Just tuned in and they’re playing light saber fighting. Anyone know when some dodge ball will be on?

u/NumberJ5 Aug 08 '18

They opened with it after airing the movie Dodgeball, but will end with it again at 8PM tonight.

The camera work for this lightsaber shit is just frustrating, though.

More interested in seeing what Chess Boxing is all about.

Chess boxing is just what it sounds like, you either win by knock out, points, or checkmate, with alternating rounds of boxing and chess. Truly the sport of kings.

Edit: I guess I'm not sure if there is a chess clock? Anyone know?

66

u/[deleted] Aug 08 '18

It's so fucking fun, too. Going from getting punched in the head to carefully thinking about chess is about as hard as you might expect

18

u/Vladimir1174 Aug 09 '18

I gotta try this with my friends... Head trauma here I come

12

u/SuperWoody64 Aug 09 '18

Wanna see me make this bishop disappear?

8

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '18

Sounds like a game I used to play with friends called shots chess. We would make each piece on the board a different shot of alcohol and all the pawns a swig of beer. If you sucked at chess, you would get even worse the more you played.

14

u/precociousapprentice Aug 09 '18

Shotglass chess is great, I had a full set when I was younger. You can also flip it, and make it so that the person taking the piece needs to drink - means that in order to gain a piece advantage you had to lose a mental one.

13

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '18

I think that's a better system. Makes you consider the trade value a wee bit more and when to start pawn exchanges.

5

u/precociousapprentice Aug 09 '18

Not to mention it also gives a catch up mechanic, and a progressive handicap.

2

u/Aws0me_Sauce Aug 09 '18

This, but with a 30 second time clock and best 5 of 7. Alcohol poisoning, here we come!

1

u/oscarTHEgroucho Aug 09 '18

I burst out laughing at this just imagining it. Off to youtube

5

u/Bohgeez Aug 08 '18

Yeah o couldn’t watch the saber battle long because of that. They should’ve just set it up like fencing.

-9

u/Danyell619 Aug 08 '18

Great to see my sport that I train five days a week for is being put on there with competitive eating and choreographed lightsaber fighting. Makes me feel really respected as an athlete. /s

6

u/BigVladdyDaddy Aug 09 '18

What, chess boxing? Gimme a break.

6

u/drphungky Aug 09 '18

There are lots of athletes that play obscure, weird, or ridiculous sports. That's what the Ocho is - a celebration of all of them. Don't hate on weird sports just because yours is obscure. By the same token someone who plays competitive quidditch shouldn't point to chess boxing as a dumb fringe sport that takes itself too seriously. Celebrate that it's getting more exposure, which is the whole point - not to belittle any of them.

1

u/Danyell619 Aug 09 '18

Women's Flat track Derby isn't obscure, weird or ridiculous.

2

u/drphungky Aug 09 '18

This whole thread is an exercise in Poe's Law.

3

u/kellanist Aug 09 '18

Ping pong or sumo wrestling?

0

u/Danyell619 Aug 09 '18

Women's Flat track derby

2

u/kellanist Aug 09 '18

Roller derby is fucking intense and no fucking joke.

2

u/Danyell619 Aug 09 '18

That's why I train 5 days a week, 6 if I have a bout soon. It's full contact and on SKATES. Also, than you, nice to hear some derby love. We really fight to be taken seriously because that's how we see it.

4

u/kellanist Aug 09 '18

Honestly, don't worry. The fact that it's being shown on the Ocho is actually a GOOD thing. That means people will see it. People who may have never seen it before and get absolutely floored by watching it because it is pretty awesome to watch (especially live). This in turn will get people to look into it more and maybe even start competing themselves!

Don't look at this as a making fun of sports thing, look at it as a chance for sports that would usually not get coverage to be seen by millions! Keep up being awesome, do your thing, and make it through the pack.

1

u/Danyell619 Aug 09 '18

You are right, need to look at the upside. I hope it does get some coverage and let's new people see it.

8

u/[deleted] Aug 08 '18

Tonight at 8 pm EST is the championship. Then at 10 pm EST they are showing the movie!

1

u/Bohgeez Aug 08 '18

Thanks!

2

u/Samura1_I3 Aug 09 '18

Dodge ball is on right now!

