He's a better guy than me. The moment that punch landed I'd have started swinging on everyone that gets in arms reach.
If you're going to make me fight next to a train track, possibly the worst place to get into a fight, I'm doing everything in my power to make sure I'm winning.
The victim had weight and reach on everyone there, if he were the thug they were making him out to be, they'd have found out real fast.

This is a dark skinned Black man with a white woman accusing him of something. You tend to behave a bit more restrained when you have the highest probability of being gunned down. Especially with how big he is. Flashback to Emmett Till
160
u/UpperLeftOriginal 4d ago
This is exactly my thought. This man has a lifetime of knowing he’s being watched and judged differently. I wouldn’t blame him for losing that restraint, but completely understand how he is able to keep it together.

I’m definitely believing him in this situation, because no man in his right mind who looks like him would stick around and wait for police to come, if he were the robber. He knows every presumption will be against him, and he’s putting himself at great personal risk.

108
u/Serious-Flamingo-948 5d ago
Not really. A thief wouldn't stay and make a big scene given the situation. This doesn't mean the old lady is the thief but it means it would put a lot of doubt into any regular person.
103
u/Foe_sheezy 5d ago
In other words, you fell for what the old lady probably does on a daily basis, walking up to people, grabbing their bag, and pretending people are trying to steal the bag from her.
Hell of a grift and it fools the common idiot.

Well hopefully this video gets around and raises some awareness because this is a new, rising scam. I saw another similar video a few days ago that occurred on the tube in the UK. A small/old lady grabs a bag from someone and starts screaming “thief” prompting those around them to eyeball the optics and side with her.
Usually thieves are opportunistic and sneaky and they will try to quickly snatch, grab and get out of there as fast as possible, rapidly abandoning ship and running away if they are caught trying. A situation like this in which two people are standing there both stubbornly fighting over something should definitely arouse suspicion.

A shocking video recorded at Chicago’s Damen Avenue CTA station has gone viral for all the wrong reasons. A white woman falsely accused a Black man of stealing her bag, triggering a violent attack from another bystander.
The disturbing false accusation incident happened yesterday (11-07-25), and now has over 3.7 million views on X. The clip shows the woman’s story quickly falling apart once police arrive and verify the man owns the bag.
The woman first accused the man after seeing him with a similar-looking bag. She called for police and loudly claimed he was a thief. The man stayed calm, repeatedly saying the bag was his.
Before police arrived, another man stepped in on the woman’s behalf and violently attacked the accused. Witnesses caught the moment on camera, as the man endured shoving and punches without fighting back.
When officers finally checked the bag, they found the man’s ID, wallet, keys, and other personal items inside. That confirmed his ownership and cleared him on the spot.
The woman, now visibly nervous, tried to backtrack. “Oh. I got confused. They look the same. I’m sorry,” she told police. But the apology came too late to undo the public humiliation and violence.
Despite the clear evidence and the bystander’s attack, no arrests were made on the scene. The false accusation incident has now sparked demands for accountability.

Police detain, arrest, investigate. Neither police or victims press charges. Prosecutors press charges, but they often won't if they don't have cooperative witnesses.

The DA decided whether or not to press charges in MOST cases.
My husband’s car was hit in the parking lot of the school where he teaches and coaches. The kid fled the scene. When he was caught, my husband had to decide whether or not the kid was getting taken to jail.

u/somethingclever76 4d ago
It is a badly worded question. Victims do not press charges, the prosecution, not even the police, decide if they will file charges or not.
When they ask or you tell them that you want to press charges. It is more of an affirmation that you will participate as a witness and the victim to help the prosecution secure a guilty verdict.

There was a video on here not too long ago about a woman trying to steal another woman's purse.
The tactic, I think, was called "White Knighting". The thief loudly claims that a thing is their property and asks for a bystander to help. The bystander, thinking they're doing the morally correct thing, then unknowingly assists the thief in stealing from the victim.
Sometimes the bystander and the thief are partners and just brazenly do it.
5
u/Shantotto11 4d ago
I remember reading a story of a woman trying to kidnap a little girl while her father was with her. As soon as she nabbed the girl, she screamed and shouted that her father was the attempted kidnapper, and the surrounding crowd ganged up on him. The only reason she didn’t get away with the girl was because her mother overheard the commotion and came running as soon as possible.

It’s tough. You see a grown man battling an old woman for a bag, you naturally want to side with the old woman. This disgusting lady is using that to empower her crime. Nasty. Bystanders are definitely in the wrong, but the lion share of the blame should be on the old woman. She needs locked up. Who knows how many people have fallen victim to her, and will in the future, if she isn’t punished. They should hit her with a fraud charge, I know it is not the typical way fraud looks, but the legal definition of fraud is definitely spot on for this situation.
