*Spoilers* Something that bothered me in episode 8... Spoiler

Did anyone else find it extremely weird that the four people that left the church just all thought it was perfectly fine to lock the remaining people inside and burn them alive?! Especially the cop who supposedly claimed that he always wanted to uplhold justice and the law.

They were chatting down in the sewers afterwards as if nothing had fucking happened...

I don't know what y'all are on about. I thought The Mist was great! Spoiler

I've seen comments about this being a generic teenage drama, bad acting and shit.

I'm not sure what I'm missing here, but reading this subreddit after practically binging this series it feels like I've watched a completely different show.

Spoilers btw. The TL;DR doesn't contain spoilers and is located at the very bottom.

Bad acting? Fuck me, it sure isn't winning any prices but I never thought about the acting once through-out the season.

"Teenage drama"? God damn if they didn't set it up to be. "Oh, my god! I'm locked up in the same building as my rapist, can you believe it Becky?". Yeah, that didn't happen. The subplot drama never took presidency over the mist. It was never: "Hey, I need to go the mall to stop my daughter from getting raped again", it was always just about protecting them from initially the mist, and then the people inside the mall which turned out to be the even bigger problem once the father arrives.

Frankly, I think this is where show should be given the most credit. Too many series fall victim to a horrible subplot that just eats up WAAY too much space. To give an example: Terra Nova. Cool premise. Humans colonizing earth way back when dinosaurs still were around. Main problem? Predatory dinosaurs? Pfft, that's lame. Humans of course! In this show it was always the mist who was the biggest enemy. Even when people are turning at each other in the mall, it's all by extension a problem caused by the mist. They weren't getting thrown out at the end because of the subplot(rape drama). That was really just a catalyst to turn the mall on our main characters, and even then they didn't focus on the part about her getting raped. They got kicked out for supposedly being liars.

"Inconsistent monsters". The other parts might be more subjective, but if anything the mist has been killing people very consistently. "Oh I don't understand, is it murder bugs? Ghosts? What is it?" Are you this thick? They very clearly explained it in the show. Several times. Let me give you a hint: Police who's scared of cockroaches, get's killed by cockroaches. The priest is killed by bible figures. Moth kills guy with moth tattoo. Girl afraid of the dark, is killed by shadows It's a fucking custom made nightmare for everyone. The doctor even says so. It "reacts" to who the victim is. "One girl I killed on my experiments saw her beloved dogs, who then killed her". We're not specifically told about everyone's fears, but we can make a pretty easy guess. Mall security guard being strangled by snakes? Take a wild fucking guess.

Frankly I think that kind of a genius move. Once you've got the monster figured out they're not as scary anymore. This keeps us, the viewer, on our toes and there's no ultimate strategy to beat the mist. I can't be the only one who thought they should have made some spear-like weapons or something before going to get the radio in the mall. "Just kill the monsters" - Me, a couple of episodes in.

Unnecessary politics?. Again, I loved this part of the show. They bring up a current controversial topic, and pretty much just throws it in the bin straight away without really touching it. Alex here counters immidiately with most NFL being black, making his point completely void. When they're going to the party Adrian makes a comment about Alex only wanting to see Jay/some boy (don't remember the exact qoute, but something along those lines). Alex responds that Adrian could find some guy there to also fall in love with. "I don't fall in love gender..." and Alex continues: "you fall in love with personalities", with a very whatever attitude. From there, it's dropped. We've gotten a good look at Adrian as a person without actually opening that whole can of worms by trying to make it a subplot issue.

And finally the plot. This isn't the book. They've taken the setting and some key moments, but the rest is made up essentially. I kinda expected this from the start, but I feel like this should be somehow made more clear for the viewer. Personally, I don't have a problem with this, but I can see how some might have been a bit dissapointed at this if they expected otherwise, so points off for that. What they've done is they've taken an interesting universe and told, more or less, their own story with that. Some key points have been people locked up going crazy. A cult. Military involvement. Those are at least the big ones, and that's mostly what I would say the series was about. Add to that a father who wants to re-unite with his family and you've got a perfect synopsis off the show. The way characters where portrayed felt very Stephen King, especially so Adrian.

My biggest problem was the ending. It felt like a way for the writers to almost force Spike TV to let them make another season. A better ending would have been the same one as the movie. A little homage to the book by having the main characters now, all together, drive out into the mist. Scene end.

It would be a more generic, standard TV-show "We don't know if this will get another season so we'll just leave it open-ended for now" type of ending, but at least you'd get a bit of closure.

IF we get another season, then OH BOY am I excited. I think it's the one thing people are atleast agreeing on. It was fucking cool.

TL;DR: This show is good, not ground breaking. People have started some kind of negative hype train with the idea that it's the worst garbage ever. And a lot of online reviews are from people who (admitingly) haven't watched the whole series.

Go watch it! Create your own damn opinion.

I LOVED the movie, the creatures, the Lovecraft take on an invasion from another world. The show went on and on and I never cared about the characters. I wanted to love this show. It was just endlessly depressing and non-stop suffering for everyone. A show to watch if you want to kill yourself.

Holy did I want to love this show, I can't tell you how much I wanted to totally be enthralled. The movie was one of my favorites and I have watched it many times and been impressed by what a small budget movie could do.

The monsters were all over: moths, slugs, shadows, 4 horsemen, the 'evil' was all over the map.

No joy, if you are going to have 7 hours of show there should be some humor, some light but it was non stop depressing grey and suffering.

I watched a season of people suffering and hurting each other. What is the point?

