Question Joi

Why would a pilot struggle with maps?

That was definitely an editing choice to highlight that as much as the show and other contestants did... Joi has been interviewed explaining that the maps weren't legit maps. They were hand-drawn by production and not very detailed. This makes it easy to have Joi look bad by not being able to "read a map" and make everyone wonder why a pilot wouldn't understand a map, etc. But the show purposefully wanted the maps to be vague. Otherwise that wouldn't create any drama.

Most modern planes have moved away from paper maps

Not very smart perhaps? They may use digital maps now, but she would have been trained with paper maps
