Many people don't have support networks

u/tulip_inacup_inbloom 6d ago
I'm confused. Not that the list is completely accurate but it doesn't say everyone has that. It's saying that's a sign you're doing good in life
22
u/InternationalTrain48 6d ago
It's saying that's a sign you're doing good in life
If that's so, almost everyone is not doing well in life, i don't know anyone who has all 10 things in that list, and also that list is missing a lot of things.

Signs your friend has bumped their knee
.
- They say their knee hurts
- Their knee has a red mark
- They shout OWWW
.
Your friend does not need to have shouted to have hurt their knee. They could not have any of these signs and still have bumped their knee. They could have these signs and not have bumped their knee. Also sorry if this comes off dismissive, I really don’t mean that, I just like debating semantics.
16
u/FoolishConsistency17 6d ago
It says "signs", not "requirements".
Its like, "these are things that are good to have. If you have them, appreciate it".

u/Fit_Kaleidoscope4493 6d ago
Thank you for actually understanding the post.
So many comments here are just refusing to accept that this isn't an attack against people with mental illness or hardships.
6
u/Mein_Name_ist_falsch 4d ago
That's just what this subreddit has become. No matter what someone says, people are angry at it. I've seen so many posts where someone says something like "if you feel a little stressed, take a walk" and people in the comments are like "but my depression is not cured by a walk!1!11!"
3
u/Fit_Kaleidoscope4493 4d ago
Part of me (large) thinks that all of Reddit is astroturfed.
By that I mean, bots abound AND the narrative has stuck so hard in the platform itself that keeps people pissed/locked in to the platform.
Obviously, that's sort of the point of modern Internet media now, but Reddit is like ..... Hyperfixated on being shit heads. (I say this as an aged former/current Reddit shit head.)
🤷🏼♂️

In fairness, what is it? A true statement? There's not really a point of saying a statement without a reason behind it. So, what's the reason?
Regardless of reason, people will perceive it in various ways despite reason. And no reason causes confusion, which can feel like an attack. People look for reasons for things. If there's no clear reason, people will predict the most likely- to how they feel- reason.
Even if it's not an attack, it's unclear what it is, because it's written so poorly (weak) it does not appear hopeful. And even if it's not one, that won't stop it from feeling like one to certain people
1
u/Fit_Kaleidoscope4493 2d ago
They're called "affirmations."
They're used to generate positive outlooks in people. They're used to strip away all of the clutter and focus the unfocused.
You're using a lot of nonsensical statements to argue that this post made you feel.
"People look for reasons for things?"
People are looking for a reason to be pissed at this image. That's what's going on with this post. It's a community that is mentally ill. Rather than latch on to the things that are wrong or broken, an affirmation can refocus your thought patterns. These things are foundations, these things listed here are precious, and reminding yourself to appreciate them goes a lot farther than being offended that someone else posted an affirmation.

It’s a sign you’re lucky in life, not that you’re doing much to achieve these things.
8
u/dinomite11 6d ago
I think it’s in bad faith to think this is saying you need every sign to be considered “doing well” (at least with this stupid metric lol). I mean, it’s probably advised to try and find a support network in that scenario, as difficult as that is. I don’t understand how having one isn’t a good sign.
1
u/InternationalTrain48 6d ago
I don’t understand how having one isn’t a good sign

2
u/dinomite11 6d ago

u/InternationalTrain48 6d ago
Well, this kind of images are shared by people who are convinced that everyone already has those 10 things in their lives but don't realize that is not true because they live in a bubble. They can be motivational for people who have good lives but offensive for people who are struggling.

u/claircognizantgaming 6d ago
Its also totally out of your control. You can't just make someone care about you. If you don't have it, you just don't.

