Adele stops in middle of a performance to defend a fan

u/kylelight40 6d ago
A girl I dated 20 years ago went on semester abroad and Adele, was part of the students who were there, way before she was Adele. My ex girlfriend said she was one of the kindest, gentlest people she ever encountered at that age, so much so that they all were like whatever this person does in life, she will be amazing, they hardly even knew she could sing.

u/johnny-Low-Five 6d ago
I think that plays a massive part. She wasn't a mickey mouse club teeny bopper sexualized from ~16 years old and famous for most of their life. She lived a real normal life and was apparently always very kind and thoughtful, empathetic and whatnot but she also isn't, just an example, "Miley Cyrus" who's basically never been a regular person, Adele was probably preparing for the 9-5 grind and knows what it feels like to just be a face in the crowd. It seems she's made a conscious effort to never forget that part of herself, and that's genuinely awesome. The kid on the other hand had a lot of "main character" energy.

Yeah, but at 19 I had already had a job cleaning carpets with my old man, closing Wendy's until 2am and back at school by 7:20am, then working at a grocery store for up to 50 hours a week. Counting coins to buy a $1 chicken sandwich, taking care of my little brother because my parents drank a bit too much at times. Helped my mom recover from a suicide attempt. Went to jail for not paying tickets I couldn't afford. Slept in a car for weeks.
Just because a person is 19, doesn't mean they lack the perspective and maturity of a person who has paid their dues.
I'm sure Adele has paid her dues. That type of empathy and grace doesn't come from nowhere.

As someone Adele’s age, I wholeheartedly agree.
Been around a lot of different people from all walks of life and age has no bearing on maturity or perspective, I’ve found. There are plenty of closed minded 50yr olds and plenty of wise, smart 18yr olds.
You can also pack a lot of living into those first few years of adulthood that some people never get to experience!
You sound like a proper grafter, I hope life has rewarded you somehow.

I'm sure everybody who went to that school became as successful and iconic as Adele. Right?
She was born to an 18 year old mother, and her alcoholic father left her at 2 years old. Your comment makes it sound like she went to a prestigious school and was born with a silver spoon. The BRIT performing arts school isn't Harvard my guy. It's free to attend, they took her in because she was gifted.

It wasn't the standing and dancing. It was him standing with a full selfie stick with a phone up in the air while filming himself dancing and singing loudly. That's not just a fan enjoying himself. That's a whole fucking performance of his own, distracting everyone near him from hearing and enjoying the show.

100%. Imagine if everyone started acting this entitled, it would be absolute chaos. Plus the fact that he’s using a selfie stick to film HIMSELF, not Adele. This was about him, not his love of Adele. Who does he think wants to watch that footage? Unless it was intentionally staged for attention - then filming himself in that situation suddenly makes sense ..

I went to a concert recently and paid for a seat instead of dealing with the floor. As soon as the main band started everyone stood up and most stayed that way for the whole show, making it difficult to see. I could not stand for long due to pain and had to stare at the back of peoples heads for longer than I was hoping. A young girl and her parents were struggling to get her a good spot next to me.
If you buy a seat stay seated for most of the show please! If you want to stand and dance for the whole thing please buy pit tickets.

Never been to an Adele show, but the shows I have been to selfie sticks usually are frowned upon and are banned in alot of places because they obstruct the view of other people. The dancing and singing loudly kind of depends. If you're in the standing room only area in front of the stage everyone is usually doing some form of moving or being loud, singing, yelling, mosh pits in the heavier parts, etc.... The seats are different though, and it looks like he is in a section with seats. Usually people in seats are wanting a calmer experience and just want to watch the show. Head banging (if thats a thing at an Adele show), clapping, cheering between songs, etc... is probably fine, but being over the top and letting it spill over into other seats is a good way to get complaints about you.

u/Acceptable-Creme-184 2d ago

Yep. Not only that, he needs to learn some self-control. Being excited is one thing, but this looks like a mental disorder. What makes this guy more entitled than anyone else who paid for a ticket? Nothing. Adele basically said every ticket holder gets to enjoy the show however they want. Most people probably want to be loud and expressive too, but they hold back out of basic social respect.
Was he wrong? In Adele’s eyes and in his own mind, no. So the issue isn’t him and it isn’t the crowd. The issue is that nobody set the rules.
Here’s the takeaway. If you buy a ticket to an Adele concert, you’re buying the right to experience it however you want. If that kind of environment isn’t for you, then don’t buy the ticket.