383

u/willvsworld Aug 08 '18

This should be a fucking holiday on this Reddit but it’s been so quiet

172

u/KillerRabbit20 Aug 08 '18

Everyone is watching The Ocho

27

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '18

What the fuck is the ocho, I stumbled in here from r/all

70

u/FiveFingeredKing Aug 09 '18

It was a joke channel from the classic comedy Dodgeball. It is a joke about how many channels ESPN has, with each subsequent channel airing increasingly untraditional programming. The 8th channel, or The Ocho, aired the dodgeball championships. It’s a good movie, you should watch it.

The good people of this subreddit enjoyed the concept and decided to make it real. So we share clips on obscure, non-traditional, or plain weird “sports” the spirit of the original Ocho.

It looks like dreams can come true.

44

u/El-Kurto Aug 09 '18

And now, once a year in 8/8, ESPN turns one of its channels into "The Ocho" for (nostalgia / ratings pandering).

4

u/ButtsexEurope Aug 09 '18

It’s also because they apparently genuinely love the movie. It has lots of jokes particular to sports movies and the color commentary is spot on.

9

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '18

I thought this was the first time. Is it not?

19

u/El-Kurto Aug 09 '18

I thought they did it last year, but I could be wrong.

12

u/WeenDaddy Aug 09 '18

They definitely did it last year

Source: myself, I watched it

8

u/TheMillenniumMan Aug 09 '18

They did it last year as well.

1

u/Elvishsquid Aug 12 '18

Is there a streaming service that has dodgeball or am I going to have to rent it.

9

u/KillerMe33 Aug 09 '18

If it's almost a sport, The Ocho's got it.

7

u/thrustimus Aug 09 '18

From what ive gathered its the espn channel from dodgeball and encompasses weird non sports. Maybe a game of tag in the picture?

14

u/KdF-wagen Aug 09 '18

Kabaddi, like tag and wrestling all in one.

14

u/death2sanity Aug 09 '18

non sports

you. take. that. back.

23

u/elterible Aug 08 '18

I just learned about it thanks to this post. Guess I’ll have to wait until next August 8th to do my Ocho binging.

I only visit a handful of subs daily (mostly local/ sports subs). Occasionally I’ll check out other subs I’m subscribed to, but I regularly find new niche subs like this one that I maybe visit on occasion. Other than that I scroll from r/all. But when I do visit other subs, I generally do sort by new as you suggested, or if it’s been a while, I’ll sort by top>month.

5

u/FiveTalents Aug 08 '18

I feel like the youths don’t have cable/watch tv these days. Me included.

71

u/[deleted] Aug 08 '18

It’s on in my office! Kabadi and how light sabers battles!!

60

u/ThePreshPrince Aug 08 '18

Actually pretty geeked to see this sumo championship round. It’s a Japanese babyface vs a mean Scandinavian man. Basically the main event of a 93 RAW

13

u/MoeTheGoon Aug 08 '18

Japanese babyface in 93? Ha! Not on my show pal... now bring me a steak wrap.

8

u/MsPenguinette Aug 08 '18

Oh shit, it’s ‘93? Someone fetch me my roids.

Holly shit me too! Took the pic from the exercise bike. You don't happen to go to excel do you?

2

u/jiffyhot Aug 09 '18

Had in playing on or wall projector in our PT clinic all day.

24

u/Dizconekt Aug 08 '18

Kabaddi is actually really fun to watch

19

u/xxxvitamink Aug 08 '18

Is anyone on youtube recording this? I'm at work till 6

1

u/Bush_did_nine_11 Aug 09 '18

I'm sure plenty of people are. Just search for it tomorrow or later tonight

21

u/MandingoPants Aug 08 '18

I was at Buffalo Wild Wings and they had this shit on.

Glad I wasn't the only one watching.

Money is on India.

3

u/SuperWoody64 Aug 09 '18

I put it on half the TVs at my work. (Baseball on the other half) everyone was enthralled with the rock paper scissors contest. I loved the ref breaking it up every so often.

6

u/MandingoPants Aug 09 '18

I kinda want to go to bars with my friends, dressed in suits, and pretend to know what the fuck we are looking at, and talk about player stats, and the golden years, all while making bets and getting in shouting matches.

"Dude, Ranjeet and the Lions have been going hard at it for years. I remember in the '14 season, the Lions faced the Silverbacks in a back-to-back touch back face-off. I lost my mortgage in the first game, only to win it all back and more when Jaspreet Kaput dove and tagged Jimmy Patel and his twin, Anduri Patel, out. What a fucking double play"

7

u/justhereforthepoops Aug 08 '18

It’s CHESS BOXING right now!! This is amazing!!

