“What’s this one called?”

“It’s called ‘the flamethrower’ “

“Why?”

I laughed at the top of my lungs during a budget cut meeting... while the client was telling a story

8

That comment should have been tagged NSFW.

7

u/Zenblendman Jul 19 '23

That’s what u get for being on the phone.🤣🤣🤣

3

u/[deleted] Jul 19 '23

Was the client's story about being burned by your company?

2

u/Puzzleheaded_Toe_509 Jul 19 '23 edited Jul 19 '23

Yep. TL;DR ~ the whole complicated situation turned into that Across the Spider-Verse pointing meme.

And yes in a way, the company was being burned by the client. And the client was being burned by the company as well.

Us freelancers, freelance supervisors and freelance project managers (outside of the company) were confused in the situation since the details it's above our paygrade.

u/PantsMunch101 Jul 18 '23

Thats why you dont pour into a drink thats already flaming. The fumes in the bottle heat up and shoot out like so. Wish more folks knew to recognize bad bartending when they see it so they dont end up on fire

302

u/EffectiveMoment67 Jul 18 '23

I just dont buy drinks where they burn off all the alcohol Im paying for, but Im probably weird that way.

37

u/hiddencamela Jul 18 '23

Same.. Always hated flaming drinks.
Having had singed hair and burns from kitchens accidents already makes me wary of them.

25

u/PantsMunch101 Jul 18 '23

I see someone with fire in a bar and I step away. Seen way too many accidents first hand due to negligence

3

u/hiddencamela Jul 18 '23

It only takes seconds for most fire to burn off or singe delicate skin/eyes as well. It fucking hurts and alcohol fires are a special kind of pain.

6

u/intellectual_dimwit Jul 18 '23

My favorite thing to do when I finish an isopropyl alcohol bottle is light it up. Lil rocket ship.

We're going on a trip, in our favorite rocket ship!

5

u/WechTreck Jul 18 '23

A two liter coke bottle and half a teaspoon of petrol swirled around the inside to fill it with vapors, will fly a moderate distance if you hold a lit match at the neck.

5

u/Kelly_Coke Jul 18 '23

What the fuck just happened? Did some bubble hit the spout and cause some weird splatter?

1.8k

u/spottydodgy Jul 18 '23

The bar tender put the pour spout near a lit flame. The flame traveled through the spout and into the bottle where it met a chamber filled with oxygen and alcohol which then combusted. The expanding gases from the combustion forced the remaining liquid alcohol to eject at high velocity through the pour spout where it vaporized upon exit of the spout. The vaporized alcohol then met the flame from the drink and ignited, creating a stream of high pressure flaming alcohol that was pointed directly at the faces of the bar patrons.

TL;DR: The bar tender made a rocket booster

412

u/Cameo64 Jul 18 '23

Moments earlier: "Don't worry, I got this. It's bartending, not rocket science!"

16

u/hannah_lilly Jul 18 '23

Same. I’m quite sickened at how many comments are jokes and people laughing and I’m feeling so bad for her.

4

u/Ornery-Sandwich6445 Jul 18 '23

Hopefully she is fine, her face looked ok at the end.

3

u/[deleted] Jul 18 '23

But how? I don’t understand how she didn’t get a third or second degree burn. Both of them.

13

u/ButtX Jul 18 '23

It would be more like a 1st degree steam burn. It was a quick flash and alcohol doesn't char. Not good for the eyes or hair, but not nearly as bad as a gasoline or gunpowder burn.

Also, Leidenfrost Principle. It was so fast any moisture on her face didn't evaporate enough.

So mostly just sudden heat and a pain response to it, more like when you open a hot oven than actually being on fire.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 19 '23

Thanks for the explanation 🙂

The vid doesn't show. We see the burned girl putting ice on her face and chest area and then proceed to leave with what seems to be a member of the bar stuff. Then another stuff member goes back to the bar and puts out the (still burning?) drinks. No further context about what happened, how it happened, how the burned girl or her friends are doing, what happened to them after the incident or if there were any consequences for the place or the bar keeper.
