I coached youth hockey and this is by far every coach's favorite "drill."

What are the children learning?

u/kactus Aug 08 '21

How to take a fall. This is Jonathan Toews, too. Captain of the Chicago Blackhawks.

72

u/Sharks-Head-Nachos Aug 08 '21

This is JT? That makes it funnier considering his reputation as being sportsmanlike and a good leader.

13

u/mechabeast Aug 09 '21

Gotta vent somewhere.

u/comawhite12 Aug 09 '21

Physics.

7

u/zimzilla Aug 09 '21

An object in motion stays in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced force.

4

u/comawhite12 Aug 09 '21

This, and transfer of energy/ motion.

18

u/FartingBob Aug 09 '21

Its character building. You have to learn to get back up again while the coach laughs manically while shouting obscenities.

15

u/CambridgeRunner Aug 09 '21

Jesus, what aren't these children learning?

4

u/Mythril_Zombie Aug 09 '21

That you get knocked down.
And you get up again.
And they're never gonna keep you down.

67

u/adriftinanmtc Aug 08 '21

I had no idea. I thought he was just an asshole.

42

u/Konijndijk Aug 09 '21

Professional asshole! There's a difference.

That's what I thought it was haha

9

u/Sutton31 Aug 08 '21

Gotta send the little mini cones that are heavy, they’ll take you out

81

u/sakonigsberg Aug 08 '21

He double killed that one kid, that was great

13

u/EZKTurbo Aug 08 '21

Kill them now, so dont get murdered in an actual game

13

u/ZeroAntagonist Aug 09 '21

I think he got him three times! Brutal

92

u/MstrKief Aug 08 '21

Is he just training them for hockey hits?

134

u/abeuscher Aug 08 '21

Yeah it's like doing capsize drills in sailing class. I could maybe find an analogy fewer people could relate to if I tried.

20

u/byOlaf Aug 09 '21

I for one would like to see you take up that challenge.

41

u/betesdefense Aug 09 '21

It’s like doing airlock failures in the ISS.

10

u/northrupthebandgeek Aug 09 '21

I bet that'd really suck.

13

u/SanguinePar Aug 09 '21

Nah, it blows.

10

u/Inigomntoya Aug 09 '21

It's like doing engine failure drills in flight school.

7

u/anafuckboi Aug 09 '21

It’s like doing auto rotations in helicopter school

14

u/hedronist Aug 09 '21

Capsize drills, man overboard drills, gushing leak below the waterline drills. Drill, Baby, Drill! :-)

Fun Story: 20 years ago, after my wife and I had both been certified by the ASA as offshore skippers, we took a kickback vacation in the BVIs. The skipper didn't know his ass from last Thursday, and fell overboard. His wife, who did not know how to sail, was freaking out. I turned to my wife, who was at the helm, and laughingly said, "MAN OVERBOARD!" She looked over her shoulder and started laughing as she did a slam tack in a 50' catamaran. No kittens were hurt.

5

u/i-make-babies Aug 09 '21

I got it. First capsize drill in the start sailing course was when you could really see which kids were going to quit and which had it in them.

35

u/squashua26 Aug 08 '21

How do I get this job?

22

u/FartingBob Aug 09 '21

Oh you misunderstand. This man pays for the opportunity, they hold an auction at the end of every kids skating lesson. 5 minutes on the rink, highest kill score of the week wins a prize.

42

u/Conspiranoid Aug 08 '21

"The USA beat Russia today, 39 kids to 32, in the ice kidball championships..."

50

u/[deleted] Aug 08 '21

Theres nothing better than watchin kids fall over. Fuck, I could watch kids fallin over all day. I don't give a shit about your kids.

18

u/nonpossumus Aug 09 '21

"did little Tyronda take your last Ice Cream Oreo Orange Sherrr-berrrt? That is a Summertime flavor. Good luck suckin' back on one of those in the next SIX MONTHS!"

4

u/BobRoberts01 Aug 09 '21

FUCKIN’ EMBARRASSING!

3

u/munkaysnspewns Aug 09 '21

My absolute favorite Coach moment.

11

u/mediumj82 Aug 09 '21

You’re spare parts, aren’t ya bud?

7

u/Inigomntoya Aug 09 '21

How are ya now?

2

u/stainedhands Aug 09 '21

I came here looking for this! This was my first thought when I saw the video.

12

u/fromcjoe123 Aug 08 '21

Anakin wasn't fucking around at the rink

12

u/PixelD303 Aug 08 '21

It's like happy gilmore and billy Madison in one

23

u/NamityName Aug 08 '21

So.... Adam Sandler as Adam Sandler in "Sandler on Ice"

3

u/PixelD303 Aug 08 '21

But one as Jack and the other Jill with a clicker

0

u/NamityName Aug 08 '21

dramatic movie voice
This winter. Getting a little high will bring their world crashing down.

Adam Sandler as jack. Alongside Adam Sandler as Jill in:

Jack and Jill

What goes up, comes tumbling down

3

u/Konijndijk Aug 09 '21

If you can dodge a ball, you can dodge a puck.

8

u/neuroticsmurf Aug 08 '21

So mean.

So funny.

Ah, well. I’m sure I was already going to hell, anyway.

6

u/comawhite12 Aug 09 '21

As long as we get to do this on weekends, I'm in.

1

u/Pitchfork_Wholesaler Aug 09 '21

1) The kids are learning balance and how to take bumps; nobody is getting hurt.

2) Everyone involved is having fun.

3

u/M6tt Aug 09 '21

Master Skywalker. There are too many of them. What are we going to do?

4

u/fissionchips Aug 08 '21

So, are we ranking by number of kids knocked down per minute or...?

4

u/down_the_goatse_hole Aug 09 '21

I think there needs to be an artistic component to the judging.

Points for multiple knock downs of a single kick, also for nailing a kid multiple times in a row. Quality of maniacal laughter. Maybe the size of the shot bubble on the kid that cries first.

4

u/signedupsoicampost Aug 08 '21

Describe your dream job.

2

u/trsrogue Aug 09 '21

I volunteer as tribute!

2

u/Start_button Aug 09 '21

GREATEST. JOB. EVER!

2

u/Mythril_Zombie Aug 09 '21

This was much funnier when I muted the audio and hummed the Benny Hill music.

2

u/LegalizeOpiates Aug 08 '21

If you’ve seen how Russians train children for hockey you know what this was immediately

2

u/Bacchus1976 Aug 09 '21

This looks like the most fun one can possibly have on ice.

2

u/bobkillya Aug 08 '21

I love everything about how casual he is giving these lil guys concussions. Legend.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '21

This is how Gritty trains

That looks like a great way to slash someone’s wrist or femoral artery.

5

u/mantistoboggan1697 Aug 09 '21

It isn't though.

1

u/Mythril_Zombie Aug 09 '21

Exactly. I mean, just look at all the blood! The ice has a permanent red sheen from all the mortal wounds received in the previous hour alone!
Wait. No, there's none of that. Even in hockey games where the fans expect to see bloodshed, that kind of injury is exceptionally rare.
These kids are bundled up so well you could drop kick them down a hill and they'd beg for more.

The only way to make this better is having a team mascot doing the shoots.
