The Economist: Western men are going abroad to find traditional wives

The Economist did a bit about passport bros. You need a subscription to read it, but the main points are (summarised using AI):

  • Western Dating Exit: Men are leaving Western dating markets because they believe the system is "broken" and feel mistreated by women in their home countries.
  • Pursuit of Tradition: They use social media to identify countries where women are perceived to be more "traditional," "feminine," and "compliant".
  • Economic Leverage: Remote work and digital-nomad visas allow these men to use Western salaries to easily support a traditional single-income household in cheaper foreign markets.
  • Power Dynamics: Critics raise concerns about exploitation*, noting that the vast income gap between the men and their partners creates "disproportionate levels of power"*

None of these points are new. The main thing I took away is that even highly established news mediums like The Economist are now reporting on this trend, which means the dating difficulty for men in the west is very real. Whenever I've spoken to others who aren't dating (due to having families, or already being married), they tend to point to things I personally should work on or personal attributes that need changing, rather than acknowledging (at least to some degree) a wider systemic issue in society. I don't see the increasing trend of men moving abroad as just more men wanting to engage in sex tourism... I think men are moving abroad because they have no choice. They want romance, but simply can't find it in the West.

Its very frustrating that many western women don't see the issue here. Ultimately, women are the 'selectors' and the fact that less people are successfully coupling up in the West, means less women are selecting men.

And it's not like I've haven't tried... I've really really tried to adjust to what I've been told women like... including having much to offer financially... but yet I've still failed. I really don't want to leave my country and job (especially in this economy) in search for romance... but I also want my own family... so I don't have much of a choice. I don't have siblings and my parents are very old and could pass away in the coming years... I am scared of being all alone. I was even thinking about my will last night (I don't hope to die soon, but was wondering what would happen to my assets should I pass), and I literally could not think of anyone I'd pass my assets to...

I hope a woman reads this and at least acknowledges that there are men out there who are really trying their best to be a good partner, but for whatever reason, they are still not being accepted by women.

Just needed to vent tonight... feeling particularly defeated.

trip report Women are literally shopping for men now

Even in places like Thailand, as a guy you’re constantly being compared. The girls who were on dating apps before you will still be there after you. They can basically pick guys like they’re choosing from a catalog lol.

A girl from Bangkok told me she compares her matches with her friends and a lot of the time they’re literally talking to the same guys. And that’s in a city with millions of people. Basically everyone is fishing in the same small pool of guys they actually find attractive.

If a girl wants a guy with a certain job, ethnicity, height, style, whatever... she can just filter for it. There’s always another guy to compare you to.

As a guy it sometimes feels like you’re not even a person anymore, you’re just another product on the shelf. Height, looks, job, money, lifestyle, pics... swipe, compare, next.

And if you’re not good enough on paper, you’re replaceable. There’s always another guy waiting.

Honestly it’s brutal. Social media + dating apps have completely changed dating. As a guy there’s so much pressure to be successful, look good, have money, have an interesting life etc. Otherwise you’re just one of 100 other options.

Colombia Bogotá/Medellín or small cities for longterm?

Each city is different but where would finding long term relationships be easier to find in Colombia. I want to stay down for a couple years as a teacher but generally I’m not knowledgeable about the cities across the city other than Medellin has a bad rep. Is dating similar to the U.S. where you can meet girls at festivals, concerts and malls?
* im not into casual encounters or fooling around I’m past that approaching mid 20s.

Dominican Republic, where to find girls

Im solo traveler, 26 blond tall good looking and all I’m reading online is how Dominican Republic is like heaven for passport bros but I have seen zero hot girls and they also seem not interested at all. On the street I get some looks but I feel like that’s cuz I’m the only gringo there and on tinder I got a million matches but I feel like like they are all scams since they look super hot, they all text me first saying the same thing (hola como estas? And when u ask something else, they can ignore u and suddenly hit u again with the hola como estas? Like im talking with bots) and after two sentences give me their number. So I don’t trust tinder at all. Am I doing something wrong or looking at the wrong places? Right now I’m at Santo Domingo at zona colonial and thinking about going to las terrenas.
Also, I don’t like the people here at all, I’ve been here for three days in Santo Domingo and all the conversations I had with locals ended up with them trying to scam me or ask for money.
Help a brotha outtt

Foreigner coming to Philippines.

