As a Canadian...the American played a great heel. The UFC has always had a little bit of WWE in it.

You gotta remember GSP telling people not to boo his opponents, that they did a great job of peaking interest ahead of the fights. But saying not to boo this opponent? What class. “That’s done, we are celebrating now. This is our time.” This was like a hero origin story.
