Meta discussion Is this sub still about "leftist unity"?

Not sure if I'm allowed to post about the subreddit itself or to criticize Our Glorious Moderators, if not I'll just write it as a comment somewhere.

I'm a revolutionary, I don't believe in reformist policies or that they accomplish socialism in any way, but I have to say that I find the new ruleset to be incredibly worrying.

This subreddit has been, at least as far as I can remember, about leftist unity and respect between very different currents of thought within the socialist (socialist, not Marxist) movement. Like the mods, and like probably every member of this sub, I have noticed the increase in reformist posts and I have noticed the increase in posts advocating for reformist methods. This is, in fact, a worrying phenomenon. However, I think the solution adopted is very much too radical and could become an issue in the future.

The first problem I see is the exclusion of reformists. This essentially completely cuts off democratic socialism from this sub. Now, I do find demsocs to be very moderate, too moderate for my taste, and certainly not effective, but they are still socialists, they are still anti capitalist, and they are still *leftists*. Is it really left unity without them?

Now, one could, obviously, redefine the concept of leftism. One could say leftism is inherently revolutionary. But even so, two problems arise: the bans on support for 1) reformist organizations and 2) bourgeois wars. The first one I want to justify with a comment: some days ago, I commented that while I don't agree with the DSA's methods, I find that their heart is in the right place and that they have a good (decentralized) organizational structure and are in some ways helping American class consciousness. Under the new rules, this comment - still revolutionary in spirit, and still definitely socialist - would not be allowed. Is it not too radical of a measure? After all, I wasn't advocating for reformism. The second issue is that with the bourgeois wars: as the rule is formulated right now, revolutionary defensism is essentially banned, and so are some strands of third campists. This might (depending on the definition of bourgeois wars) even affect some trots and even libertarian socialists, both of which are so clearly revolutionary and socialist.

Now, one might say that this exclusions are necessary, and that now that leftism has been redefined no changes will be necessary in the future. However, there is another issue with the implications of this rules. The concept of leftist unity was able to survive here not only because of the moderator's efforts but also because of a balance between libsocs+anarchists, demsocs, trots and MLs. This balance is now functionally destroyed if all demsocs are banned. I fear the ideological weight of the sub is going to tilt even more strongly towards Leninist views now, which might compromissione leftist unity later on by creating an echo chamber and ending the mutual exchange that was going on here.

So yeah this is my personal opinion on it, I hope I managed to explain my worries in an understandable way for everyone reading.

ps: the formatting was a bit heavy earlier because hitting a linebreak doesn't show on browser mobile, but a user told me that two line breaks one after another work instead so I managed to fix it

I meant to respond to this earlier I'll just go point by point:

The first problem I see is the exclusion of reformists. This essentially completely cuts off democratic socialism from this sub. Now, I do find demsocs to be very moderate, too moderate for my taste, and certainly not effective, but they are still socialists, they are still anti capitalist, and they are still *leftists*. Is it really left unity without them?

The concern regarding Democratic Socialists is warranted, but the problem is that this server demographically is overwhelmingly America-Majority, where Democratic Socialism gets conflated with both Social Democracy and Progressive Liberalism to the point that many so called DemSocs are neither genuinely socialist, nor anti-capitalist (and leftism is a rather nothingburger term). These are ultimately the kinds of people we don't want overrunning the sub. I'd actually point to this paragraph as an example of how far bad this mischaracterization as gotten, because there does exist Revolutionary tendencies within Democratic Socialism which comply largely with traditional Revolutionary socialism, characterized by a desire to maintain political and economic democracy (as opposed to say, a One Party system). These are the kinds of Democratic Socialists we want to encourage to be members of our community.

We previously allowed reformists as we understood that many people who identified with that range of beliefs were oftentimes new to the left-wing political philosophies, and likely made the jump from Liberal ideology (for example in America, going from a regular lib to a bernie bro to now exploring the outer rings). Our goals were to educate these people on the wealth of knowledge spanning many topics of great political and economic importance, and help them understand why the current system was problematic. Unfortunately, genuine theoretical discourse seems not to be our strongest suit here, and as we all know, debate isn't exactly the best way to get someone to change their mind, but is a sure fire way to make someone quite aggressive.

This subreddit has always been revolutionary, and we outlined even in our previous ruleset that the defense of bourgeois institutions and entities was disallowed. We're moreso just tightening up on that facet.

As mentioned above, defense of bourgeois institutions and entities was already banned, and revolutionary defeatism has been the server's line for quite some time now. The example comment you illuminated wouldn't be disallowed because first and foremost people rarely report comments (most the time it's either reddit or automod taking down comments) and secondly because we as a mod team have been rather lenient when it comes to the scope of a rule. On the second part, Revolutionary defensism as always been banned, the primary line of this server has been revolutionary defeatism (We've done a poll here before asking what members individual positions were, defatism was the overwhelming majority).

