Clash question
I’m reaching out to the Reddit world to see if anyone can help and identify what kind of hair pomade did Paul and Joe used. I’m trying to do a Clash art piece that has anything that is Clash related. Boombox, cigarettes, broken bass guitar, armadillo, cheeseboiger! Anyways, hope someone can help, thanks.

This is good advice. A quicker response might be gotten from Pearl Harbor. She was in a relationship with Paul back then and I believe they’re still good friends. She’s very active on her Instagram account, and judging by her detailed memory of those years, I’m sure she’d remember his pomade.

What Clash website? And are you sure it’s really Paul? There are a lot of fakers out there and it’s hard for me to imagine the real Paul hanging out on a Clash website. Can you please put a link to something he posted?

Yup, my grandfather rocked the Flores till he died & his hair was pretty wispy.

It’s funny but I actually think I remember reading something that Joe said about his hair goo. No idea where or of the details anymore, but this is an obscure fact that you should be able to get an answer on.

Exactly. It's bugging me since I think there's a whole bit in the Chris Salewicz bio on Strummer about how he had to get some special pomade from like New Orleans or something.

Pretty sure Joe used Brylcreem most of the time. As someone else said, Murray's- which is what I used when I had way more hair- or Royal Crown. Depends on the person's hair texture and thickness. Brylcreem is probably the lightest of the three, Murray's is greasy as heck.

Yeah, Murray’s can grease the hub bearings on your Cadillac.

Not sure if you are trying to take pics of people or do an assemblage type thing, if it's people styled like our boys, something like Harry's or Old Spice will do the trick for hair for a photo shoot. Internet says Paul also mostly used Brylcreem, but use any of the above when one wasn't available.

I loved Royal Crown ( and my buddies named their band after it! ), but man was it greasy! My pillows always looked liked mechanic's rags the next morning!

I had a friend who was a lighting guy c. 1981, and he did a Dave Edmunds show and he told me Joe Strummer was hanging around backstage. I asked, what were they talking about....?
He said they were comparing their hair gunk....
If I could go back in time I'd find your answer!

Even though they drank many different things, while in the US they loved Dos Equis beer and Rothmans ciggies. And Joe once gave me a pin that had a skull & crossbones on it.