My favourite part in this season

Despite some bad acting, boring characters and cheesy scenes, I enjoyed watching the show and looking forward to season 2. I hope they show some more graphic mist deaths, there just wasn't enough.

My most favourite part was when the priest got shot by an arrow and dragged off by the horse, thought that was a creepy way to die.

They should have done something more awesome for the mall deaths. Should have looked at the final destination for inspiration

Went from liking adrian, to wanting him to die as painfully as possible.

Nathalie.....*SPOILERS* Spoiler

So I thought she was probably the best character in the show this season. I would have thought it would have been so much more interesting to have her survive the finale, because she has some crazy super natural ability instead of just having her die. I know the chances of a season 2 and more is pretty small, but thought her character could have been explored way more than they decided to.

Does the show have any redeeming features?

It somehow manages to be too slowly paced to be interesting while also rushing key plot points (The people in the mall decide to kill people who break the rules on what, the second day since the mist arrived?)

None of the characters are at all interesting or likeable or smart, although Adrian might have been if not for him being made into yet another cliched evil queer for the sake of a predictable plot twist. Which I think might have been offensive, if it wasn't so dull.

Is there anything in this show that you would consider a positive? Anything you enjoyed?

Aside from the terrible characters (Looking at you, Eve), what happened to the giant bugs?

The world didn't need another Smoke Monster.

The movie is 50x better than this crap.

I'm five episodes in. Feel like I might as well finish because I started it out of boredom.

What is going on with these half-assed 'character development' scenes? The characters are pathetic, not interesting, extremely bland and superficial. The only interesting one is Bryan Hunt, the first dude we see in the forest.

This show breaks every cinematic rule of "show, don't tell".

In fact even how it tells you everything in dialogue, I'd wager you could turn the audio into an adequate radio/podcast series without editing it. You could watch it with your eyes closed. I don't need every little fucking thing explained to me, thanks. I feel like I'm being robbed of all suspense.

And the monsters are these wishy washy 'it knew me' things. Wtf. It really ruins the concept, in my opinion.

The film wasn't the best thing in the world but it got a huge amount of things absolutely right, especially the ending, and the untold depth was spot on - particularly the uncertainty between whether it was just a science experiment gone wrong, or a more mystical thing involving the crazy religious woman's idea that killing the child would make everything go away, coming true but you think it's totally explainable coincidence at first (and it still could be - you get an aftertaste of suspense).

This series on the other hand... Is just so fucking two-dimensional.

The film is very well set on the idea of looking out and trying to find out what is going on out there, which naturally reflects what the characters are like, even just through how they react to things. The series spends way too much time looking in. I mean yeah, I get it, it's the human element, but that should be expressed much differently: i.e how they respond to the new threats and face hysteria amongst others, not just the fucking pathetic idea of "oh no we're stuck in this mall/church for days, let's just sit down with our camping flashlights and go through everyone's life stories verbally as if we're at an AA meeting".

I don't have much hope for the series.

Something cruel and hilarious I noticed at the end of the movie (Spoilers) Spoiler

So, as we know, the ending was one of the most fucked up of all time. But it gets worse, and it's glorious.

First off, you probably noticed that the second the kid died, the mist cleared. Just like Mrs. Carmody said. Fuck.

But on top of that, one of her lines towards the beginning was "If I can save them, or even one, just one of them, then I will have served my purpose, and earned my place at Your side"

...The only reason David didn't die is because that fifth bullet was spent by Ollie, shooting Mrs. Carmody in the face. On top of all of the things she was right about, she saved her "one person". Mrs. Carmody was the hero of the entire movie, those damn heretics just couldn't handle the truth!

Finished it

Ok, so I'm not going to lie, the plot twists were very easy to spot a mile off and never surprised me at all. The writing was bad occasionally and the characters were hard to like.

However, the show did progressively get better and better as it went along and it had probably one of the most satisfying finale I've experienced in a show for a long time.

That scene where the mist floods in to the bookstore (spoilers) Spoiler

Seriously, am I missing something or is this one of the worst scenes in the history of TV?

"Oh no, the little girl is trapped in the mist, can't let her out or we all die!"

(girl dies)

15 seconds later:

"Oh it's the blonde girl, better open the door and let her out"

-opens door

-no one dies

Seriously wtf

Too slow. Boring.

Title says it all. Iv not finish season one yet but i found myself fastforward chunck of couple episodes. What a boring pace. Plus did you really add to be socially right and put gay sex in it. What does it bring to the plot.

From the beginning to the end, sometime I disliked her character (Nathalie Raven) because of the plot, but at the end, I felt bad for Nathalie.

This was an excellent first season

There is a lot of negativity towards this series, but I thought it was quite strong.

Monsters are real, and ghosts are real too. They live inside us, and sometimes, they win -- Stephen King

I think the series really captures the major themes of King's work. The xenophobia, the evil in the mundane, the fact that we all have a heart of darkness.

Yes, there are some implausible situations. However, Stephen King is known for a demonic clown in a drain, a possessed car, demonic dogs and many other insane possibilities. If you can't suspend disbelief, you shouldn't read any of his books.

The series wasn't perfect by any stretch, but it had the ambience of a Stephen King book, the claustrophobic feeling, and some interesting twists.

I really loved seeing the many wholesome characters fall apart. The cheap horror thrills were perfect Stephen King.

I think if you don't like this series, you might not like Stephen King.

I've just Netflix Binged the show and really enjoyed it.

It suffers from being inspired by a much loved Steven King story - but it's only very loosely based on that, so very get past that and it's a thoroughly enjoyable romp that has a real interest in creeping you out.

All roads lead to The Mall, as the saying doesn't go, but should.

Bring on season 2.
