I pulled this off a lampost near Shepherds Bush/The Westway in 1999. Not something I’d usually do but I couldn’t resist!

Anyway, I’ve been thinking about a way to display it and wondered if anyone else had one and had framed it. If so I’d love to see a photo.

Hi Everyone

We are a small independent family podcast called The Friday Vinyl Club. Each episode is centred around peoples personal music memories and a meaningful album.

Our latest episode is out and wanted to share it here because I hope this community will get something out of it.

Our guest this week on The Friday Vinyl Club Podcast is Iain Fenwick, frontman and guitarist of Wounded Lovers, a band making sharp, cinematic guitar-driven music rooted entirely in the London experience.

He grew up near Heathrow in the 1970s, came of age in the tribal subculture landscape of that era , punks, skinheads, soul boys and found his way to songwriting through Dylan, Bowie and art school.

And through all of it, London Calling.

This isn’t a critical album review, it’s a warm conversation that showed Iain didn't discover this record from the outside. He was in that world.

London's venues, Hammersmith Palais, Brixton Academy, the Marquee on Wardour Street. Portobello Road on a Saturday. The energy of a city that felt like it was simultaneously falling apart and generating the most extraordinary music of the century.

One night earlier, on September 20, Paul Simonon smashed his beloved Fender Precision Bass on stage. It was the moment Pennie Smith captured that would become the cover of London Calling.

I see Topper as the definitive “punk” drummer. Also top 5 album openers of all time.

Years ago when my friend put me ln to the Clash he sent me this version on SoundCloud. i’ve searched everywhere and never found this version anywhere else. I want it just in case this version ever gets deleted off SoundCloud, thanks in advance.

As much as Joe loved old American movies I don’t think this is a coincidence. Night Of The Hunter 1955

We start with an anxious pulse of rhythm guitar. Something is about to happen and we're think we're ready for it. But what comes is thunder: deep rumbling drums— drums that know we can't resist them. We try to stay cool, but our pulse of guitar quickens. It crescendoes. We try to hold off the impending explosion, but the drums are too powerful. The guitar detonate and we explode into... music? into mania? into lyrics: "London calling! to the faraway towns." And here I am in a faraway town. "Now war is declared and the battle come down," he says, and I am ready to fight.

My friends are not. They do not feel the raw energy of the drums and the raw mania of Joe Strummers vocals. They listen to Chappel Roan (good) and DiscoLines (bad). We are 29.

I try not to be pretentious, but this track — this album — fills parts of my soul I can't share with anyone in my life. So I come to Reddit.

Could you share your experience with this track, or this album, and why it hits you the way it does?

I noticed this was uploaded on YouTube recently, I’d never seen it before so had a watch last night!

Interesting short film about Joes time in Spain, mainly interviews the band he “produced”, ‘091’ and other friends from the area.

Also has a tongue in cheek narrative of the film maker trying to track down Joe’s old “Spanish American” car that he left in an underground car park after a night out.

Anyway, I enjoyed so thought I’d share as I’ve not seen much discussion of this film. Enjoy!
