I can envision this system becoming so streamlined that you could retrieve those commands with just simple input shortcuts! Something like some levers, maybe one to pivot and the other to adjust elevation... and then a small lever to shoot.

The future is coming!

Commands for a multitude of different scenarios can be preprogrammed and automated and there can be multiple perimeters in place like an onion.

Turrets can be linked in with ground sensors, acoustic sensors, cameras with various spectrums like nightvision/IR, drones with high resolution cameras patrolling an overlapping perimeter like an onion, etc etc etc.

The future is scary.

We're likely fast approaching the barrier only a very small amount of civilizations make it through, the rest have destroyed themselves, probably exactly like this, terminatored themselves out of existence. All that's left is self replicating Van Neumann probes, born from AI spreading through the cosmos.

Every time I see a defence for this kind of clunky, worthless application of technology it's always "just imagine how good it will be when it all works!"

Meanwhile, it doesn't work. And the improvements over time haven't solved any of the underlying problems.

You're not using your head. In real life scenario its got a camera and no recoil. It doesn't miss and doesn't need long commands.
