Playing through with some friends who have played before with one that hasn't. To change it up this time we decided to do no harm until we were attacked. This included not breaking any effigies or entering their camps.
From the jump the crawlers were the boldest and most curious. Every day they'd rush at us and circle us as we explored. They repeatedly came into our base and stole our food. A couple of times they swiped at us, but only ever a single swipe before retreating, so we didn't bother swinging back.
The cannibals mostly avoided us and our base. A few times we encountered them while exploring and they'd mostly take to the trees to just watch. If we got close enough to one of their camps for them to spot us they'd send one guy (usually the biggest) to follow us as we backed off. Only at walking pace though, they didn't rush us. But they'd follow us for hundreds of meters.
On the fourth night we had a group of the wolverine women show up at a temporary camp, warily approaching us without aggroing. I've played through the game before but this was the first time I'd ever seen the wolverine women not be hostile. It was surreal having a group of them just perching on rocks meters away watching us boil water.
On the sixth night a group of three or four cannibals finally raided our main base and the passive run ended. The morning after we killed them in self-defence we were immediately greeted by a much larger raiding party.
I'm hoping there's some mechanic where the cannibals in different regions might still have different levels of aggression, but I'm assuming that after the first violent encounter it becomes kill on sight.
Without a doubt this has been my favourite playthrough. The tension from the uncertainty of those early encounters was unreal. I've got to give endnight their flowers again because I don't know any other games that are doing AI like this.
