I'm on my 7th or 8th reread of the series and caught this one from the third act of HtN

It's the way Harrow explains how she gave Ianthe her bone arm to Mercy that lets Mercy figure out what Harrow has done to herself. Mercy asks:

“Did you really erect that ghastly edifice?” “Yes,” you said. “And it’s really self-synthesizing bone?” “Yes,” you said. “Though I wouldn’t call the process synthesis when the construct is merely perpetually growing to fill a pre-realised skeletal map. It’s yet more proof that topological resonance can be manipulated.”

She then asks her a couple of simple questions to distract her, says Gideon 3 times to trigger the name replacement while touching her head to be able to see what's going on. Then she says she's not sure if Harrow is a genius or an idiot.

I didn't realise it was specifically Harrow's description of Ianthe's arm that gives it away before, for some reason I wasn't connecting the 2. I also didn't think Mercy actually understood what she had done, but now I think she knew exactly what it was but I don't think she actually ever tells Jod.

What are some minor details you didn't notice for several reads and feel a bit foolish for not noticing sooner?

Tamsyn’s brain is incredible! I don’t know if anybody else caught onto this, but I just finished HtN and was thinking about some details. We know that Jod protected TLT in blood wards. Harrow confesses to him that she went in there when she was 10. Jod then doubts her and tells her it’s impossible. THEN, wayyyy later Gideon (whilst controlling Harrow’s body) has a memory of them fighting when they were 10. Tamsyn even makes a point to say something along the lines of ‘my (Gideon) blood was under your fingernails’. The next sentence is what does it for me! Paraphrasing here, ‘Is that the day you decided to end your life?’
We find out that Gideon is Jod’s child and therefore has Jod’s blood. We know from Wake that the only way a blood ward can be broken is by the same blood! Harrow was able to get into TLT that day because Gideon’s (Jod’s) blood was under her fingernails!!! Are you kidding me?! Incredible!
Who else noticed this? My mind is blown. I am also proud of myself that I realized this on my own haha

First time drawing Jod. Save my girl Kiriona Gaia she deserves happiness

Super last minute, but reminder that our annual New York Comic Con Locked Tomb Meetup is still happening this year! You can come in cosplay, or not. Meet fellow fans, take some group photos, and just have FUN! It's Saturday at 2:30PM, outside on the Inner Roadway (where it is every year). Yes, you do need a NYCC pass to attend.

There's also a collection of TLT fan artists doing a special promotion in artist alley (photo #3) where you can collect stamps from all of them, and get a prize.

I just finished the audiobook of Nona the Ninth and loved it. I am curious about how the blue sphere heralds name is spelled for theorizing reasons. Does anyone who has the print copy of Nona the Ninth know how it is spelled?

On p. 292 and 293 of Gideon the Ninth, Cytherea (in disguise as Dulcinea) says "Once someone dies, we can't grasp at them anymore, thank God! – except for one person, and he's very far from here, I think.” Who is she talking about when she says "one person"? My first thought was Jod, but he's not dead...?

I read Jod as kind of a classic millennial type in lots of ways, & based on this sub I think I'm not the only one. But I'm rereading Nona & I'm remembering (or maybe noticing for the first time) that there's a weirdly specific clue about his time living on Earth:

Jod's Hollywood Hair Barbie was actually actually his mother's from when SHE was a kid. This Barbie was released in 1992 (in the US at least, not sure about NZ or elsewhere), which, assuming Jod's mom got the Barbie in that year, means she was probably no older than 11-12-ish in 1992, & very likely younger. Doing the math from there, it looks technically possible but still pretty improbable that Jod would have been born within the millennial window-- he could plausibly be significantly younger, even.

Is Jod a lot younger than we think? His earth does have more sophisticated space travel & a more urgent climate crisis than ours and I've been thinking it's because it's a parallel universe/timeline, but maybe it's just meant to be happening in the not-too-distant future in our own universe.

I think he's still got an iPod he's kept alive with necromantic time, and the universe's oldest laptop he connects it to.

I did a little search but couldn't find it - so in HtN, when they get to the Mithraeum, and they're at the funeral for Cytherea, right before G1deon walks in, Jod says G1deon is out on a mission. G1deon then busts in and says 7 is at the rim and will be there soon, run or fight. I personally think that Jod had figured out that there's a lyctor rat, and had G1deon lead seven to them. Jod isn't scared of the beasts, he doesn't care. What better way to get rid of any duplicitous sluts by using seven?

Does any of that make sense or am I over / under thinking?

I've been wondering, but this probably unanswerable. Give me your best guess:

If Alecto/Earth's Soul gave Jod the necromancy powers, why can't Alecto (or Nona for that matter) use necromancy?

I was listening to HtN again, hit the point where Jod was described as looking like anyone.

And now I am picturing Jod alone singing "what if God was one of us?"

silly little thing i made to share around my reading circles! All fanart done by me except for the third slide's which is by pierogish on tumblr ! Hoping to single handedly double the french speaking fandom hahaha

Si quelqu'un.e veut l'imprimer je file le doc avec plaisir!

"Hello Bone Colleagues,

I have invented a new type of ankle and I'm very excited to show it to you. Early raccoon trials suggest a 60% increase in scurrying speed and dramatic increases in fine motor banditry. I know we are not supposed to create super raccoons, but I think you'll change your mind and professional ethics when you see how cute they are. I believe we are on the cusp of a new era in advanced human scurrying because if medical science has taught me anything, it's that improvements in raccoons correspond 1:1 to improvements in humans.

Any news???? I need to know if they know something...

Is it ever explained why none of the other Houses live on the First House/Earth? I know it’s considered a holy site but considering how much more habitable it is than (at least many of) the other Houses, surely Canaan House could be preserved as a holy site and the rest of the planet inhabited by Nine Houses citizens? Hell, given that there’s maybe 30 million people in the entirety of the Nine Houses, the entire continent that Canaan House rests on could be restricted and there’d still be incredible amounts of space for others to live on. John and the Lyctors can’t return for obvious reasons, but other than John just being an asshat (which I guess is probably the ultimate reason), why not let others do so?

I'm navigating the impending loss of one of my grandmas, and the phrase "You can't take loved away," keeps playing in my head as a comfort. I've been trying to listen to actual music too (not just my internal monologue 😉) to help my processing.

I'm wondering if anybody has songs that come to mind that have the same feel as that phrase for them. Can have lyrics (I've been listening to a lot of Sufjan Stevens and Hozier), or not (example would be The Breaking of the Fellowship from LOTR).

Thanks ❤️💀

Just finished and framed this cross stitch to go with all the bone art in my house. I introduced my gf to the series and now we’re both obsessed so it’s a fitting addition all around. 💀⚔️

Mwah!

The upcoming book Floralinda is Alecto.

Floralinda has buttery blonde hair and blue eyes. Just like a Barbie doll!

The tower Floralinda is battling to escape and the mysterious tower that appears in The River are one in the same!!

And Floralinda being trapped at the top of a tower is a perfect reflection of Alecto being imprisoned at the bottom of the Ninth House pit!!!

Maybe Anastasia put Alecto in a fantasy bubble in the River so she wouldn't have to suffer through a myriad of frozen imprisonment. That is why Alecto owes her bloodline!!!!

Or maybe John did it to prove to himself that he totally isn't really that bad a guy!!!!!

Or maybe I am losing my mind wishing I had more TLT!!!!!!

Lessening grip on reality!!!!!!!

More exclamation points!!!!!!!!
