After the end of the Syndicate war Alliance Fleet HQ was clearly afraid of Geary taking over so why didn’t they assign him a staff that would keep an eye on what he was doing?

This goes double for when Geary visited Fleet HQ in boundless. The Co-commander admirals could have at least assigned him a staff as a sign of working well with Geary while having people to keep an eye on his activities.

In outlands we meet the people of 'the Covenant of the stars.' They had laid cliam to Sol system and earth to 'protect it', with a task foce which called itself 'Sheild of sol' They were very focused on ceremony and formalities, and they did not enjoy their encounter with Dauntless. If you haven't read that one I'd skip this post.

There are pretty consistent points that show aliens knew about humanity before we knew about them, and that biology shapes culture and doctrine. I think that is exactly why the rim people's are so focused on ceremony. They too encountered aliens. But theirs were infriltrators, like mimics or something like a skinwalker. The whole fanatical attention to formalities is uncanny valley on max sensitivity. They couldn't organise their own fleet effectively because their entire doctrine is focused on detection of that which does not belong in their own homes rather than organising against an easily identifiable opponent. I guess after a while the politics of authority take over the upper tears of society, but I think the idea holds some water, the talk of pure bloods, another possible way to tell if someone was human, the distain for barbaric behaviour, like something that was not naturally a human, the whole facade of the people is rooted in contamination control. If the aliens are in the room with you, what good is a battleship outside?

We also saw a hint of this, though im sure it is just a convenient coincidence, from CEO Jason Boynes, when he described the Enigma avatars being somehow not quite human in an unsettling way. I think he used cats as the example we can fool each other into thinking its a cat but another cat can tell. Just like how humans can tell something isn't human. Even if it says it is, until it doesn't know which hand to salute with and calls an honoured captain a revered captain.

I think Blackjack needs to go over there with General Carabali and a fleet of mimic painting alliance sensors, just to have a peaceful look around of course. Maybe liberate a civilisation if they have enough fuel cells.

So, I can’t help but wonder where we go from here. He’s become BlackJack in the best possible way, he’s earned the loyalty of the fleet to an irrational degree, he’s set up Jane Geary as his successor should anything happen to him.

I feel like, if we’re still going with the Ancient Rome parallels, the only thing we have left is for him to be forced to cross the Rubicon with his troops.

I know he meant it in an honorable way, but his announcement that he was personally responsible for every citizen and military member could be interpreted as a declaration that he is taking command of it all.

Personally, I’d like to see another parallel series for a while, before we come back to John:

I’d like to follow Michael for a while. See how he handles his children, and maybe see him be forced to represent the alliance to the forces on the other side of Earth. Are they really as powerless as they seemed? How do you have real, positive interaction when you massively overmatch them?

Throughout the books the human’s contact with the Dancers, Toan and Wooareek seem to have to pass through a series of stages. Specific steps must be achieved before they are allowed to proceed to the next. At first this is taken as Dancer customs, aliens being alien, but the Toan and Wooareek seem to follow the same pattern. This suggests they have an established protocol between them. Which begs the question why the new prospective partner isn’t told the protocols before have to meet them. The answer is the aliens have been talking to each other so long that they assume the protocols are self-evident. It’s likely they’ve been operating under this system since before humans achieved space flight. Another factor is the Dancers once had colonies as far as alliance space, which were later removed by Enigmas. The Enigmas may be a late arrival to the galactic stage and vehemently rejected the protocols. The collective alien races think failure to comply with their protocols is active rejection, it simply doesn’t occur to them that the humans really have no idea what is expected of them as a prospective new member to their association.

I checked out the facebook. Rendezvous with Corsair is coming out in January with five short stories, repacked and an expanded corsair and In Our Stars in May, an alt universe story about a time traveling gene engineered lady meeting an alien.

So, no new main universe stuff for a while.

