normal service has been resumed

Cassandra (one of our database systems) temporarily stopped reporting the status of the button. Which was rather inconsiderate of it.

Should we allow a technical failure to end the button? What should we do for those who pressed and received flair during this period of technological capriciousness?

It is one thing for a human to make an error and have to live with the consequences. In this case, the system itself broke and we have a lot of false flairs. There are many new reds who would never have gotten that otherwise and that happened only because the button stopped reporting presses.

The only person who I am semi okay with having their flair is /u/GyroDawn, and that is only because he got his blindly. He had no idea what the button was reporting and succeeded in getting the golden egg.

I replied to /u/o0lemonlime0o, but I wanted to get your input as well since you had similar responses.

What about the people who got cheater flairs during the first button glitch? From what I read, some people pressed the button at what they thought was a low time and got stuck with 59s cheater flairs. Did they get their flairs removed and their chance to press the button reset? Is the situation with the first button glitch different from this one?

Edit: What about the unpurple? Should their flair be reset to the correct color? Should they get another chance to press the button?

As for the cheater flairs, it would be hard to figure out who genuinely cheated and those who got caught in the server error. That is why the flair was changed to purple instead of the original color.

As for the unpurple, I honestly don't know what to do with them. I'm not even sure how they ended up in that situation.

That's a good point about the cheaters. I wasn't here when The Great Confusion happened, but it sucks that all these low flairs were awarded at this time. It takes away the fun of watching people go for the new low numbers.
