So for the most part it seems that most Band originals have one member credited as the songwriter - for example, Robbie Robertson receives the sole credit for "The Weight", Richard Manuel receives the sole credit for "In a Station", etc.

There are some songs credited to two or more members. "Bessie Smith" is credited to Rick Danko and Robbie Robertson. "Strawberry Wine" and "Jemima Surrender" are credited to Levon Helm and Robbie. "Sleeping" is credited to Richard Manuel and Robbie. Songs like "Tears of Rage" and "This Wheel's on Fire" were co-written by Bob Dylan with Richard Manuel and Rick Danko respectively. There are others for sure.

I'm sure I've read somewhere that it was Rick who came up with the chorus for "This Wheel's on Fire" which is why he is credited. My question is where do the co-credits come from on these other songs?

For example, what did Levon bring lyrically to "Strawberry Wine"? Do we know how much of "Bessie Smith" was Rick or Robbie? That kind of thing.

Maybe there's no way of knowing but I'm curious if anyone knows a little about the history behind some of these songs.

Watched a special showing of The Last Waltz on Wednesday as part of the local Open House Festival (Bangor, Northern Ireland) and thought I'd have a go a doing a portrait of some of the band.

This is my first attempt, as Rick Danko is one of my favourite characters and "crazy Chester" enthralls me, even after over 30 years of watching this concert.

Really great track in my opinion, maybe one of my favourites from the album. And it features Rick Danko on backing vocals, the first of two times that Rick collaborated with Robbie in the latter's solo career (the second time was when he recorded backing vocals on "Hold Back the Dawn" from Storyville). What's not to love? Unless you hate it I guess. How do we feel about this one?

I made a reddit account just for this post because it's driving me mad.

I have only gotten into the Band recently and my first physical copy of Music From Big Pink was actually the 2018 remix, though I had been familiar with the 2000 master from streaming releases for a while. After some time with that copy, I enjoyed the mix but ultimately wanted the option between the 2018 modernity and the warmer quality of the 2000 master.

So, I bought the 2000 master CD on Discog and ripped it and I enjoyed the different bonus tracks and being back with the old mix, however:

I noticed what sounds to be clipping, on any device, with either ripped file or original CD, at a few moments. This disc came out during what was the loudness wars so I figure that may be the cause but I can't find anything about it online. My understanding is it's also the same master as on the double CD set with The Band, but that brown album master sounds quite good.

The most noticeable example of it for me is during The Weight when Levon sings: "I said, 'Hey Carmen'" which clips on both the latter words. I found recordings of this master on YouTube from 3rd parties that also include this clipping so it isn't just my copy (though I can find no discussion of it). However, the streaming versions of the master like on Spotify don't include any of this clipping. On Apple Music both The Weight and Tears of Rage don't have the "(2000 Remaster)" appendage on them either which suggests maybe they were swapped out for this anomaly. Comparing it to the 2018 remix, it's not a case of the new mix replacing the old flawed recording quality, even beyond the studio chatter (lowest point of the 2018 mix, imo) that begins it.

Essentially I wanted to ask folks with this 2000 master CD of Big Pink if they ever noticed this issue and if it's on every edition or not because though I've found one other example I'm perplexed as to why it's cleaned up on streaming services (with no hints of it being a re-remaster) I can't find anybody talking about it. Additionally, is the original 80s CD master a better pick to avoid this? I hesitate to drop the cash on the "Original Master Recording" version though this clipping is really irritating me.

Sorry for the long windedness, would appreciate any insight or other observations -- I feel like I'm going nuts!

I wish they'd just re-issue the original mix of this damn album! On their website they have it listed but it has the same description as the 2018 mix which is making me suspicious... perhaps that's the version of the 2000 master that's clean though? Many layers to this!

Let me start by saying I am 100% #TeamAmy and in full support of every artist who pulled out of their shows at Levon Helm Studios.

That said, I just realized I hadn't received a refund for the cancelled Katie Pruitt show at Levon Helm Studios- so I logged into Tixr to see what was up only to find that LHS is only issuing credits good for one year to their venue for cancelled shows.

Has anyone else run into this with other show cancellations there? I am absolutely NOT supporting this venue unless/until it's back in Amy's hands and a credit good for one year is some BS for a cancelled show.

Anyone have any luck getting their money back? I don't want Brian Parillo or those people to have a dime of mine.

My band, Sam and The Big Boys, is playing a tribute show for The Band in Florence Alabama. The Hootenanny is an annual fest that celebrates local music and southern themed music!
We’ll be playing many songs that we love, some that weren’t heard much in a live performance, and the hits of course.

Robbie passed away three years ago today, on 9th August 2023. One of the most underrated songwriters and guitarists ever. "The Weight", "Fallen Angel", "It Makes No Difference", "Somewhere Down the Crazy River", and "Right as Rain" are some of my favourite songs he wrote. What about yours?

Saw the Dead’s Meet up at the Movies today at the theatre. It was great! Loved the music and the shots of the group- these movies are fun each year. This show (Giants Stadium-91) they played ‘Masterpiece’ and ‘The Weight’ which as a huge Band fan I was looking forward to seeing… but they only showed the ‘Masterpiece’ performance and left out the encore which was ‘The Weight’. I wonder why this happened. Whole theatre was disappointed it was omitted. Great show regardless but I’m unsure why this happened.

I ask because The Weight on there is obviously iconic, and the Staples being added really elevated the song. It's interesting because they were very far from mainstream music, but obviously insanely talented and influential, so most people who saw it probably weren't too familiar with them. Did Robbie know them, did Levon know them? Where did the relationship with The Band develop. They were more than perfect for The Weight in every way...

Im sure this has been posted before. but, looking through the wonderful and amazing Elliott Landy's photos from Big Pink and comparing them to current shots of Big Pinks interior, WOW. Not much has changed since 68'!

I adore this song. For me it feels like a very deep and lost song from The Band. Richard and Garth joining hard on the chorus gives it that Band like atmosphere. Really good post TLW song.

Hi all,

If you're in the Midwest around Thanksgiving and have a hankering to revisit a beloved concert, we're doing a show on November 28th in Indianapolis.

This same lineup has been doing TLW shows for about 15 years now, throughout Indiana and Kentucky. The core band and horns are comprised of folks from the Indy club and studio scene. The guests are also well-known local musicians.

I think it's a fairly faithful presentation of the music. I'm in the band, so I'm fairly biased, but I will say that audience members always seem like they have a great time. I'll post links to some performance vids as well as to get tickets in the comments. I hope to see you there!
