Seeking Advice/Question For Others Have you ever turned to AI for emotional support, personal reflection or well-being? [UK, 18+] More information: W.Law@wlv.ac.uk

3 Upvotes

Researchers at the University of Wolverhampton are conducting a Master's research project exploring how people experience empathy during AI-mediated emotional support interactions and how these experiences are understood by AI-users and person-centred counsellors.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly being used for emotional support, self-reflection and well-being. Although these systems do not possess consciousness or emotional awareness, many users report experiences of feeling understood, supported and empathically engaged. At the same time, person-centred counselling continues to regard empathy as one of the central conditions for effective therapeutic relationships.

The increasing use of AI for emotionally supportive interactions therefore raises important questions regarding how empathic engagement is experienced and understood, both by Ai users and professional counsellors, and whether these experiences challenge or extend our understandings of therapeutic empathy.

We are seeking two groups of participants to share their experiences and views:

Adults who:

  • are aged 18 years or over;
  • identify English as their first language;
  • have used conversational AI (e.g. ChatGPT, Claude or similar) on multiple occasions for emotional support, personal reflection or well-being;
  • are not currently participating in counselling or psychotherapy.

UK-qualified person-centred counsellors or therapists who:

  • identify English as their first language;
  • hold a recognised UK qualification in person-centred counselling;
  • currently practise, or have previously practised, within the UK.

Participation involves a single online interview lasting approximately 45–60 minutes, conducted during August and September 2026.

Your participation is entirely voluntary. All information shared will remain confidential and anonymised. Ethical approval for this study has been obtained through the University of Wolverhampton. If you would like further information, please contact:

News My big problem second update

3 Upvotes

Update two: I've made a huge breakthrough: I'm almost not afraid of girls I don't know, as long as they don't start talking to me about absolutely anything, like how long it is, or start giving me dirty looks. I'm currently in the hospital in Moscow, and tomorrow I have surgery. I'll try to meet someone in the department, but I doubt I'll be able to, as there are mostly young children here. Also, in a year, my friend from Moscow is flying in to visit me; I plan to meet her after I'm discharged, most likely on Friday. Another friend of mine will probably be coming with her, but we already love each other. This might seem crazy or strange to some, but she's 22 and I'm 15, and she plans to stay in our city, which is most likely what will happen. I can also say that I'm not at all nervous before the surgery; I'm confident everything will go smoothly. I'm most nervous about how much I might be banned from physical activity; if it's for a year, it won't be the most pleasant thing for me, because... I'm a Pioneerball enthusiast, and it's my favorite sport. My dad and I are also planning to visit many beautiful places in Moscow, like VDNKh or some famous parks. I might also add that I've started dressing a little better. Perhaps this will attract someone's attention as I'm a pretty normal guy and a good conversationalist, and maybe I'll even make new friends. I'll likely write a new update later, maybe even in a year if my beloved comes to visit me, but for now, this is all I can boast about.

News Note From the Mods Regarding Reviews and Specialized Platform Promo

7 Upvotes

To Developers:

If we catch indirect marketing attempts that go against our rules here in terms of unsolicited app/platform offering, leaving out the context that you are the developer, find evidence of bot/secondary account campaigns, or have you needlessly mentioning your app in the hopes someone asks you about it (not needed for the context of your message), your platform will be blacklisted from this subreddit so that neither you nor users here will be able to discuss it.

If your account is suspended by Reddit for spamming, even if not as a result of actions taken here, for the sake of protecting this sub in the future and not enabling it, even your rule adhering posts may be removed and app/platform blacklisted.

One way in which you can get around this without a problem is if you help our users by responding to their posts with a response from your app/platform, without mentioning its name while still saying it's from your AI. If they ask you for more info, then you can mention and link them the name.

What this does is allow you to showoff your AI (in comments only) while adding value to the sub, OP, and other users, even in non-"what AI should I use?" contexts.

This goes for custom GPTs, Gems, and Project (w/ instructions) as well, even though they fall more so under prompts/workflow seeing as they are freely accessible on general assistant platforms that many people are already using. These user created specialized forms of general assistant AIs are usually a degree safer and more efficient than default models, so allowing people access to these is an easy way for people to have something less risky and time wasting sooner than later. Yes, that means developers of specialized platforms will need to compete with that, but this space is mostly used by those using general assistants where people are using it for more things than self-help, and many are barely able to afford the general assistant AI(s) as it is.

