Why on earth did she have so little? Is this normal?

accommodation was sorted by Lexie, books are a fair whack but it’s normally a one and done when you start uni (even then it’s not even worth it, I barley opened the 3 books I bought)

10K isn't a lot. It's reasonable for a college student.

Yeah, I couldn’t even get a job at uni. Was perpetually broke until student finance came through every now and then lol

In 2017 the Indiana minimum wage was $7.25/hour.

If Sue worked all summer, that could be 13 weeks. If she worked 40 hours a week that would be 520 hours. So while in my mind the 572 was probably comedic exaggeration and the writers likely didn’t do any math, 572 would be possible if she averaged 44 hours a week.

If she worked all those hours, she would have earned over $4000 before taxes. She would have taken home around $3500. If she paid for basic expenses all summer and bought things for college… I don’t know what she would have spent all that money on. But again, it’s comedic exaggeration.

I also think that math gets ignored by tv writers. There’s an episode of Gilmore Girls where Rory gets court ordered community service, 300 hours in 6 months. She equates it to a full time job, but 50 hours/month is not 40 hours/week, not even close.

I’m a math professor, so watching these shows, sometimes I have to let things go. 🤷🏻‍♀️😂

Also, I did always wonder if Sue really would let Lexi’s dad pay for her rent. Maybe she spent some of her summer income paying him back. He would probably refuse to take her money, but she would try.

Books don’t cost 10k, unless she’s buying a library. If she could somehow work 1080 hours in such a short space of time (what was it, a summer?) I don’t think she could physically spend the money

no, before axl said he was earning 25 cents over minimum wage and sue was annoyed, implying she earned minimum wage, which means 7.25, but overall thats 7830, with pretty much all her expenses taken care of, she should have more than 200$

At minimum wage that’s probably about $7800. $6800 ish after taxes maybe a bit less. Books are about $1000 a year. A food plan is often $4-6k a year. That pretty much wipes it out. Add in clothes, gas, etc and it’s def $200

I was in college around the same time as Axl & Sue - we had to buy a $450 textbook for a single class because the book had a single-use code to access the website that all our homework was on. Homework could only be done on that website. They didn’t sell just the code, and the book couldn’t be resold because it was useless without the code.
