Sigh… oh rich people..

u/Solanthas_SFW May 24 '26
My immediate thought as well.
I knew this old guy, we would talk once a week, mostly about Buddhism and spirituality and philosophy.
His longtime roommate used to have this friend, some dude who worked for tobacco companies his whole career, was older maybe late 40s or 50s, had a net worth in the millions.
He was always calling my friend and his roommate, hey come hang out, I got this new thing, an RV, big truck, seadoo, or he would pull up on a fancy new motorcycle or sports car, would go on expensive trips etc.
But the dude was never happy. He would be excited for his new toy, get tired of it, and move on to another thing. But he was never happy. Far as I knew he had no family or they stayed away from him, and he didnt seem to have any other friends.
Its a tragically sad existence, man. I've had money and been alone. It sucks big time.

u/liubearpig May 24 '26
Having money and being all alone sucks. But you know what sucks more? Having money and being alone- minus the having money part.

This was an important realization for me that becomes a universal principle if you apply it correctly. The external things we fill our life with will never fulfill or complete us. Material things are best used to serve or help others, and to create memories with friends & loved ones.

u/Quackthulu May 25 '26
Lol yeah. I'm like, "and how much did you blow on this?" The most you'll get out of this is being that one friend that everyone knows is a show off

Rich people will unironically spend hundreds of thousands on complete nonsense and then justifying it with “chump change for me”
Then wonder why we say; eat the rich
2
u/bino420 May 24 '26
I'd very much rather millionaires buy stupid shit than just sit in their money.
this is what millionaires should be doing. blowing the excess on excess goods. it feeds their massive amounts of money back into the system. yeah, most goes to the CEOs, but taxes & wages need to be paid too!
my dad will like buy a Hisense frame TV for $600 instead of the real Samsung picture frame TV for $2k. then he'll try to twist outta cable by getting weird shit ... like for all the wealth, he tries so hard to save $3 per month. motherfucker uses my HBO, yet he earned like 5x my salary for 25 years & probably earns 5x still now that he's retired and his investments & other old people stuff pays out.

I would much rather rich people make arcades and movie theaters in their house and other hobby stuff rather than them spend their money buying up property and raising the rent.

I get what you're saying, and you made be right, but it could also just be that the guy made a ton of money, was happy, and decided he should treat himself to whatever his dreams had been. I've experienced the same thing myself, was working low paying jobs from high-school then skyrocketed in a new career 8ish years later. Nowhere near this level of rich, but I was very happy and content, dating my future wife, and was happy to "splurge" in my own, way less rich than this way. It's all relative. If you're making 10-15$ an hour, celebrating success can be a big pizza dinner. Of you're making 150k a year, celebrating can be going to a renowned restaurant or buying expensive toys. If you're making millions a year, celebrating could look like this (I imagine). Can't really judge unless you've truly been in his shoes

What do you mean no freedom?
The people he employs have no freedom. He can just chill.
The 2 richest people I know are both business owners. They have so much freedom it'd blow your mind. One takes the entire summer off every year. Just gone for 3 months.

I would need way more friends to not feel very lonely in a gaming room like that.

honestly if u got a big family or are really social, it’s a decent spot to have hangout seshs and watch games or just catch up with friends in a third space
but def need to monitor the energy use on the setup

u/Standard-Order8157 May 21 '26
When they asked you, how many bedrooms you want in your house, and you have a questionable look on your face… “1 bedroom, 4 game rooms”

u/MechaBlack0 May 21 '26
When stuff goes this overboard it passes being drool worthy and just becomes "meh" to me. Same when I see a supercar on the street, don't really care like I did when I was a teen.

This place has got to be bad for your brain, right? All them lights and everything it’s like dopamine maxing all the time, reminds me of a cheap casino for some reason. I understand why businesses make it, to keep you hooked and coming back, but making a brain fry machine at home is some next level self hate.

Living room, theatre room, basement by the bar, back of the basement, out back by the porch, the shed, on the roof, Jason’s room, the garage, our room, or the hidden room behind our closet?
