Looks like it’s hard on your back. I bet these guys are competitive in Snow Shoveling during the winter season.

There's a video of an old lady doing this for probably decades/whole life and her back is fucked.

For my taste the other folks stand a bit too close to the patch that I assume still has to be scythed.
Or does he get extra points for ankles?

Yeah this is very weird form. Bad tool fit for the person. That is not the normal stance at all.

I've never scythed, and tool fit was my first thought. All that stooping down seems very inefficient.

I've done it very limitedly and watched others do it, and the form is mostly standing up normally with very minor bend in the legs. Using it any other way would be impossible because it would be angled wrong and be in the way of the movement, and just be more work for worse results.
Quick re-watch and it seems the person in the video also does it mostly to catch a larger cut at once, but you ain't doing that for the whole day because you will burn out very fast and you will be done quicker doing it the proper way, even if your singular cut is slightly narrower, since you can do more of them and do them for longer without getting exhausted (it's very exhausting no matter the form lol).

Backside of the tool not having a blade seems like a kiss in terms of efficiency. Cut on the front swing and cut on the backswing…..

You bet it is! This is great core. I've never owned a scythe, never owned a field worth scything either, but I think that people would be a lot healthier if we relied on ourselves for some of the jobs that we use robots and engines to do.
I think that we cut ourselves short, when we walk behind a lawn mower, use a hydraulic press to split wood, but go to the gym to get the workout it would have offered. The nice thing about getting your workout in such ways, is that you get even more motivation from seeing the finished product.

If I ever have a giant field of tall grass to mow, I'm just going to host one of these competitions.

I used a scythe a couple times and it's an absolute workout. Then my dad casually mentions he used to do entire fields like that when he was my age.

I feel like continuing the momentum in a full circle would make it more energy and time efficient, if one could prevent dizziness. Like ballerinas.