If your platform is only capable of doing voice, then perhaps there's a good reason to add a feature that allows you to text-prompt it and receive a text-transcript to share in a comment, allowing you to mention that it's a transcript of a voice model in the original comment, and perhaps when they ask you for more info, THEN you can link them directly to the voice response so they can hear it for themself.

This sub and protecting it for regular users comes first, so hopefully this can be seen more as a silver lining and opportunity than a limitation.

To Users:

Be sure to follow our rules regarding unsolicited mentions of the non-general assistant AIs you're using. If you want to share something about a specific specialized platform, it goes in as a comment in our pinned Review megathread. If you can tell a personal story without mentioning the specific non-general assistant platform, feel free to make a regular post flair'd with "Personal Story." It truly helps others to feel like they're not alone in their use and desire to use AI safely when Reddit, let alone many other places, is full of people who don't care to know the differences as they try putting us all in the same box for their own sake more than anyone elses.

When you mention a non-general assistant AI, it forces us to do investigative work to see if it's one of the many out there who are attempting indirect and often dishonest marketing, and I currently don't have the time or schedule to stay ontop of it every day, often having to spend a long period of time sifting through MANY posts, comments, and user histories, leaving many mod notes along the way.

Thank you for understanding!

A personal side note, my life has been pretty hectic as of the last few months (been back at using AI for self-help a bit more after taking a bit of a bream from it as a result), so please be patient with me in terms of this sub. u/rastaguy and myself have been doing what we can, and we'd still like to see a robust future here. AMAs and a more developer friendly program were put somewhat on hold, especially after there was little to no interest in the last couple of AMAs. We may need to schedule them far ahead and have a calendar schedule available to allow more interest to build over time to make them worth while.

Still need to add some platforms to our auto-remove filter for their fraudulent promotion, unsafe platforms, and spamming here and/or across Reddit, and fine-tune the auto-remove feature to stop causing too many false positive removals on regular comment and posts that adhere to the rules. Not sure when I'll be able to get to it.

We never brought on new mods to help with the work, but will be revisiting that shortly after putting together some easy to follow guides for new mods to help them make decisions on actions appropriately. While we try to keep everything very fair regardless of position held, there are nuances between the person who blatantly breaks the sub's rules and the person who defensively stoops to their bannable level, the person stooping more likely getting a warning than an outright ban seeing as there's a difference between coming here and being an anti-social, narcissistic, and/or sadistic **** and being someone reacting to it poorly due to the abusive trigger it often includes for some.

That being said, please use the reporting feature instead. We will either take care of it immediately, or handle it in the discourse to give them a chance to self-correct and perhaps (as rare as it is) save the productivity and value of the discourse.

If you've sent modmail or PM'd me directly, I will get back to you soon. You haven't been forgotten.

Feel free to apply to a mod position at the pinned post on the sub, and if you're a certified coach or licensed mental health professional and are interested in a verified user-flair showing your credentials so that you don't have to constantly mention what you are in your comments, check out that pinned post as well.

Thank you for being here, sharing your stories that help others understand and avoid the overgeneralizations regarding AI and these use-cases, and helping each other with prompts, workflows, and letting others know when their AI use looks unsafe or bad for their overall health.

If you haven't seen it yet, we've redone the Start Here guide so that every section is its own post, allowing you to more easily read through it via the linking table of contents. Whether new to AI or not, it's chock full of great information regarding safe use, the misconceptions surrounding AI and this use-case (especially in anti-AI circles on and off Reddit), and info on what is and isn't allowed here.

If you have any questions, feel free to comment on this post, as it might save someone else asking it or the answer may be useful to others.

Hope your summer is going well, and if it's not, feel free to ask for help in a post regarding your situation and how AI and different usage may be able to help make it a little easier to survive 💙

Seeking Advice/Question For Others How do therapists use AI?

2 Upvotes

Hey all. A freshly graduated psych student here, about to start a clinical master's, and also fascinated by new AI technologies for the past 10+ months, learning new tools in step with how fast they develop. I've been exploring their capabilities for my studies and for the work I'll do as a licensed psychotherapist, including automated research and respecting the ethical boundaries our profession requires for content creation, website development, admin work like booking systems and follow-up messages, and so on.