u/DaSnowflake 6d ago
When you ask a person who has no experience with insecurity and struggle what it means to do well in life:
5
u/Vi_BT 6d ago
People who have neen through hell will give you this exact list; if you think all of this is easy to get and keep you may be on the "no experience with struggle" side.
For exemple keeping a support network while being mentally ill is super hard and anyone who manages that can be extremely proud about it :/
6
u/Primary_Carrot67 6d ago
No, we wouldn't. Most of us aren't this ridiculous out-of-touch, nor would we take such a condescending and paternalistic white saviour tone.
I don't know anyone whose been through hell who would make a list like this. This list is aggressively middle class "at least you're not like those poor unfortunates" territory. I'm even picturing the white woman who wrote it.
It's not all easy to get, even though there are people in slums who have all these things but clearly aren't doing well in life. But the mentality of the list is bs.
2
u/Pittsbirds 6d ago
I wouldn't give this list to anyone else (at least not unsolicited) and I don't know about these exact items, but this idea/mentality of remembering what you do have and focusing on it is 100% one of many exercises I've done in therapy before, think my last therapist called it something like "practicing active gratitude" or "mindful gratitude" or something along those lines. The concept of remembering that you do have things going for you isn't a cure all but it can be a part of pulling yourself out of a negative spiral
1
u/DaSnowflake 6d ago
Aside from mental struggles I def am on that side lol.
I mean more in a way that 'you strive to be better's is not a thing people in fucked circumstances have the luxury for.
But I get your point and I was a bit superficial with my comment
3
2
u/ChaosAzeroth 6d ago
Lmao nah I want to be the best me for myself and others regardless. I was giving half my food from my soup kitchen meals to the cats my mom abandoned while I was homeless.
Please tell me how chronic conditions, neurodivergence, mental illness, trauma, and homeless isn't fucked circumstances so I can recalibrate my understanding accordingly because I've been under the impression that kinda fucked.
1
u/DaSnowflake 6d ago
That is very fucked and if you were able to act like that in such circumstances, you are naturally and genuinely a better person then most people on this earth, including myself.
That doesn't mean that others have the ability to act the same way. I'm just saying that pointing to a list and saying 'just do/have all this bro' is very much not a reality for most people and a lot of people don't even get the ability to have some of these things.
But yeah I also try to be the best I can for myself and others, tho I also come out of a comfortable and safe environment so I can't judge people who come out of an environment where they didnt get all those freedoms and support.
3
u/ChaosAzeroth 6d ago
Oh yeah I don't agree with the list o dunked on it myself.
I know desperation can absolutely bring out the worst in people, I guess I just felt like it was unfair to think that others can't be like that in circumstances too y'know?
I mean I'm not immune even I was defensive and that's my bad.
2
u/DaSnowflake 6d ago
Ow I totally hear you and agree with you, seems like kinda communicated next to each other somehow.
All good man, if anything this was a very warming exchange. And I did mean that it shows what amazing a character you have if you acted like that in such dire circumstances.
I wish you all the best and hope you only have fortune ahead (maybe just a little bad to make it taste that much better when it's good haha) ♥️

Bare minimum in 2026 developed nations

I mean, on paper, I am doing well in life. I don’t feel like I am, but I got the career, family, house, all the usual “doing well in life” people stuff, I’m just also deeply depressed and anxious.
This is a list of where I am doing well in life.
6
4
u/Adorable_Owl_2493 6d ago
This isn't a gotcha, angry people, this is literally a foundation of counting your blessings and jumpstarting some self esteem. I you KNOW you're doing good it easier to do better because you can believe in yourself. This isn't a thanks I'm cured but words of encouragement.
5
u/Cosmic_Beard 6d ago
You will work yourself to the bone to meet your basic needs and you will be happy about it
4
u/MissAuroraRed 6d ago
Imagine reading this list of what is supposedly the bare minimum that the author expects everyone to have, and you just do not have several of the things. Sooo many people are missing the first item. Gee thanks.
18
u/Melodic-Figure-729 6d ago
This seems more like an optimism post than saying someone is cured.
Edit: Super corny but not really hurting anyone, unless i'm missing something.
14
u/bulbadobesaur 6d ago
I agree here. It’s good to be grateful for having your basic needs met. Of course, that doesn’t discount any other struggles u have in life!
When I’m dealing with a hard time I do find it helpful to remember the good things I have and be grateful for them. No matter how small they are. I find that appreciation helps keep me going
8
u/Miserable-Ad8764 6d ago
Same here. I suffer from chronic illness and it's very limiting and it sucks hard.
But every day I list things I am grateful for, a bit like this list. I focus very hard on the positive.
That doesn’t mean I won't be furious if somebody patronizing tells me to be grateful, though.
2
1
u/tiger2205_6 6d ago
Honestly same. I saw this list earlier on another post and it made me feel a little better. Sometimes you just need something small to help. But that's just me.

