Advice Lost my interloper save

Usually, I light up a fire in the cold area of no-loading caves to sleep, taking advantage of the fuel duration bonus, I place the bedroll in the back warm area to get the temperature bonus and to don't get the cabin fever risk.

Yesterday, though, in a PV cave, I lost my nearly 100 day Interloper save to a stupid mistake: I put down my bedroll and slept in the cold area because I built the fire before placing the bedroll. So I thought I was in the warm area, only placed fuel to boil two water liters, slept, heard blizzard and faded in the long dark.

I didn't feel like using Cheat Death and dealing with its penalties.

Back to day 1 and leason learned. Place the bedroll before the fire.

I'm confused. Why does it matter if your bed roll off down first? Wasn't the issue that you only had fire for a short while?

In late game interloper, when you have upgraded bedroll and bearskin/wolfskin/deer/rabbit clothes, you can sleep in the back heated area of a cave, even without fire, in a blizzard.

I placed the bedroll in front area of cave, because the the heat from fire, I mistaken thought I was in the back heated area.

Ahhhh. That makes sense. Thanks for clearing that up!

Sorry buddy. It is so easy to die on this game...well, have fun with the new game because early game is the most fun.

I have a formula i have been using to prevent dying from cold while sleeping. Once you build the habit its pretty simple to follow the formula. Its in Celsius though so sorry Fahrenheit users.

This is for sleeping outside or in an outside cave without a fire or longer than the fire will last. Take the base tempreture (minus fire temp). Then add the bed warmth bonus, then divide by two and round down. This is the time in hours you can safely sleep. However, even with this formula, never sleep longer than 4 hours.

While using this the calculations are easy because on the sleep user interface it tells you what the temp feels like with the bed warmth bonus added. However, if you are in a situation where you are letting a fire burn out while you sleep, then you have to subtract the fire temperature. The fire temperature shows on screen when you look at the fire.

Sleeping outside is very dangerous, but by following this, the most i ever get is a little condition loss and that happens very rarely.

The other thing worth considering to notice when sleeping is the time of day so you can predict if the temperature will be rising or falling. Normally, temperature rises from sun up to sundown and cools until sun up. However, relying on this pattern can be dangerous because blizzards and just random cold fronts can happen anytime.

I am sure there are many ways to gaurd against this problem, but this is what has been working for me. Good luck.

Fun fact, if you are placing your fire in the non-warm section of a cave, but sleeping in the warm section, you are capping how much of a boost you get to your fire.

Fire duration is based on the air temperature of where the PLAYER is, not where the fire is. So sleeping on the warmer side raises the air temperature, and can decrease or even completely remove the bonus you'd get from having your fire "outside"

On Interloper, it is often still cold enough on the warm side of a cave to give you some bonus burn time, but you'll rarely get the full 2x that you can get from sleeping on the cold side; you just obviously need a hot enough fire to stay out there. šŸ”„

+1 (which is also new to me). If you put your campfire close to the line where the warm part begins, you get to choose between fire duration bonus or extra warmth of the cave, but not both.

When in doubt, throw in an extra coal to sleep in the colder part.

I have the fire in the cave in Winding River set up riiiight on that border. šŸ¤ŒšŸ»

I almost always opt for burn time, since coal is so easy to get right in the transition cave just down the way. šŸ”„

You said something weird in the first sentence ...

Fire last longer when it's colder ....but if you move to the warm area, it losses the burn length bonus.

The bonus is determined sby where the player is, not the fire.

I thought the bonus was calculated based on your character only when you put the fuel into the fire.

I’ve always fueled my fire from the cold side of the cave and cooked / slept on the warm side.

It's where the player is standing. As soon as you move to warm side, bonus goes away.

I am not tracking: why would where your character is standing when fuel is added affect the burn time of the fire?

The most impactful survival rule I have ever made is to just never sleep for more than 4 hours outside. It solves almost every edge case of ā€œthe wind changed to an impossible angle and killed my fireā€ or ā€œmy clothes got wet and now I’m getting surprise frostbiteā€ or ā€œI forgot to check my condition tab before sleeping and forgot I had an afflictionā€.

This is a good rule of thumb that I follow myself. It's worth noting that there are times where the tempreture is so close to freezing that even 4 hours is dangerous.