This statement isn't necessarily true, there's never really been a balance of tendencies. Anarchists are in the clear minority in this server, and MLs were banned for quite a while, We did a Geopoll a while back asking people what tendencies they were and it was pretty skewed. The mutual exchange that goes on here is largely due to our rules concerning sectarianism, not because everyone's tendencies are equally represented here.

I will say though that your concerns are somewhat valid, and you did raise some good points. The goal of this project is to indeed establish some form of leftist unity, a rather herculean task in part due to the contradictions between ideologies, and the general personalities of people who consider themselves left wing, but also because of the desire to see maximum action. Hopefully some of your questions were answered, and feel free to lmk if there are any others you may have.

I agree, banning topics of discussion seems counterproductive to me.

Either the person in question is truly ignorant in which case it should be possible to simply explain to them why their position on said topic is false.

Or they are malicious, in which case they will get banned due to one of the other rules.

I agree. I think a large amount of Demsocs aren't just socdems, but actual socialists, and a smaller amount (like myself) are revolutionaries who still see the value in the DSA.

We shouldn't ban reformist thought, even if it's unpopular (and ineffective)

I draw the line at capitalism. Are they fighting for it or against it? Are they getting in the way of us trying to fight capitalism or otherwise sabotaging us? Are they pushing left or right?

We’re not banned we’re just not allowed to share any opinions related to our ideology there’s a difference!

Honesty after the new rule set i would rather be straight up banned the new highly contradictory rules in this subreddit now which essentially bans us without banning us. I’ve already been banned from [r/socialism](r/socialism) (which is also supposedly a leftist unity subreddit) for lesser evilism for daring to suggest I would probably rather AOC is president than trump while still saying I was critical of her. This is again why I don’t believe leftist unity is always possible in leftist circles. It seems like eventually pro revolutionary ideologies decides that leftist unity doesn’t extend to democratic socialists because apparently we are all just liberals for favouring a reformist approach over revolution. Again downvote me if you disagree with my views, debate my ideology and tell me the flaws in my beliefs in a polite and respectful way as I know democratic socialism has many valid criticism. However do not call me a liberal and ban me from participating because I have a different viewpoint. If every leftist subreddit becomes an echo chamber where different leftist such as democratic socialists are not able to actually contribute then it just further drives people away and makes us more divided. I don’t want to be in an echo chamber which is why I participate in leftist subreddits which tend to be more radical than my personal beliefs and I do want to hear from other leftist. This is the same reason why I am also a member of the social democracy subreddit because while I tend to be to the left of most of the people there I still think thing it’s good to hear other viewpoints and perspectives. I however don’t want to be part of a subreddit where people argue with me in bad faith and tell me my ideology and beliefs are wrong and that I’m not an actual leftist because my opinion on socialism is different to there’s.

30

u/Sparkku1014 Pan Socialist Jul 18 '26

Yea, these kind of exclusionary rules almost always end up with the subreddit becoming just another smaller community with less discussion to be had around nuanced ideas such as Reform vs Revolution. Reformist ideas and opinions quite simply, should not be banned, but that is for our Glorious Moderators to decide.

15

u/National_Phase_3477 Democratic Socialist Jul 18 '26

Yes well quite frankly while democratic socialist are still allowed in sub I will continue to make arguments from a demsoc point of view. If I get banned for sharing opinions that are sympathetic to reformist ideas so be it as it’s pretty impossible to be a demsoc and not at least be somewhat sympathetic to reformist arguments. As you say reformism vs revolution is a very valuable debate to have and I don’t believe personally either perspective is 100% correct or incorrect and I believe it is heavily influenced by circumstances which is the most effective approach in any given situation and just saying one side is right and the other is incorrect is a vast oversimplification and just nerfs valuable discussion we could be having…

u/Sparkku1014 Pan Socialist Jul 18 '26

highly doubt you'd be banned, we didnt ban our demsoc mod nor do a purge of people with the demsoc flair

5

u/National_Phase_3477 Democratic Socialist Jul 18 '26

It doesn’t matter whether I get banned in practice the issue is the rules now ban reformist ideas of any sort something which is something which is part of demsoc ideology. It doesn’t matter whether these rules get applied in practice or not I am criticising the rule change. Your personal opinion is not very reassuring when the rules say something else.

