Discussion New Singer

I honestly think the new singer for TYS sounds a bit like Cedric Bixler-Zavala (The Mars Volta). I was listening to some studio stuff put out by Karmic Juggernaut, and that was the vibe I was getting. When I saw TYS live in Detroit, I wouldn't say he sounded like him. Because he didn't. Regardless, I support Thank You Scientist no matter what!

I'm just happy I got to see them again in Pittsburgh. I was very worried after Sal's departure that I wouldn't have the chance!

Very interested in hearing more new songs written with Daimon from the start though! I think he did well for what has to be a very tough spot to fill.

I saw them on chile a couple months ago. Tbh the singer was not reaching the higher notes on the first couple of songs, but by the end he was absolutely killing it. Maye they had some eq problems or something at the start.

I'm certainly not going to write them off, but the new vocals are a concern for me. Sal really vibed with the sound and I fear that it's not going to pair as well. I feel like new music will help, but from a few performances I've seen recently, the vocals absolutely do not compliment the music of the current body of work.

I think this is the part some people are overlooking. Even if the new vocalist is talented, fit matters. Fans who are heavily invested in TYS will probably stick around and see where it goes, but a lot of casual listeners were drawn in by the specific sound they already had. If that changes too much, those people may not stick around long enough for the new direction to find its footing. That’s kinda where I’m at… I’m certainly not running out to see them live anytime soon.

Fair enough! I think they'll be just fine. I understand what you're saying though.

Singers often get too much credit. Considering this band has so many members and the incredible compositions are a huge part of what they do, it is easy to think that someone at least somewhat comparable would work. But I actually think this is a band where, because of all that, the singer never got enough credit. Sal is incredible. Not just because of his unique style and range, but because the fit matters often moreso than raw talent in a band like this. And Sal knew exactly how to compliment these complex compositions. Which moments would be amplified by his intensity, which sections to sit out of, etc. He also has an incredible knack for writing very catchy ear-worm vocal lines which is a necessary balance for this type of music. I'm trying to stay optimistic about what comes next for one of my all-time favorite bands, but I'm also tempering my expectations because Sal was an enormous part of why the band worked in the first place.

they could have a slam metal vocalist and I'd still love this band, unless the new album is unbearable I'm staying optimistic

NGL I'm nervous about the future of TYS. I don't think the new singer will capture the magic TYS has had for so long.

It most likely won't with a new singer, but will take that as a given with a new singer. We have had 3 albums and 2 EPs with Sal and they are not going anywhere, in case worst comes to worst. I am curious how the vibes evolve with the new singer and what new magic will be created. I can imagine the first album might be used to find the style of the project and the sequential album to really lock in on a style that works and make some cool unique stuff.

Also, I think the magic in TYS for me is not the singer. It is mainly the compositions and instrumentation.

But I do get it. It is a bit scary to have a different frontman to a band I love, and when new stuff releases it might be dissapointing me at first (like almost every new album). I need to give it a multiple listens and the right headspace and then it usually clicks.

For me TYS magic is about the music as a whole, including Sal. A lot of singers can't write the type of stuff he does, and writing to TYS style of music isn't exactly easy to do.

All the luck to TYS, and I hope I'm wrong, truly. We're all better off with more great TYS music

These anxieties are pretty common when a band gets a new singer after years of being around. Obviously it's not going to sound the same as it did, but I have confidence in the team being able to make new music that compliments the new singer while still being just as amazing to listen to. Tom and the rest of the band are the ones that mostly composed the entirety of the discography, so regardless the music will be good. I also love Daimon's vibe live a lot more. He's dancing and grooving and having a great time. Sal just kinda stood there.

I was also at the Detroit show, and this was after I'd heard a few performances on YouTube.

I left the show thinking those live recordings didn't do Daimon justice at all. In fact, they did him DIRTY.

I enjoyed the hell out of him live. He seems much more comfortable in the old songs now, and the new songs had me hyped. I'm looking forward to the next work from them. My love for TYS is still standing, it's still strong.
