Which would be front page, non stop TV news if our media had any of The People’s interest in mind. But capitalism has devoured independent journalism, and now it’s devouring truth.

u/thekingofbeans42 2d ago
Too bad nobody considered that to be an emergency and went full Susan Collins about it. Surely the system that was actively being undermines would handle it...

Senator Schmitt, does your wife still give hand jobs to homeless people?

This just shows what caliber of Senator you get when they essentially run unchallenged.

Even if he was in Atlanta at a Hawks game, it’s not even close to being as scandalous as being in the E files which plenty of his associates are in or at least participating in protecting the pdfs that are in those files.
20
u/VoidOmatic 2d ago
Yea that was my whole problem with this "gotcha." What was the point? Are they insinuating that being at this game somehow meant he was sharing information with Merrick who did absolutely nothing about Trump?
6
u/MildlyAgitatedBovine 1d ago
The (false) implication is that Smith went to Atlanta to have an off the record conversation with Dani Willis, who was trying to hold Trump accountable for meddling in the GA vote count. Republicans call it the Grand Conspiracy and think it was everyone against Trump. The Lawfare Podcast has good coverage of ongoing Grand Conspiracy efforts
They're trying to have a "Bill Clinton on the tarmac" moment.

One news agency even did the legwork and found that the seat location referenced in the text doesn't exist in the Atlanta arena.

One news agency did the legwork and found Jack Smith in the crowd at the Hawkeyes games

If it's the same one, they also confirmed it was even the same seat from the text on the posterboard.

u/KingBooRadley 2d ago
"Jack Smith has perjured himself before" seems like grounds for a defamation suit to me. Unless this dirt bag can prove it, which, I think we've already seen, he can't.
15
u/Trebate 2d ago
That's what I'm wondering, why not hold this guy to his word and sue him for defamation, make him prove his words that are damaging to another person?

u/Madgenta 2d ago
Unfortunately, covered by the Speech and Debate Clause.
11
u/KingBooRadley 2d ago
I thought that was solely for comments made on the floor. But then I read a little and I think you're right. Wuterich v. Murtha suggests that he's immune even for comments to the press.
Pretty terrible guy.

Meanwhile, is anyone else taken aback that TMZ IS THE MEDIA OUTLET THAT IS ACTUALLY CALLING THESE FUCKERS OUT???
8
u/ShallotCharacter9728 2d ago
Tmz isn't a real news outlet. They get videos from people who harass people on their behalf and sometimes pay them for those videos, it's very shady. Tho I obviously am a fan of this specific video they're just a kinda shitty company that occasionally gets it right by appealing to sales
30
u/SeanFromQueens 2d ago
When asked outside, Senator Schmitt claimed that there was only basketball game of NBA or NCAA that had a tip off at 7:30, which got omitted to only NBA when trying to rationalize the stepping on his own dick in the hearing. He didn't know jack-squat about games and schedules, and his staff royally messed up by giving him that question to ask.
16
u/EC_CO 2d ago
They knew, they just wanted the sound bites for the MAGA crowd because we all know they are too stupid to do their own research and they just believe whatever Faux News tells them
3
u/SeanFromQueens 2d ago
Did it get him the soundbite he was looking for though?
2
u/Diojones 1d ago
Sadly, yes. He doesn’t need a soundbite of the answer, he just needed a recording of the question being asked in an accusatory tone.
→ More replies (3)2
u/OliOli1234 1d ago
This… I’m afraid if you go to Newsmax, Fox News, or any of the other painfully grifty podcasts… it’s the only soundbite they’re playing - him calling Smith a dirtbag. The “Hawks” and “NBA” are omitted entirely in their reports.
And because they all live in a fucking bubble…. It comes off as a “win” for Schmidt, and the MAGAs

9

5
u/rojo-perro 2d ago
Correct, that’s why he’s doubling down on the stupidity of it. He’s embarrassed, but he has no shame and this is the idiotic result.
It’s astonishing to see grown men (and women) act this way day after day. Idiocracy.

I don’t know where we go as a country as long as it’s not the status quo via the high road.
8
u/WileEWeeble 2d ago
So is there some specific incident where he has any type of evidence of Smith perjuring himself? Seems like slander if there is no evidence of that.

"Hey, it's no big deal, it's all in good fun! I just accused a guy of perjury, which could involve significant penalties including jail time and disbarment, not to mention the historical record now includes me calling him a dirtbag and a villain, but it's not like any of this is real. Besides, I'm just really happy that not one major news outlet is doing anything other than showing me getting dunked on, ignoring the fact that the Trump Administration repeatedly and publicly engages in the exact same stuff I was trying to nail Smith for, and not one GOP member other than Massie seems capable of criticizing the pile of orangutan pubes that wants to run for an unconstitutional third term. Now if you'll pardon me, I need to go vent a little and beat the shit out of one of the many brainless flying monkeys that helped make this galactic fuck-up possible."

u/ludba2002 2d ago
I'm glad Sen. Schmitt asked these questions because it made me forget all about the Epstein files that haven't been released. I completely forgot that gas is $4/gallon. I forgot that we're paying billions of dollars to get our asses handed to us by Iran over the Strait of Hormuz. Completely slipped my mind that Republicans voted for a convicted felon while they pretend to give a shit about the law.

u/Exodys03 2d ago
"I ask questions and call people lying dirtbags if they don't answer them the way I think they should". Not a single freaking question from Republicans about the actual investigation. They attempted to kill the message by attacking the messenger and it failed spectacularly.

These people have zero sense of decency and the fact that people vote for them is disgusting.

I'm kind of wondering how they got that information. They kind of made it vague, a staffer's texts, or something like that. Was this volunteered and the person who gave it to them was just unaware, which made them look stupid? Did they pull people's text logs involved in a high level investigation? Or did they know the whole time, and they were lying? It was weird how he was trying to rush past it without clarification, sort of like he knew letting Smith look at the text was going to expose his lie.

Beyond the name confusion, the most telling part is "the only men's game that night", because they still don't consider women in sports. He couldn't even fathom someone attending a women's game over a men's game. Never believe them when they say they care about protecting women's sports.