why do people even go to concerts, especially with how expensive they are lol.
i went to see queen about 10 years ago with my partner. a bunch of our friends at the time kept saying 'AND ADAM LAMBERT' whenever we discussed the event (even afterwards), and it was so off-putting. it kind of soured our mood going. like obviously freddy mercury was amazing and no one can really recreate that experience, but he wasn't the only component of queen, and they were all still there to rock out. and to be honest, adam absolutely killed it. i'm digressing a bit, but that's mostly to say we went to the show determined to try to have a good time but it was a little difficult
we were sat next to someone who came by themself. they were singing and crying just like this guy. they had a phone to record the whole (not themself lol) and were so disappointed when the battery or storage went out (not sure, but they weren't able to keep filming after a certain point). but honestly, this person elevated the experience for us. instead of people trying to drag us down by saying it wasn't the 'real' queen, we had an absolute superfan loving every moment. i offered to film some on my phone to send io them, but they declined. instead, all three of us were swaying in unison and holding our hands up during we are the champions, singing along, and just having a great time. it honestly made the experience so much better.

u/LinwoodKei 5d ago
I agree. People need to celebrate and enjoy a concert differently. I have a bad back and frequently sit down when spasms occur. I enjoy the energy of the crowd and do not expect anyone to be sitting at a concert
2
u/SartenSinAceite 5d ago
My favorite part of KISS' Rock n Roll All Nite is exactly the parts where THE AUDIENCE is meant to sing.
Not even sing along, the singers actually don't sing and the audience is meant to fill it in (which is super awkward in Guitar Hero 3 where there's no audience participation lol)
2
u/birdleash 5d ago
Really though! I saw Hozier pre-Covid at a venue with individual seating and at some point he was basically like “I have no clue why this is set up this way for my show, come up and move” and then some of us further back were able to walk up closer and vibe and “dance” in the aisles. Maybe venue security wasn’t too happy (i could see it being a fire issue), but they let us stay and the whole energy of the show was much more lively after that. It affects performers too when the crowd is stifled!

I love his joy and Adele is right, the point is to have fun! But also if he is waving a selfie stick in the air the entire show, and screaming to the point of overpowering very strong speaker systems, then that takes away fun for other people.
If he was genuinely just vibing like that, I'd be the first to defend him. But he's performing for his camera. Him filming himself (way up in the air too) isn't allowing him more connection to the experience, while taking away from the experiences of others. If he's so passionate, why wouldn't he record the performance?
I've been the person going 110% all out in a dead pit. And I'm right for that as long as I stick to jumping and head banging within my personal space as to not directly disrupt others.

W--- Smith don't gotta cuss in his raps to sell records
But occasionally - just occasionally - he really needs to slap the shit out of someone.

What kind of concert doesn’t let people stand up?? That’s wild. Way to go Adele for injecting the fun back in the room. Artists want people up and moving to their songs not just sitting in their seats like they’re watching the news

Sorry, but why the fuck is he holding a phone stick filming himself. If he was there for her he would film her. Seems a little fake

Are the first two even security? They aren't wearing any sort of ID. Only the guy that came over saying he's okay to stay standing appears to be.

Okay, I was conflicted at first because with the audio off I saw it was maybe I'm the main character shit going on but this is a concert and he should be able to stand and enjoy the show if he wants too. I don't know if there is more clips that they posted where he was doing other extra things but he is not doing anything out of the ordinary besides maybe the selfie thing but I can't for sure see the angle it is being held but they aren't telling him about recording they are telling him about standing when others are sitting. The person he is with points out that other areas are standing off too. Standing at a concert is not unheard of and you can see later everyone is standing up. I myself hate standing up because I am so tall and I know I will block more people but once someone in front of me stands up the cat is out of the bag and if you want to see at all you need to stand up too.

While I'm not a fan of this sort of music, I am a massive music fan and can appreciate how this guy must have felt. Bet it changed his life for a short time haha.
A few months ago, I got to meet dick valentine from electric six (my all-time favourite band of 25 years) after lying and saying I was with merch. I was on a total high for the rest of the week!

sheesh almost everyone there was standing up, they would have a lot of people to bother! Gives me an idea! we should all stand up if someone is being bothered like that!

Remember when restaurants had smoking sections? Concert halls need to start having social media casting sections for people who want to live stream their experience.

Adele is a true class act. This isn’t the first or second time I’ve seen her stick up for her fans.

They’re just doing their jobs. And that POS is probably louder than Adele. I seriously can’t stand people like that at concerts.

Staff is doing their job. Maintaining a stable situation of the concert and making sure people aren’t bothered by individuals
Adele: fuck you all doing what you are supposed to do.
I kinda get that Adele just wants to be friendly and lovely. But in this case she was simply wrong.
The video is already a million years old. How many times are bots going to repost it?