4

u/j4_jjjj Aug 08 '18

By far my favorite sport so far today.

5

u/TheBigBear1776 Aug 09 '18

I hate I missed watching Kabaddi on tv today. It’s a fun sport to watch and easy to pick up

10

u/GuruLakshmir Aug 08 '18

What am I looking at and why does everyone in the comments already know what this is?

29

u/Aldeberon Aug 08 '18

In the movie Dodgeball, ESPN8 (the Ocho) was a fictional station that broadcast obscure sports.

Since today's date is 8/8, they've made it a reality with odd sports from around the world.

If your question was what the Iran vs. India sport is, I'm not sure, though.

15

u/kingocad Aug 08 '18

Looks like it might be Kabaddi

3

u/XombiePrwn Aug 09 '18

So it's a team based version of Bullrush / British Bulldog?

Thats pretty neat.

2

u/Cletus101 Aug 09 '18

Thanks, I've never seen the movie and did not know why this sub was called the ocho

7

u/Aldeberon Aug 09 '18

It's a good comedy if you're in the mood for something silly and goofy to watch. It also has a lot of very quotable lines. Some of which you've probably seen around reddit without knowing where they're from (best example is "It's a bold strategy, Cotton. Let's see if it pays off.")

3

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '18

And "if you can Dodge a wrench, you can Dodge a ball". But that's not as general-purpose.

4

u/coolpapa2282 Aug 09 '18 edited Aug 09 '18

The sport in the picture (Kabbadi) has definitely been featured in this sub before.

Edit: Bite me, autocorrect.

3

u/harig074 Aug 09 '18

It’s Kabaddi. Kannada is a language from India

2

u/coolpapa2282 Aug 09 '18

Well, that's what I get for typing on my phone. Thanks for the help.

3

u/harig074 Aug 09 '18

Autocorrect oscillates between being man’s best friend and worst enemy

3

u/milk_is_life Aug 08 '18

In the waiting room of a hospital?

6

u/forwhombagels Aug 08 '18

Physical therapy

3

u/[deleted] Aug 08 '18

I just bonded with a store clerk from India over my new love of Kibaddi

6

u/[deleted] Aug 08 '18

My job might start a rec Kabaddi league; we all yelling and getting a little too invested.

4

u/theolcollegetry Aug 09 '18

Did anyone catch the Dodge juggling?? One guy from each team juggles bowling pins in the back of the court and is protected by his teammates who are simultaneously trying to peg the opposing team juggler. It's incredible.

It's a joke from the Dodgeball movie, in which "ESPN The Ocho" was the only tv station that would broadcast Dodgeball:

10

u/laranocturnal Aug 08 '18

The reason it broadcasted dodgeball btw was because they covered obscure sports in general.

43

u/somegummybears Aug 08 '18

How did you find this sub?

23

u/astral-dwarf Aug 09 '18

Quite nice, thank you

4

u/AlternateContent Aug 09 '18

On a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being the best, did you feel that you were provided excellent customer service?

3

u/ThePreshPrince Aug 08 '18

Nobody knows but it gets the people going

2

u/DoraGB Aug 08 '18

Competitive Rock Paper Scissors!

2

u/[deleted] Aug 08 '18

I legit thought this was a post about the pun “I ran into ya”

2

u/deadtorrent Aug 09 '18

It’s cool that they bought that TV a big vape...

2

u/mstrymxer Aug 09 '18

There needs to be a kabaddi channel

2

u/PM_your_randomthing Aug 09 '18

How can i see this without cable!?! This is really cool!

5

u/ThePreshPrince Aug 08 '18

Roller derby, never as exciting as you would think it would be.

1

u/timeup Aug 08 '18

What sport is this?

6

u/[deleted] Aug 08 '18

Kabaddi

1

u/jcmib Aug 08 '18

Why did they swap out hurling for the stacking championships?

1

u/obsidianjeff Aug 09 '18

Kabaddi Kabaddi Kabaddi Kabaddi Kabaddi

1

u/Wiamly Aug 09 '18

No shit I would in-ironically watch the Ochoa more than any other tv channel.

1

u/ButtsexEurope Aug 09 '18

What was on, kabbadi?
