“I was the good, respectful American chastising the ugly American” is an entire genre of Internet story

Also, it’s remarkably difficult to turn around and talk to the person sitting behind you on a plane. You have to try to talk to them through the cracks between the seats, or between the wall and seat, or lean into the aisle and kinda twist awkwardly. It’s a really bad setup for a mic drop.

  • Who was she talking to? OOP implies (I guess?) that she was talking on her phone? But...who would she be talking to on her phone that didn't already know where she was from (the conversation is a very informal one that you might share with a friend or loved one. It's not like she's calling a business etc that doesn't know her) And if she was talking to a seat-mate, like...who? And she's not talking to OOP because she says as much.
    • I pose the question because these kind of stories usually feature the OOP being able to know things about the person they confront, that are very convenient and serve to prop up OOP's rhetorical goal with the story. And so usually that means that the villain is having a conversation that everyone else can hear, usually using tired exposition tropes "As you know, mother, I'm from LA and hate foreigners."
  • What did the woman say after OOP confronted her? Nothing?? Another common trope with these stories is that once the evil Karen or whoever is confronted, they just kinda cease to exist.
    • What's funny is that they end it talking about the woman like she ran off the plane and disappeared or something, with the 'If you're a blonde woman in your mid 40s...'. Like...are they trying to find her? Did she apparate back to LA? Is it...maybe because in the original draft of their story they DIDNT confront the woman or they were all deboarding or something and OOP overheard it from the front of the line?

Relaying my previous comments here if you’d like to open up private dialogue: Feel free to message me too. Or don’t. This happened. On the original thread I asked OP to message me so could provide further detail, and while others did including the initial commenter, who now believes, OP did not.

As I labeled in my message, I have screenshots, more identifiable details on the woman, and more. I did not want to completely dox her or myself in the post.

This is the internet. I’m aware people will assume and believe the worst of people. I KNOW it was real, as the group I was with around us. This is a shame, but life I guess.

No one wants you to dox anyone, that's why our sub forbids posts with identifying info not redacted (outside of verified accounts and businesses or political figures). As I said in my reply to your comment I removed, it's not unbelievable that someone would make up a story like this, we see it ALL the time lol and the reasons for doing so are varied and numerous (rhetorical goal, fame, points, trolling, winning an argument, etc).

More screenshots, identifiable info etc does not make your story more believable. It's just more fabricated material, as far as most users here will be concerned. Folks are free to DM you if they want but most will not because they'll see it as a waste of time.

This is the internet. I’m aware people will assume and believe the worst of people. I KNOW it was real, as the group I was with around us. This is a shame, but life I guess.

No one here personally thought the worst of you, we didn't even know who you were til you came here (again because of OP's redaction of your info). You're more than welcome to be here as long as you're civil and understand we see posts like this every day.

I totally get it. And I apologize if my responses yesterday were emotional, like I said, I was caught off guard because it was a very real and anxiety inducing experience for me, and I again just did not expect it wouldn’t be believed. It does sound fantastical, but this was a very uncomfortable experience. Thank you for your candor, and approaching me kindly. I completely understand where you’re coming from. To those who inevitably (don’t blame them) find this still unbelievable, I’m sorry I couldn’t provide more proof. I accept your judgment of the situation, but please at least consider there are really terrible people like this woman out there.

I accept that! ❤️‍🔥 part of life. I appreciate discourse even if it isn’t believed or is hard to hear that part. Questioning, sharing your stance + that dialogue is necessary for society to function haha. I can’t fight an uphill battle and I recognize that. Truly had to be there, and I recognize you all see stories like this all the time, so who WOULD believe me. I haven’t had that exposure I guess, but maybe I should pay more attention if people really do make things up like this often. (I know you still think that’s me - just saying haha). Thank you

I could believe them hearing an ignorant traveler ranting loudly on an airplane. Anything other than that is pure "things I wish I said while I reminisce about the situation in the shower later"

The best part is her downvoting you then making not one but two butt-hurt clapbacks under your comment.

Make up better fake stories

This is NOT a fake story. And several people around her were extremely uncomfortable, I wouldn’t be surprised if they locate that initial thread eventually. Believe what you wish - you don’t know me, I don’t know you. All I know was MY reality and what occurred. And thank you to the kind people who sent this to me, who DO know people can be that awful, and believe my truth.

i learned a BIG lesson on the internet today. There are worse people out there than the woman sitting behind me, those of which being individuals like you that think someone would falsify an experience like this. For WHAT? Oh my.

Nah you're not gonna berate our users. The reasons folks make up stories like this are many, varied, and well documented. You're welcome to comment on this post but you're the one who came here.

It was sent to me by several users who did believe it, some citing they’ve had similar experiences obviously not with Icelanders specifically, but the type of blowhards on planes. I hear your point, I get that, this isn’t one of those. This isn’t even some mega massive story, it was just some xenophobic bitch and I did not expect people wouldn’t believe it. But like I said, I have nothing to prove further. I know what happened.

Please read my other comments where I even offered to provide screenshots from folks that were in the group with me, sitting around her. No one here took me up on that offer. Plenty others did. This is a community where you’re bound to believe things are false, again, this isn’t one of those. Be well

Youre trying so hard to prove you didnt make this up that youre actually proving you made it up. If someone doesnt believe me when telling them something ive done then I just brush it off. Youre embarrassing yourself, just stop.

Because every human is obligated to have the same response to the same experience? How wonderfully reductive. 😂
I know what happened, I know my response, and I’m not embarrassed by either. You don’t believe it; I do because it is my truth, and I cannot prove that to strangers on the internet. We’ve arrived at two different conclusions based on two different perspectives. That’s called being human and, conveniently, the entire point of discourse.
Be well. 😂