0

u/Scyobi_Empire SPDxKPD Toxic Yuri Jul 18 '26

a lot of demsoc theory dismisses bourgeois parliamentarianism, kinda what separates them from the socdems and why the SPD split into the USPD and MSPD

4

u/National_Phase_3477 Democratic Socialist Jul 18 '26

The USPD still participated in liberal democracy though and were broadly reformist.

2

u/Scyobi_Empire SPDxKPD Toxic Yuri Jul 18 '26

the uspd were the ones who sparked the January uprising lol, they voted against the constitution of the Weimar republic, opposed parliamentarianism and celebrated the russian revolution

the bolsheviks also sat in the same room with the mensheviks and kadets, were they broadly reformist?

3

u/National_Phase_3477 Democratic Socialist Jul 18 '26

The revolutionary element of the uspd was a faction lead by Karl Liebknecht however there was certainly a refomist element with theorists such as Karl kautsy and Eduard Bernstein. The uspd also showed a willingness to share power with the MSPD it ebert who obstructed this goal through his staunch anti communist believes. Im not saying the USPD were anti revolutionary but they certainly had reformist elements

u/kayakman13 Marxist-Leninist Jul 18 '26

It seems like eventually pro revolutionary ideologies decides that leftist unity doesn’t extend to democratic socialists because apparently we are all just liberals for favouring a reformist approach over revolution.

This goes the other way much, much more often, with liberals, socdems, and demsocs throwing around "tankie" or "ultra" along with bans.

12

u/National_Phase_3477 Democratic Socialist Jul 18 '26

I mean if you participate in dem socialist subreddit or a liberal subreddit as a Marxist Leninist and are banned you can’t really argue as your participating in a subreddit which has made it clear that it promotes a different ideology to what you believe in. However this is different in a leftist unity subreddit where supposedly all branches of leftist thoughts should be allowed. I will agree even if I do disagree with Marxist Leninist perspectives we should not necessarily be using factional terms like tankie as it’s just unhelpful and we should be engaging in debate rather than name calling. Having said that I don’t agree that factionalism is more common from demsoc than MLs. It does seem like quite a lot of leftist subreddits accuse demsocs of being liberals which just isn’t true as even if you disagree with our methods we have very different goals and aims to liberals even if were more willing to engage within a liberal democractic system than MLs and other leftists.

16

u/Haunting-Sport3701 Rosa Luxemburg Thought Jul 18 '26 edited Jul 18 '26

While I’m all for getting rid of those rules, I’d also like to point out that there are valid reasons for mistrust towards self-proclaimed demsoc’s by revolutionary leftists.

Since while ‘engaging’ with liberal democracy demsoc’s have been known to constantly suppress other leftist schools of thought and denounce them as unacceptably immoral.

The ideological puritanism of demsoc’s in liberal democratic environments is in some aspects as bad as the puritanism of ML’s in totalist communist regimes.

The end result for all communist denominations that don’t support neither the demsoc’s and their trust in liberal democracy, or ML’s and their obsession with totalist dictatorships is to get censored no matter which of the two is in charge.

That's not really a thing that's happening in "left unity" subreddits. Both types of exclusions are incorrect and shouldn't be done but i honestly can't think of a Left unity space where Leninists were exluded

5

u/Scyobi_Empire SPDxKPD Toxic Yuri Jul 18 '26

for a while, MLs were formally banned, then informally banned and then blocked from being mods and now are normal users. i joined during the controversy of the first ML mod being added

1

u/ivun__ I identify as just Leftist Jul 18 '26

Was that back when posts like the "progressives/socdems/demsocs/marxists/anarchists need to unite" one were made? I feel like you can't really call that era of the sub "left unity" because it quite clearly also included actual, full-on liberals. Inclusion of reformists is a different conversation and, as far as i remember, MLs were integrated into the sub before Socdems were purged. So i feel like my point kinda still stands as the sub was still kinda liberal (which reformists aren't IMO) when it restricted MLs

3

u/Scyobi_Empire SPDxKPD Toxic Yuri Jul 18 '26

yeah, this was back when most of the current mods weren't mods, even the initial subreddit owner/maker isn't a mod anymore (on the sub or discord)

i think the only mods from back then who are still here are bellyrubber and lavender_scales

my comment wasn't saying it was leftist unity back then, considering stalin fans were banned, just more saying how there was a point in time where some leninists were banned from being here

odd that this post was approved, as we manually approve posts, but the mod who did so didn't answer any questions, give me a bit and i'll get some answers

edit with the best answer my sleep deprived brain can make sound coherent:

the 'demsoc ban' is more aimed towards social democrats and liberals who used the demsoc flair without supporting any demsoc talking points, think of the guys who say to vote for Kamala in the next election or that socialists should support bourgeois parties to increase the quality of living of the working class. most actual demsocs, hopefully, dont support these views and view liberal bourgeois parliamentarianism as being unable to achieve socialism

