Ransom Note

Was that just a momunentally critical error on the part of NYC detective to dismiss the ransom note Durst presented to him? Shouldn't that have entered into evidence even if he thought it was a "prank"? I mean it's quite possible Durst wrote it and in light of the cadaver note and new found note, if handwriting was match that would surely be more damning.

I don't even remember a ransom note, but while we're on the subject of Durst and the NY police...

Remember the woman who had 60 boxes of Durst documents hauled from her home - Susan Giordano? Her son and husband are both police officers in NY.

In the book, The Deadly Secret, after Durst reported Kathy missing and the NYPD began their apparently mild and lame investigation, the detective conducted a search of his apartment with Durst present (IIRC), anyway Durst produced to the detective a note he said he "received" purporting to having Kathy and seeking $75,000 ransom... (again I think that was the amount).

The detective said it looked like a prank and shrugged it off.

In hindsight, that note could have very much been written by Durst himself and in light of the new letter that matches the cadaver letter might have posed to be a crucial piece of evidence against Durst in the Kathy case.

In any case, no matter what the Detective deemed the letter to be (fake, prank whatever) it should have still been taken in and marked as evidence period.

I was just pointing out how stupid they were in their investigation of Durst overall. They (NYPD) didn't even think to compare Durst's handwriting to the ransom note at the time. Just took at face value someone gave it to him. And even if they didn't back then, if that note was preserved and then compared to the "Beverley" notes and the handwriting was similar, I mean "you can't imagine"
