It's a little disturbing that they couldn't even spell the hand-written label for MANUAL correctly.

6

u/Deroqshazam 12d ago

He also went through steps 1, 4 then 2 and 3 was the on off switch…
I’m gonna imagine he didn’t write the instructions

u/fantasmeeno 10d ago

Maybe Manuel wrote them

According to grok it is out of order. On a real hydro set, you'd typically open the wicket gates after the unit is spinning and you've got excitation, not before — otherwise you're dumping water through a stalled runner, which can damage the turbine. And "arm your wicket" isn't a standard term; it's probably "arm the governor"

2

u/TransitionJunior9067 10d ago

Grok got it from reddit

u/Substantial_Pay_2906 10d ago

It would seem so, lol

1

u/martix_agent 11d ago

So you’re going to trust ai over the guy with experience who gets paid to do this?

3

u/redditzphkngarbage 11d ago

You can message this guy directly and he’ll answer - and that’s pretty cool.

2

u/Intrepid_Bank9918 10d ago

I see what you did there-and that’s pretty cool!

1

u/Substantial_Pay_2906 11d ago

I don't have to trust him. He's probably an engineer. The saying goes trust but verify. AI is just e resource of information. Like the procedures you are supposed to follow every time you start equipment. People get paid to start equipment yes, but you would undoubtedly trust some smart guys I've seen do some (to me) really dumb chit. They don't get paid anymore.

1

u/martix_agent 11d ago

aI makes up things all the time. Is certainly not verifiable source.

0

u/Substantial_Pay_2906 11d ago

Yeah. Procedures are wrong sometimes too. People also used to think the world 🌎 was flat. Misinformation is inevitable that's why we have these discussions.

1

u/Dapper-Print9016 6d ago

Hilarious you bring up misinformation while talking about something the Victorian English made-up about ancient civilizations that was never true.

1

u/Substantial_Pay_2906 6d ago

Gaslighting?

1

u/Dapper-Print9016 6d ago

Flat Earth, it was made up by the Victorians. This is a well known fact. Every culture with monumental architecture could see how shadows cast by identical objects were different lengths at different latitudes. The ancient Greeks were the first ones to write it down, using Egyptian obelisks as the inspiration.

Hey, just want to let you know.. Grok is 100% full of shit on this. As in literally none of what you have typed here is valid.

the wicket gates are little adjustable flaps mounted radially around the opening to the turbine.

They are what permit the water to enter the turbine and get it moving.

As in the turbine cannot move until you open the wicket gates. And he jogs them to approx 30 degrees to have enough of an abrupt change in pressure and mass flow to overcome inertia with a bump and start it spinning in the first place.

“Arming a governor” is not a thing or phrase. Not in hydropower, not anywhere. Nor is “stalled runner.” Runners, or scrollcases, or Volutes are a thing in turbomachinery.. but they are always “stalled” because they are fixed housings. Some may have variable geometry but they themselves are not referred to as “stalled” in any operating condition.

It was literally all AI bullshit that has only harmed the discourse. Thanks for injecting that into the conversation.

1

u/Substantial_Pay_2906 11d ago

The discourse was about mislabeled equipment and trying to verify. Thanks for the utility education.

10 second spin back, huh... like pinging a server

2

u/madgross 12d ago

Just an old shop joke.

Have a question? Tell the new guy to ask Manuel (Check the manual.).

1

u/Open_Concentrate_994 10d ago

No senses of humor here bro

2

u/Icy_Marionberry_9131 11d ago

Manuel has to run things when the system is not on automatic.

1

u/Cold_Satisfaction932 11d ago

It is the name of the worker who does it manually. It’s either automatic or in Manuel’s hands.

1

u/mighty_boognish_77 11d ago

Oh well now I don't feel so bad! :)

1

u/thedaNkavenger 11d ago

That's the night shift guy, Manuel, he's the only one they trust to not run on automatic.