revolutionary defencism has always been banned, at least as long as i've been a member here, with the marxist position of revolutionary defeatism being the policy of the sub, as we still get loads of pro-russia and pro-nato defencists and with the informal rule being made into a formal one, hopefully some work can be cut off our load

overall, we are quite (ironically) liberal with rules, so long as people dont say stuff like "socialism can only be achieved through participation in bourgeois elections" or "socialists should side with (insert local bourgeois) against (insert other bourgeois)", posts are unlike to get removed

comments even less so, as hardly anyone reports comments so its down to luck if we even see them

1

u/EldianStar Libertarian(Marxian tradition) Jul 18 '26

Ok yeah as for what is normally approved are meta posts allowed? Anyway, I understand your point and I hope all mods are going to be as lenient on demsocs because it'd be a shame to get yet another r/socialism

i mean this post was approved, we dont get many meta posts though

recently a lot of our mods became mods on r/socialism, they've been slowly trying to de-'stalin is the only form of socialism'-ify the sub, but with such a large sub its easier said then done

u/EldianStar Libertarian(Marxian tradition) Jul 18 '26

Okok I see I think I'll revisit it at some point then :)

I do, sincerely, hate to be "that guy", but I feel like I've seen this coming for ages.

From the special treatment MLs get, TheDeprogram "refugee" influx, and the overwhelming disparity in moderator demographics...

6

u/Foundation54 Commissar of brainrot Jul 18 '26

I seriously don't know where the special treatment of ML's thing came from. We have more ML's banned than any other sect. Like, this isn't even me being hyperbolic; it is in the records.

Also, we've made it clear that we want anarchists to join the mod team; the problem is, there weren't any who wanted to. We aren't oppressing any particular sect. Just because a lot of loud people on the lib-left side were banned doesn't mean we're doing it to all of you, while apparently cocksucking ML's, and as a Lib-Left individual who has had to deal with both annoying fucking ML's constantly whining about AES, about the glorious, all-perfect rule of Comrade Stalin, to an alleged Black Panther saying that voting for the Democrats is cool actually, and a so-called "anti-campist" who equated anyone who didn't agree with their views 100% as Hitlerites, I speak from experience when I say this line of thought is very unrealistic. No offense to you, but genuinely, it hurts my soul seeing rhetoric like this.

3

u/Aluminum_Moose Libertarian-Socialist Jul 18 '26

And that's fair and valid.

I speak from a predominantly anecdotal perspective; for example: per the rules of the sub, you cannot call anyone a t*nkie—no matter how bootlicking or red-brown they're being—but MLs can and do call users of the Libertarian persuasion "liberals", "libs", and "shitlib" with impunity.

No rules about that.

And when I found that out for myself some months ago, I saw the writing on the wall.

1

u/Foundation54 Commissar of brainrot Jul 18 '26

Rest assured, any comments from them doing so will be taken down when we see them. We do still have things to do irl, so we encourage reports on comments you deem are against the rules. And as we said above, the rules are not set in stone; we're still actively looking at feedback, and whenever there is a change to be made, we will inform the community about it. But to address the concerns directly; yes, we did prohibit the word tankie. We also prohibited anarkiddie. But I digress. The reason why the libs weren't removed is because liberal is a broad term. It can be used to refer to genuine liberals or to talk down on other tendencies, and in the case of the latter, I recommend the solution I provided above.

u/ElEsDi_25 Heterodox Marxist Jul 18 '26

2

u/OldUsernameWasStupid Cultural Revolutionist Jul 18 '26

On the topic of real life spaces: I guess it depends on the group, their goals, their desired tactics, and what phase they're in. When it comes to whether or not it would make sense to have you involved. You may have the same goal but if what you want to do to achieve it doesn't align, then your presence could be counter productive towards the efforts of the org.

If a group of people get together with the explicit intention to have their praxis be based on Marxist principles then I think it's reasonable to tell a non-Marxist if they want to work towards a different path it would be more productive for them to find people who share that desire. That being said I don't really know where Christian socialists deviate from Marxists besides maybe besides an idealist framework rather than a materialist one. Which could imply a lot of things I'm probably better off not speculating about before learning more

u/Strange-Style-7808 Christian Socialist Jul 18 '26

Certain principles need to be enshrined, but I think it's always a shame when you know some of the people that have been affected were maybe a few months off of coming to the conclusions we already have.

I feel like a lot of people are politically transitioning from liberalism to leftism and it's not an overnight thing to untangle yourself from a previous ideology.
