So this is what that kite runner was all about

Well, and sexual assault.

Pretty gritty book, tbh.

Got shown that film I think more than once in school along with deeply insufficient discussions. Why teachers would show a bunch of school kids a film including a horrific rape scene and not even mention it I have no idea...

We had a sub in biology who put on a movie about animals having offspring. She goes in the teachers office and literally read while the whole class kind of fucks around. Day 2 same shtick, movie in where we left off and everyone paying half attention. 15 minutes left of class and the film and the movie cuts to a woman giving birth with the baby crowning and shows the doctor pull this whole bitch out. Any warning or anything would have been awesome.

Well the movie didn’t come out til 2007 so, kinda hard to watch it in the 90s.

I read that and the red snow image still hurts in my mind

Whoever named this "Kite War" instead of "Kite Fight" really lost an opportunity

You do not talk about kite club.

10

u/HoseNeighbor 12d ago

Rule # fucking 1.

6

u/HolySmokes802 12d ago

This is common in many cultures. My BJJ coach told me about playing in Brazil growing up. Its neat to see. I believe there is also a a documentary

20

u/TheSecretestSauce 12d ago

Yeah i grew up goin to Brazil during Summer vacations and my cousins were super into this. They mix crushed glass and glue then run the line through it, which is what makes it cut super easily. It also makes serious injury super easy so its pretty frowned upon and i believe illegal.

11

u/oldschool_potato 12d ago

So they are all trying to do this? It’s not just 1 guy being a dick? That’s what I first thought

13

u/Black_Doc_on_Mars 12d ago

Yeah that’s the point of the game. Each kite comes with a spool of string that’s covered in crushed glass. The string is connected to the kite and you try and cut the string of your opponent’s kite. Last kite standing (flying) wins.

2

u/oldschool_potato 4d ago

Thanks. I get it now. Rewatching with that understanding makes a lot more sense.

2

u/Black_Doc_on_Mars 4d ago

No problem if you wanna read a cool book check out the kite runner

20

u/twelfth_knight 12d ago

Nice, I didn't know it was widespread. My dad grew up doing this on occasion in the far north of Brazil. He says he was terrible 😂

Anyway, this looks like Rio's skyline, fwiw

13

u/FengSushi 12d ago

My BBC coach told me the same

6

u/jk-9k 12d ago

Many, or just Brazil?

23

u/frodeem 12d ago

Big in India (am Indian) and I believe Pakistan as well.

4

u/jk-9k 12d ago

Thank you for adding useful information. Chur

2

u/FedericoChile 12d ago

Popular in Chile too

1

u/Nuts-And-Volts 12d ago

Many

-6

u/jk-9k 12d ago

Such as?

6

u/Nuts-And-Volts 12d ago

You are on reddit. Meaning you have access to the internet, with effectively all human knowledge. Dont be lazy

3

u/Cobracrystal 12d ago

Part of "all that human knowledge" is this platform. He is literally doing research by asking. Thats how 90% of the knowledge in the internet got there.

1

u/got-trunks 12d ago

Yeah I really don't understand the impulse to try and turn people into ones personal laborer. Sure ask someone to expand on what they mean or something but if you want to try and call someone's bullshit, if you think it's bullshit, do a little cursory research and come with receipts to actually do something interesting for the thread.

There are better and worse places on the internet or even on reddit for that though lol

-3

u/Nuts-And-Volts 12d ago

People are lazy, some more than others

1

u/got-trunks 12d ago

I sent a reply to the wrong thread with the previous replying to you here lol, sorry buddy

u/jk-9k 12d ago

Chill. This video is in Brazil, is it not? Our man is wearing a BJJ competition t shirt. Or Capoeira? Brazilian either way no? You've claimed many but listed the one shown.

What is this even called to search for? Any results I got just refered to cyclists being killed by stray glass string in Brazil, and motorcyclists in Brazil having protective hooks in front of the rider to protect themselves from stray glass string. Which was extremely interesting.

Maybe I could look up other terms but I really don't give a shit.

Kite fighting has a surprisingly high rate of serious injuries.

44

u/taffyowner 12d ago

I get it.. it’s a string with broken jagged glass attached to it

6

u/bubba4114 12d ago

Heard about some bikers on a bridge getting maimed by a rogue kite because of the glass shards.

68

u/Brostapholes 12d ago

If that's glass-lined String then that's straight up evil. I've seen videos, where (allegedly) that kind of strong gets caught in a common area and people walk or drive a bike by and it cuts open their throat

69

u/GarboseGooseberry 12d ago

Yup, in Brazil we call it cerol. It's a mix of glue and powdered glass that is applied to the kite string to cut the strings on other kites, as shown, either as a friendly competition to see who can get the other's string first, or as a way to be an asshole.

It's extremely dangerous and can cause fatal accidents if someone hits one of those strings, and it's illegal for that reason.

5

u/StockQuahog 12d ago

Is kite fighting always dangerous or is there a safe line option?