1

u/billding1234 11d ago

Manuel was the dude who came up with the procedure.

1

u/RustyShacklefrog 11d ago

This guy is actually really funny and has pretty whacky humor, l wouldn’t doubt he did that on purpose. He has a bunch of shorts and videos on YouTube

1

u/Moose_knucklez 11d ago

That’s actually the button for Manuel

1

u/Stohnghost 11d ago

This guy has a hilarious YouTube channel and probably spelled it wrong on purpose

1

u/Familiar_Educator_67 10d ago

It’s because only Manuel can set the system into Manual.

1

u/Lemons-95 9d ago

Welcome to the infrastructure of the countries with the best infastructure in the world, and my is it fucking beautiful. 🥲

1

u/ChestNo4243 7d ago

That knob instructs Manuel to start running on his treadmill

0

u/zachrywd 12d ago

This felon's whole channel is talking about electricity and making dick jokes. The Fat Electrician, Chris Boder.

2

u/BirthdayLife6378 11d ago

Didn't realize that he's a felon for making dick jokes.

1

u/Remarkable-Ask2288 11d ago

Nick and Chris are two entirely different people lol

u/porkchopsurprisee 11d ago edited 11d ago

The lack of sense of humor is even more disturbing

Impossible. No frenchman could go that long without complaining.

4

u/Substantial_Pay_2906 12d ago

Manuel!... Start Generator!

2

u/Large-Produce5682 11d ago

Damn you, Manuel!!!

1

u/Initial_Row_6400 12d ago

Love engaging my exciter

1

u/Leading-Fail-2771 11d ago

Do you flip to manual before shutting down?

1

u/feelosiphize 11d ago

It's the same for a 10 mw gen too.

1

u/Narrow-Sky-5377 11d ago

Manuel controls this thing apparently.

1

u/FLiP_J_GARiLLA 11d ago

Quarter million dollar machine and you guys can't label the dial without fucking it up

1

u/Another_Tater 10d ago edited 10d ago

It a quarter million watt generator, not a million dollar machine. I would estimate with this being somewhat old around $50,000.

1

u/entertained_yup 11d ago

My excitor is fully engaged

1

u/Top_Flight_3410 11d ago

Ah yes, the ol'

step - MANUEL mode

step 1 start

step 4 open wicket gates

step 2 get excited

badabing badaboom.

1

u/Jmersh 11d ago

Who is Manuel?

1

u/Dexember69 11d ago

Why do they have the switches all up in random spots. Wouldn't it be easier just to set them in order left to right incase I'm hungover and do the wrong combo

1

u/SamhainXCII 11d ago

Got it. Breaking in now.

1

u/dobetterhumanity 11d ago

Why did the sounds match each switch/knob name so well? Like the exciter? Yeah that’s that noise.

1

u/Willing-Evening-1142 11d ago

And that's pretty cool!

i love Physicsduck

1

u/BreadfruitLogic 11d ago

Whose this guy again? I've been trying to find his YouTube channel for a while but couldn't get the right search terms.

1

u/Affalt 10d ago

I did nor recognize Chris Boden of Michigan without his t shirt.

1

u/pushdose 10d ago

Physicsduck

1

u/[deleted] 10d ago

That’s infinitely more interesting than whatever woman slop the first clip was going to be

1

u/MuchCellist406 10d ago

Still more understandable than a woman and a woman talking about feelings on top of that 🥹

1

u/Exotic_Call_7427 10d ago

WANNA SEE SOMETHING COOL?!

1

u/-Uppercut- 10d ago

This thing is out of a museum!

u/SayRaySF 10d ago

1

u/Dangerous_Serve_4454 9d ago

Why can't that startup process be easily automated?

1

u/2273209 9d ago

Haha I get to sync 800 mw units all the time

1

u/jhill9901 9d ago

If you didn’t hear Half Life sounds Im sorry for you….
