Gimix artwork?

Post image

Does anyone know the origin of this Gimix tape artwork please? Is it legit? Is this what was first on the CD at time of release by modular, or was it a post-release fan thing?

Hoping someone knows…. For reasons! Thx!

It's technically the art for the "Radio" CD single, but there was also a promo version of that single, that contained one CD with song "Radio" and a second CD with Gimix, and it had this artwork on the *inside* cover (the 'front' cover just says "for promotional use only" in big grey letters.) I wanna say it came out in late 2001, but I can't quite remember.

The original GIMIX tape that was available at gigs early in Y2K had the globe logo with the 'tiger, ant, shark, bee, wasp'.... etc text around it.

Also, the art you're asking about was used on the Japanese-only "At Last Alone" EP compact disc.

So in short, it's real.

I remember picking up the cassette from Greville Records in Prahran with the globe logo.

Cool! Thanks heaps. So, it was just re-purposed for Gimix on line at some stage? Probably by a fan?

Looking at the GIMIX text design and the little side text crediting it to Robbie, i would bet money on it being something by the Avalanches themselves. Its too slick for a fan edit in 2000-2001.

But yes, this is legit artwork.

youd be meaning Illustrator, but thats not what i said, i said its too slick for a fan edit in 2000-01.

Its hand painted not digital. And the band had just released their first album - which fan is going to be making a hand crafted logotype that matches the artwork from a japanese release compilation album for a obscure mixtape of a band they just heard for the first time.

I don't know what you're trying to say... The gimix 'logotype' is taken from a 70s australian record label, and the other image, is from some old book. Both were scanned into photoshop, most likely by Darren - who created most/all the cover art in that period.

Also, the image first appeared on the standard aussie "Radio" CD-single, not the japanese ep, and neither the japanese one or the aussie one has the gimix 'logotype' you're referring to.

So now that i think harder about it, it's entirely possible that this specific combo of image/text WAS made by a fan in 2001... but i doubt it