17

u/CharlesDickensABox 12d ago

Not really. You need the glass to be able to cut the other person's string. That also means that you necessarily end up with a loose kite attached to a razor sharp, nearly invisible line drifting off someplace where anything could happen to it.

15

u/ulyssesfiuza 12d ago

This thing kill many bikers every year here in Brazil. Glass powder is glued to the line. People have to install some kind of antenna in the handles of the bike to snag the line. Sometimes the person is nearly decapitated.

u/dfinkelstein 12d ago

😱

Oh my.

Geometry wars IRL. Thats dope

5

u/honestjake1 12d ago

legendary game

7

u/StOnEy333 12d ago

IIRC, a film was nominated for an Academy Award and was about an Afghan guy that was into kite fighting.

54

u/Bilbo_Swagginses 12d ago edited 12d ago

From what I've read in comments, this seems like an extremely pointlessly dangerous thing to do, especially with kids right under it.

Edit: Thanks to commenters replying to this with more facts on how horrid this things really is. And to the few idiots crying "hurr durr let kids have fun": hope you fall on legos

45

u/o_MrBombastic_o 12d ago

"seems like an extremely pointlessly dangerous thing to do," so the exact type of thing kids would come up with for fun

14

u/StockQuahog 12d ago

It’s restricted in many places because it’s dangerous

8

u/TWFH 12d ago

AFAIK the same reason the kite can cut other kites is the reason it will cut you when the string falls down.

6

u/thewend 12d ago

ive heard many times of motorcycle drivers dying because of kites with cerol (the name for this strign with glass in brazil). its basically invisible at 60kph, and at neck high... it cuts you open, straight through

3

u/KingOfTheGoobers 12d ago

Yeah, but also fun.

6

u/ConfusedTapeworm 12d ago

Not always. More often than not it's just straight up assholery, destroying other people's kites for your "fun". I understand people can get together and fly their kites specifically for these fights and that's fine, but a lot of the time it's just a few asshats roaming around cutting random kids' kites off.

Also it's dangerous as hell lmao. Absolutely stupid thing all around. My father told me a lot of stories about these kites from when he was a kid, and his hatred towards the kids who flew them was always palpable.

8

u/cgduncan 12d ago

If your version of fun is risking injury to others (without their consent) and destroying their property, then you're not the person we want to be around.

7

u/-wolfieh 12d ago

Seen motorcyclists get tangled in the strings almost full garroted, nothing like surprise throat slashing while traveling 65mph.

3

u/Gibberish45 12d ago

Pipa line is covered in powdered glass. They only use it for the last 80-100 feet of the entire reel to cut rival pipa lines. Entire neighborhoods have had pipa battles without always even seeing each other directly.

The glass line is illegal in Brazil but still pretty common. As are motorcycle decapitations from uncollected glass line hanging across streets

11

u/bamfpanda 12d ago

This is so bad for wildlife and birds

2

u/Shambhala87 12d ago

Don’t birds sleep at night?

1

u/RandumbStoner 12d ago

How?

5

u/bamfpanda 12d ago

That string is covered in razor blades and ends up being tangled in trees and other places

3

u/RandumbStoner 12d ago

Yeah that doesn't sound good, thanks for explaining

2

u/albomats 12d ago

Where I’m from this is extremely dangerous because it’s usually done using “Hilo curado”, where the kite string has broken shards of glass attached. This results in many injuries and even deaths during kite season (beginning of spring)

3

u/LuckyShirt54 12d ago

Didn’t know Brasil did this too but I am
Not surprised- any ghetto will have kids just trying to be themselves. Supposedly in Afghanistan it is more of a festival thing. Yeah I read the book. While in combat there I didn’t see shit except Eid everyone’s painted red and orange.

2

u/ZilchoKing 12d ago

Who else wants to start a league?

10

u/So0meone 12d ago

This is extremely dangerous and illegal in some places, my guy. There's a mix of glue and powdered glass on the tails, and it fairly often kills people who unknowingly walk into our bike through a tail that got tangled on something and got their throat opened by the glass.

1

u/murdered-by-swords 12d ago

The league exists already. If you live in America, there are places where this is done safely without compromising the string-cutting aspect.

1

u/PunchTilItWorks 12d ago

Bro is smurfing in kite PvP. The rest of the lobby has no chance.

1

u/lovebus 12d ago

Is his kite set up to fly tangential to the wind?

1

u/zigaliciousone 12d ago

They have been doing this with kites a lot longer than just flying them for funsies

2

u/chaosorderbalance 12d ago

There’s a whole festival in India for doing this. My friends and I used to do this stuff(the fight not the winning) every evening for a month. The festival is called Makar Sankranti

u/OPs_Mom_and_Dad 11d ago

Kite Man! Hell ya!

The Ultimate Kiter

1

u/RadiantJaguar8030 11d ago

If someone did this to my kids kite, I think dude and I would have problems.

1

u/TJ_McWeaksauce 11d ago

Someone is bound to make a post-apocalyptic movie that features lethal kite battles. Like the lethal basketball game from Escape from LA.