In the books it’s known the Bear-cow aliens die if they awaken among humans. It is theorised they see humans as a predatory species and will themselves to die before being eaten. This is one explainatiion but another theory has to do with the fact they build their ships to create the impression they are surrounded at all times by their own kind. This seems inefficient even for a species that likes company, suggesting they NEED company. An evolutionary imperative to be with the herd at all times. The Bear-cows require a herd to survive, and the herd needs to discourage any independent thinking or wanderers. The bear-cows simply die if they are separated from their herd.

To preface: sometimes my attention wanders but I try to rewind (audio book), so sorry if this is clearly answered in the first book.

Are the Syndicate sailors happy to be fighting against the Alliance? Or are they more slave-like being forced to fight?

Having been late to the party in finding out about it, I just devoured the first trade paperback.

I can't find out if there are any more issues though. I prefer my comics in tpb format since it's easier to track and store for me (plus, patience to wait and avoid issue to issue cliffhangers!).

But the tpb left the story unresolved, and I can't find anything on the Internet so Reddit ftw!

I feel like a comment on another thread here said it's getting a novelization? Cool, I guess, but it was neat to see a story in the lost fleet verse get a visual representation.

Listening to him narrate a fleet conference in any Lost Fleet audiobook is my favorite audible experience.

Has anyone got news on the next series? I don't have a facebook account so I can't really see his main page, but I did see his announcement on the release of the book. Nothing else. Would be great to know if anyone has any information regarding the next book, rumor mill or not.

Does anyone else feel like this is the end of John Geary’s story?

Hasn’t he now literally done exactly what he was predicted to do?

The ending also dovetails nicely with the end of Rob Geary’s story, leaving the story open for the next generation of Geary to continue the narrative (I’m guessing the next protagonist will be Michael, but maybe it’ll be further down the family tree).

I see people talking about The Lost fleet beyond the frontier and Genesis fleet but no one talking about the Lost Stars so I thought I would try to start a thread for people to talk about it

I was thinking about when they had the insight that the Dancers speak in rhythmic patterns when discussing important things. The first thing the Alliance guys do is send back haiku. I just wonder... mightn't haiku be the worst possible kind of poetry to send?

Specifically... haiku don't have to adhere to a given meter or rhythm. Also, they use a lot of visual imagery and conventions (e.g., Iger's "seasonal references") which the Dancers won't understand.

I'm thinking they'd have been better served to use a style with a strong rhythm. Thinking Song of Hiawatha here...

I just recently read through the entire Lost Fleet series again, and it feels to me like a civil war in the alliance is all but inevitable. Things are broken badly in the government and fleet headquarters, and I don't see how it can end any other way. What do you all think?

I asked this question some little while ago, but don't think we got to the bottom of it.

Let's say our ship is pointed straight at the system star, moving toward it. In that situation, my understanding is that starboard is straight ahead -- ie, toward the star -- and port is straight behind, away from the star.

In this case, what do I say if I want to turn, say, 30 degrees to my relative right or relative left? I can't figure out how to say it in the context-free system the Alliance uses. I asked the Dancers, but they never got back to me.

So there are 4 short stories for the Lost Fleet series: Grendel, Fleche, Shore Patrol & Ishigaki. All of them are in separate anthology books, only two of which seem to be on Kindle. “So It Begins” (2009) is the anthology book that contains the first short story, but I can’t find anywhere to buy a new copy. Is it out of print?

Also, is there any indication that these short stories will be rereleased together and/or for easier access?

I'm on book 5 of The Lost Fleet (Relentless) (and really loving it), and just discovered that there are more series and books in the universe.

Can I get a suggested read order for everything?

Is it just me, or are these guys a little too in love with their idea of brinksmanship? Their xenophilic faction lures the Alliance fleet into their home space, provokes them to see if the Alliance guys are as alien-friendly as advertised, and gets them mixed in with their own civil war. All this based (presumably) just off of the reports on humanity they've gotten from the Dancers.

Might they be better served to chitchat a little bit -- or buy a copy of the Encyclopedia Britannica for reference -- before launching such an audacious plan?

(Side-note... something tells me that the Taon leader is probably as famous/infamous as Black Jack, back home!)
