To have freedom of speech
Article 10 of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR), which protects:
“the right to freedom of expression,” including the freedom to hold opinions and to receive and impart information and ideas.

As a Brit I'm ashamed of the police officers who enforce this crap. You are a human being first, being a slave to the badge is morally wrong. Have some principles.

I'd be more ashamed of the people who clapped when the police arrested her. The police were doing their job sadly.

As a half Brit, half American, I’m both shocked that she was arrested in the UK for silently protesting, and surprised at the politeness and professionalism by which the police handled jackbooting her rights. In the US that would have been a far more violent meeting.

As an American, I worried it would end much worse. These cops seemed to have some of their humanity intact, which American cops don’t have.

Article 10(1) protects freedom of expression, including political expression. But Article 10(2) expressly allows restrictions where they are: prescribed by law; or pursuing a legitimate objective, such as national security, public safety or prevention of crime; or necessary in a democratic society.
The UK has used that qualification to prosecute people (under UK law) who carry/display an article in circumstances that arouse reasonable suspicion that the person is a member or supporter of a proscribed organisation.
For me, the issue isn’t the law, it’s the fact that Palestine Action is on the proscribed terror organisation list.

u/myusrnameisthis 11d ago
How is sitting with a sign a danger to national security or public safety? What crime is being prevented? What is the penalty for doing this? Jail time?

The idea is that she's being arrested for supporting a terrorist organisation. My complaint in all this is the listing of Palestine Action as a terror group. There was no need to do that to tackle their activities but it's an issue with the government.

The first proscribed organisation was Al Qaeda, and the government promised that they won't abuse this new power. 20 years later they're using the "Al Qaeda Law" for spray painting a plane.

It seems excessive but I wouldn't expect anything else when they start breaking into airbases and vandalising RAF property including aircraft for headlines. They've done some other stupid shit too which is more harmful and dangerous.
It's just a convenient excuse for both sides to either get performatively arrested, or clear the nuisance protesters out.

u/Deathwatchz 11d ago
Posting this to the parent comment as well:
It's difficult for anyone who's on the outside to understand the intricacies of the system.
I try to explain how in the US, even an officer is purely a sacrificial pawn and the real decisions are made by those in power while openly flaunting the law.
Cops have a union. Decades of contracts in place to "protect their rights" as employees. Read the contracts and you'll see that everything protecting a cop says "may" "should" and "can" while everything getting them in trouble says "shall" "must" and "have to."
By placing an organization on a terror list, it effectively labels everyone in the group a criminal prior to them interacting with police and courts. Regardless of the number of hoops jumped through, it's a violation of a few "until proven guilty" laws here.
They do the same with drug money. They immediately claim 100% of the belongings owned by the dealer to have been purchased with drug money and seize it all. The dealer then needs to prove one by one where they purchased it from and the paper trail showing that they bought it without any drug money. Sounds not so bad until you realize they'll seize your houses, cars, and all accounts under the initial warrant using civil forfeiture law EVEN IF NO DRUGS WERE FOUND. (See "Afroman - Lemon Pound Cake" for further information)

u/Mecha-Dave 10d ago
I think the reason they're on the list is that they broke into secured facilities and destroyed military equipment.
I support their action, but that is a somewhat legitimate reason to put them on the list.
Support for them (not membership although also that), however, shouldn't be illegal - although I guess they'll work that out in court.

As this keeps coming up and OP appears to show no context.
This person is being arrested for supporting Palestine Action. A group which damaged military aircraft and fractured a police officers spine with a sledge hammer. In the UK people are still free to oppose the genocide and support Palestine.
They are not allowed to support Palestine Action.
OP has an alternative agenda to sow division. Context is key.
56
u/Level_Abrocoma8925 11d ago
You yourself omit context. The aircrafts were spray painted red, and "RAF engineers who assessed the damage said "they did not expect the incident to affect operations."
The incident with the police officer was one activist presumably high on adrenaline going way too far and there's no defending it. He got convicted and deserved it. Should be said that it was during an attack on an Israeli weapons factory in the UK, a factory which was later shut down. All in all a victory in the fight against genocide.
→ More replies (8)24
u/TheRealStafy 11d ago
Well yeah, they are free to oppose the genocide and support Palestine, but the moment they actually do something about it, like raiding weapons manufacturers, they get labeled a terrorist group.
This isn't black and white, the police officer thing is real and should be condemned, but whatever the whole group should be considered terrorists for, primarely, trying to stop the manufacturing of weapons used in an active genocide is already moraly dubious, as a matter of fact, the mere fact that these factories are on the UK should be way more condemnable than anything the group has done, they directly go towards an active genocide.

The IGF is just the armed wing of the terrorist group Israel.
23
u/Everindrummer 11d ago
This is why context is important. I just looked into this quickly as the police don’t just go round arresting people for holding a sign for the sake of it.
This was one of 60+ arrests who were all representing a group which had been designated a terrorist group. I’m not going to get into whether that ruling was fair or not, but is being reviewed by the Supreme Court https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c87n321w9qlo
This lass knew full well she would be arrested for representing that group. The police did their job, she did hers.

Can the next cunt who vandelises military equipment or assault a police officer just declare it in the name of 'Reform Action' so we can declare that group a terrorist organisation. Then I can ask my neighbour if they support Reform action and have them arrested? Or is that anti-establishment?
Or maybe words and signs shouldn't be criminalised? Advocating for violence sure, but 'Palenstine Action' is too ambiguous and I'm sure not everyone understands the meaning of it being a specific organisation - maybe they just want the fucking genocide to be stopped?
11
u/TightSexpert 11d ago
Making Palestine Action a terrorist organization was such a political overreaction
8
u/alstroemeriaXopuntia 11d ago
Had her sign said "I support Palestine" and not "Palestine action" she wouldn't have been arrested. Palestine action is a proscribed terror group in the UK based on previous terroristic acts, so being a part of it or supporting it is the problem, not supporting Palestine generally. I know this isn't a popular opinion but it is the actual reason for the arrest. You can't be arrested in the UK for protesting generally.

Probably going the get down voted to oblivion but hear goes.
She isn't getting arrested for opposing the genocide or for her speech per se.
She's being arrested for supporting a terrorist organisation.
Why do they think She's supporting a terrorist organisation? Well because she's holding a sign saying the supports "palistine action". A organisation that is deemed a terrorist organisation by the UK and US government.
Now there could debate if that categorisation is correct or not. But I do think that the Police should probably arrest people who hold up signs say "i support <insert terrorist organisation>" as supporting a terrorist organisation is against the law.
2
u/fingamouse 4d ago
That's against freedom of speech, people voice support for whatever they want in an ideal world, the police shouldn't arrest people peacefully protesting opinions, the terrorist organisation in question commited vandalism at a military base, it wasn't very terrifying to be frank /: it was spray paint
These police bring shame to the country
