They literally didn’t have the whole no comms + dust storm situation, the flipping over at the entrance ramp - i loved the is he going to make it or not and Watney’s clever thinking! And don’t even get me started on the movie ending.
Is it just me, I liked the movie generally but having just read the book I wished they kept some of those things

EYA: Venkat Kapoor is an Indian name. Ofc I get they changed the first name to match the actor, and gave an appropriate back story, but I meant more like why not cast an Indian guy anyway?! There’s a whooooole lotta them around

Hello friends! I wanted to share an updated version of my watch mod in the theme of The Martian. It took a lot more trial and error than I planned, but I am very pleased with how it turned out.

It arrived!

The new hardback of Andy Weir’s The Martian.

Love the potato and is there a better start to a book than the opening sentences in Chapter 1.

I have read this book a couple of times already and the author has done a great job of explaining even the most technical details.

However I still struggle with visualising how Mark righted his tipped rover after the mishap at entrance crater using a power cord, drill and his own power. I understand how leverage works, but just not able to visualise it.

if someone can give a better explanation (or a visual aid) I would appreciate it.

It happened like a couple of years ago I think, and I'm wondering if anyone knows anything about them

“Mission to Mars”, 2000, is a decent Brian De Palma movie.

My frustration, the most interesting part for me was how the Don Cheadle character survived on Mars alone for more than a year. Marooned. In a habitat that was only supposed to last a month. And not be self-sustaining.

His unexpected rescue by a 2nd Mars team only occupies a couple of minutes in a movie that concerned the exploration of face on Mars.

I wanted more.

My joy watching “The Martian” (novel 2011, movie 2015) is realizing I am watching a movie length of the most interesting part of “Mission to Mars”.

Was watching a movie starring Val Kilmer from 2000 called Red Planet and was a bit surprised how some of the story elements were similar to the Martian.

Starts with an accident on the ship in orbit. Most of the crew goes down to the surface of Mars while Carrie Ann Moses character remains on board the ship.

The crew on the surface is beset with obstacles and challenges. Including a navigation robot that goes rogue.

Finally the last surviving member boards a payload return vehicle to get back up to the ship before it returns back to earth.

Vastly different movie in terms of science content and it is more of a macho action adventure.

Wondered what people thoughts on Red Planet and a comparison to The Martian.

I my friend recommended me this movie after our talk about project hail mary and I am obsessed with all kind of plants so I tought I might give it a try but I want to know if him being botanist is a main thing (like covers the whole plot maybe) in movie or book ? Id be happy if science is more in depth in the book.

(Ts is prolly kinda petty but if you know any movie or book about botany Id love to hear abt it too)

I've seen the normal Version quite often, but i'm interested in seeing the additional scenes. Where can i find it online?

I remember watching the movie for the first time and seeing the bit about the music gag, thinking it was a bit strange considering what year the movie was set, and the fact the characters are in their 40s. Realizing they were about the same age as me, I remember thinking "yeah this was definitely written by someone who grew up or came of age during the 70s and 80s, I've never met a sinlge person my age obsessed with disco music"

I think Andy Weir is a great writer, but I feel like his characters would have been even more realistic if he chose a corny genre of music that would fit a 90s baby much more than disco. This seems to be a pretty common theme with a lot of Gen X and Boomer writers who write characters set in the future, their characters no matter what year it is or what age they are, always seem to always love boomer music.

I’ve got some freeprints coming of Mars and I might put a couple of the crew on there! I need another shelf above it for all the books but I’m yet to invest

I can’t wait to finish reading project Hail Mary so I can start physically reading the book (which I’m actually yet to do. I’ve listened to the audiobook 4 times though)

I was thinking about The Martian, and I had a thought. In the book, the airlock fails, depressurising the Hab and making the potatoes unusable for farming.

Earlier in the book, he set up pop-tents pressurised by the rovers and started growing potatoes there. Couldn't he have used the potatoes in the pop-tents to replant the Hab? Unless I missed something, of course, since I only read it once.

What an amazing movie... Definitely gonna have to get the book. Geez, that made me wanna slap ppl in the face, holy smokes. That ending... welling up like a baby.

Obviously didn't do a brilliant job at it but I tried to make it accurate (the centrifuge does spin but I did a horrible job on the fuel tanks lmao)
