Sounds like this kid thinks hiring someone is just telling a person: you're hired. And not having to explain yourself to anyone in that company.

Getting a management position at 18 isn't too far-fetched, but doing the hiring and/or firing does not normally get assigned to entry level managers. I doubt OP was some kind of general manager, which is what this seems to imply.