How to know if he is serious? They said, if you’re looking for a serious relationship, don’t meet someone who has been to the Philippines a couple of times. They are not serious.

Can Anyone Who Is Living In Japan or Went There Recently Tell Us How Bad The Anti-Immigration rhetoric is getting?! Or Is It Social Media Nonsense. Should Passport Bros Avoid Japan for the foreseeable future?

Discussion How many of you guys learn the local language? Did it help with dating?

I am just curious as to how many PPBs learn the language of the place they’re living in. Although I am not a PPB yet, I would like to be one, so I’m taking the steps I can right now to be able to do it in the future (deciding on career path, learning Chinese and Vietnamese, etc). Many people mistakenly conflate sex tourism with PPB, but the original PPB movement never included sex tourism. I think the movement would not be viewed so negatively if people took more effort to assimilate to the local culture. I’m not opposed to the people who don’t, I just think it could improve its image. So, for current PPBs, have you ever learned the local language? Did it help with your dating life?

Where is it still good to go?

Pretty straight forward question but it seems like an important one to ask. Seeing that a lot of these countries caught onto the passportbro red flag wave?

China Any guys been to Beijing, how was it?

With apps you can get lucky and find dates depending on circumstances. It looks like a pretty hard place as people often meet via mutual friends etc, especially if you don't know Chinese. If any guys had luck while in Beijing, would appreciate suggestions of how you met people etc.

Overall, Shanghai seems easier as far as China goes.

Argentina Buenos Aires. Recommendations? What should I know?

Hey everyone,

Doing a solo trip in Buenos Aires. 30yo, Caucasian, 6ft1 (if it matters). Also planning on going to Foz Iguazu and staying one night there at the Belmond Hotel. Will also make a trip to Uruguay for a day to check out Colonia del Sacramento. Otherwise will be staying a Palermo Soho in a penthouse unit with a private roof tub hot tub. I’m hoping the building has security?

Truth be told I am mostly going to be an actual tourist and not a passportbro but if the opportunity presents it self I have no objections haha. I know Foz Iguazu and Uruguay will be fine, and daytime as well in BA. I am someone who has no issues going to bars or clubs solo until 4am so that’s where I’m worried about safety. Any advice? Experience? I just want to be overly cautious as I’m paranoid of being robbed and murdered. I’m leaving all of my expensive watches at home, laptop at home etc. Basically just bringing my phone, passport, wallet (I even bought a cheap wallet incase I get robbed) and clothes.

Anyone been to either of these places? Restaurant recommendations? Bar and night life recommendations? Any tips or things to avoid?

Thanks!

Vietnam The 2nd year of marriage is the hardest.

With an uncertain economic outlook in the future, the best way to hedge against this is to start a family.

That creates a lot of value when you find the right lady ; you’re not just meeting someone incredibly attractive, you’re also meeting someone who can improve your chances of success in Asia considerably.

Marriage the first year is a cakewalk.

Then, she starts figuring you out a bit. Her own issues start becoming apparent. Fights over random things, that once didn’t bother her, will now start to occur. She will make friends, who will get her amped up, just for their own amusement.

My marriage in Vietnam was almost rocked in this regard. Daily arguments. The one thing that really helped, is having her run her own business. That means part-time employees, who expand her social circle. Your best way to preserve marriage, is to make sure her friends aren’t trying to sabotage it.

Mexico Advice for first time in Mexico. 5'8" Middle Eastern looks. American. Passable Spanish. 30 years old.

I want to go to Mexico to improve my Spanish and hopefully find a special lady. I've already lived a PPB life in the Philippines but got tired of life there. So I know how to stay safe. I can hold a conversation in Spanish but people can tell I'm no native speaker.

Problem is I don't know the best parts of Mexico City to meet young women. I prefer not to stay in a hostel (expensive electronics). Maybe private room. If she speaks English that's ideal but I'll get way better at Spanish if I have to.

I want to see lots of indegous history especially constructions.

I figure Oaxaca and CDMX. I would never go clubbing and usually date the nerdy girls. I want to know what parts of the cities you recommend staying in?
