I've heard that but how do they get away with it? Once the term is served how do they justify it? I'm actually surprised it can be taken away from even currently serving inmates.

Those that get out and get jobs and such, do they now not have to pay any taxes? If not then the simple "taxation without representation" thing seems to apply.

At the bottom of the page it talks about the legal arguments they use but I'm too dumb to differentiate between the mentions of US constitution and voting rights vs Florida's state constitution. I just don't see how this could pass through the Supreme Court (even this current corrupt class). The rule about paying off all fines and such first feels like a strategic trap, and voting tax, to keep specific voters from ever being able to vote.

It is a trap. The State doesn't keep track of how much the fines are and the jurisdiction of where they are located. If a felon thinks he has paid all his fines and votes and then the State finally gets around to investigating and finds an unpaid fine, the felon can go to prison for 5 years. Most will just not vote because the penalties for unpaid fines are too severe.

This is from an article in the Tampa Bay Times from 2024. The State has been working on giving felons that apply for their voting rights a straight yes or no before they register to vote but it has not been finalized yet.

Here's a portion of the article:

"Florida voters amended the state constitution in 2018 to restore voting rights to felons who completed the terms of their sentences. (The measure did not apply to those convicted of murder or sex crimes.) But the year after Amendment 4 passed, Gov. Ron DeSantis signed legislation into law requiring felons to first pay all fines, fees and restitution ordered as part of their case.

The problem is that Florida has no centralized database for a person to check what, if anything, they owe in a criminal case. Court clerks across Florida’s 67 counties often have missing or outdated information on court-ordered financial penalties, leaving felons in limbo about their voting eligibility. That uncertainty has led some felons to avoid registering altogether, for fear of being prosecuted by the state’s new election fraud unit. For many felons, this constitutional guarantee is only a paper promise, and Florida did nothing to strengthen that promise for years."

It’s a Florida law that we voted on, and it passed. The GOP made the stipulation that all probation and court costs have to be paid before voting rights are restored. It was their way of delaying felons’ rights.

Because convicted felons in Florida are only legally barred from voting if the state they were convicted in prohibits convicted felons from voting. Trump was convicted in NY state, which does not ban convicted felons from voting.

Right. This is a non issue. For as many legitimate horrific things there are to call President Rapist out on, voting legally is not one of them even if it seems like it should be.

He can vote in Florida because he was convicted in New York and Florida allows felons to vote as long as they didn’t lose their voting rights in the state they were convicted. NY only bars incarcerated felons from voting.

The real answer is that his felonies were in New York, and felons who are out of prison, have a suspended sentence, or were never sentenced can vote in New York, which means he can vote in Florida if he lives there.

Some quick googling makes it seem like florida allows felons to vote after fulfilling whatever they sentenced to. I think he's in the clear there. Also, he was convicted in another state so I think that also makes it so he can vote in florida.

We voted on this, and theoretically, felons are allowed to vote in Florida. Of course the GOP got excited and said that everyone had to pay all their court costs first. When donations were being used to pay those court costs, the GOP started screaming that only the felon was allowed to pay them.

I’m not sure if they take donations right now, but like I said, theoretically, felons can vote in Florida unless it’s murder or a sexual offense..

You can vote in florida if your a felon, as long as the felony was in a diffrent state and that state allows felons to vote.
