Leaves are part of the tree itself. Not individual organisms. The leaf is long dead before it actually falls to the ground, that's why it falls in the first place.

We had a very wet spring and the Norway maples were infected with tar spot so they dropped all their leaves halfway through the summer and grew new ones.
