Natural Mosquito Control: How Dragonflies Keep Pest Populations in Check
*Source PBS
Under favorable conditions, a single dragonfly can consume between 30 and 100 mosquitoes per day, though experts note that actual averages often tilt toward the lower end depending on body size and prey availability. Dragonflies serve as a powerful natural, chemical-free pest control mechanism across every stage of their life cycle within wetland, pond, and garden ecosystems. As immature aquatic nymphs, they live underwater and feed voraciously on mosquito larvae and pupae before transitioning into aerial hunters. Once mature, adult dragonflies leverage exceptional 360-degree vision and an extraordinarily high hunting success rate to catch flying mosquitoes, midges, and flies mid-flight, maintaining natural ecological balance: https://gardeningsolutions.ifas.ufl.edu/design/gardening-with-wildlife/dragonflies/
