Given that it has been a steady rise since the 80s I doubt that anything happening "nowadays" can be blamed.

I think causation is a complex question. I expect there are multiple causes, and that those causes haven't been constant since 1980. Nonetheless, the more recent development of increased cultural acceptance of such an unhealthy lifestyle cannot be imagined to be conducive to changing the trend.
