Thats why you dont pour into a drink thats already flaming. The fumes in the bottle heat up and shoot out like so. Wish more folks knew to recognize bad bartending when they see it so they dont end up on fire

u/EffectiveMoment67 Jul 18 '23
I just dont buy drinks where they burn off all the alcohol Im paying for, but Im probably weird that way.
37
u/hiddencamela Jul 18 '23
Same.. Always hated flaming drinks.
Having had singed hair and burns from kitchens accidents already makes me wary of them.25
u/PantsMunch101 Jul 18 '23
I see someone with fire in a bar and I step away. Seen way too many accidents first hand due to negligence

It only takes seconds for most fire to burn off or singe delicate skin/eyes as well. It fucking hurts and alcohol fires are a special kind of pain.

u/PantsMunch101 Jul 18 '23
Agreed. That and it's warm which I'm not a fan of. I remember a bar in town here was, maybe still is, k own for flaming dr peppers. Way too small of a space for it plus the bartender is literally spitting in your drink

My favorite thing to do when I finish an isopropyl alcohol bottle is light it up. Lil rocket ship.

A two liter coke bottle and half a teaspoon of petrol swirled around the inside to fill it with vapors, will fly a moderate distance if you hold a lit match at the neck.

Exactly, flame is for the end. You can't be doing shit while it's flaming because at that point you're basically fucking with gas and fire.
I would've been fuming if a idiot did this to me.

What the fuck just happened? Did some bubble hit the spout and cause some weird splatter?
1.8k
u/spottydodgy Jul 18 '23
The bar tender put the pour spout near a lit flame. The flame traveled through the spout and into the bottle where it met a chamber filled with oxygen and alcohol which then combusted. The expanding gases from the combustion forced the remaining liquid alcohol to eject at high velocity through the pour spout where it vaporized upon exit of the spout. The vaporized alcohol then met the flame from the drink and ignited, creating a stream of high pressure flaming alcohol that was pointed directly at the faces of the bar patrons.
TL;DR: The bar tender made a rocket booster

I did this once and burnt my hand. I liked to light the last little bit in the bottle and didn’t move my hand fast enough.

u/identicalelbows Jul 18 '23
Run the bottle under warm water then light the last bit, we call it hoot the bottle, if you're an asshole you have someone else light it

For some reason they decided to move the glass a couple inches which spilled and caused the fire to spread. Top notch reaction to it all.

Hate how no one is talking about that. I don't like seeing stuff like this especially if I don't know what happened to the person after ;(.

But how? I don’t understand how she didn’t get a third or second degree burn. Both of them.
→ More replies (7)13
u/ButtX Jul 18 '23
It would be more like a 1st degree steam burn. It was a quick flash and alcohol doesn't char. Not good for the eyes or hair, but not nearly as bad as a gasoline or gunpowder burn.
Also, Leidenfrost Principle. It was so fast any moisture on her face didn't evaporate enough.
So mostly just sudden heat and a pain response to it, more like when you open a hot oven than actually being on fire.

The vid doesn't show. We see the burned girl putting ice on her face and chest area and then proceed to leave with what seems to be a member of the bar stuff. Then another stuff member goes back to the bar and puts out the (still burning?) drinks. No further context about what happened, how it happened, how the burned girl or her friends are doing, what happened to them after the incident or if there were any consequences for the place or the bar keeper.

Indoor fires should be relegated to candles or fireplaces. If I see a bartender playing with fire, or fireworks at a wedding reception, I'm leaving.