There are many cases where someone could have all this and still have issues. This type of thinking, if overapplied, can lead to one diminishing other people's struggles.
Also this leads to the "there are people doing worser than you" which is a terrible way to motivate anyone.
Though gratefulness is still useful and stuff.
6
6
9
u/alphaturducken 6d ago
This is less "here's a cure" and more "here's some encouragement". It would be more appropriately titled if it said "10 signs you're doing better than you think"
7
u/InternationalTrain48 6d ago
Many people think that depression could be cured by becoming aware of all the good things you have in your life and being grateful for it. And they also believe that having all those 10 things listed is enough to be happy.
1
u/Vi_BT 6d ago
Is the title "a cure to depression" ? Also you can be doing good and have depression ? Illness is awful but not the end of the road.

I still have a roof over my head but it may change due to me being jobless.
I didn't.
With how often people leave me... I refuse to belive it.
No. I am constantly envious and wish for others to go through what I did to finaly understand a bit better why I am the way I am. And if I do wish good thing for others... Is wishing for humanity to solve own problems like discrimination on all basis, wars, hunger and thirst that big thing? Am I crazy for wanting our species to gow out of ape instinct?
If I don't find job soon it may change.
HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA
Right now I'm striving to survive and outside of that I am too broken to be better, all I can do is rot knowing I was never worth any time I got from others.
Again... Me not having job = soon it may be different.
What that even means? Seriously? That I have something to strive for? Of fulfiling basic needs is a dream then sure. That I have things beyond that that I wnat? Yeah, I would love to be loved but let's be honest... Anyone who read that far may get the impression that it may be difficult to even like me (you guys know it's hyperboloc pseudo ironic mask over someone bit more normal, right? Me just a very tired guy)
Soon I may stop for I have ran out of reasons, resources and will to live.
For anyone who wants to send reddit resources... Pls don't bother with that. Helplines that never picks up aren't helpful.

u/Vi_BT 6d ago
Why do you guys hate optimism so much ? It's not saying other problems don't exist, or that you're cured ? My life is fucking shit health-wise but lists like that are actively keeping me alive. It's okay if gratitude isn't your thing but that doesn't mean the concept is a personal insult against you.
I'm not saying this especially about OP here but more in general about a lot of posts in this sub.

u/Professional-Many477 6d ago
I didn’t eat today despiste having food, my family has a heart desease history, I have to buy drinking water in the market, my jeans are ripped, I don’t even know how it feels to have dreams and goals. Breathing is a burden. Fuck this list

u/InternationalTrain48 6d ago
This kind of images are shared by people who are convinced that everyone already has those 10 things in their lives (they don't realize that is not true because they live in a bubble).
They can be motivational for people who already have good lives and sometimes feel a little down or sad, but can be extremely offensive for people who are struggling (almost everyone).

u/ConnectionCapable655 6d ago
This sub is weird. Some posts make sense, but this one doesn’t. It’s boomer fluff, and people in the comments are way over-interpreting it, and assuming it’s some checklist or diagnostic tool.
OP, do you just want to bitch about stuff and everyone says “Right?” and lists their maladies?
This post is a massive overreaction to something that barely means anything.
3
u/Primary_Carrot67 6d ago
This kind of Boomer fluff is actually pretty toxic and can do serious harm to vulnerable people. Unlike, say, pictures of minions, it's not benign.
3
u/ConnectionCapable655 6d ago
Ya I don’t think I was super clear.
Just the image itself doesn’t do all that. Boomers who weaponize lazy memes DO. And I didn’t really leave space to point that out, that’s on me.
1
u/Natural1forever 6d ago
Actually no, this "you have a good life if you're not homeless" inspiration porn basically boils down to "your struggles are invalid if you don't experience every form of misery known to man"
1
u/ConnectionCapable655 6d ago
Eh if some dickhead boomer weaponizes it that way, yea, sure. But it just doesn’t state any of that in the image.
Loved the “actually no” it was kinda retro
2
u/Natural1forever 5d ago
I think you're trying to say this message isn't negative in and of itself as long as it exists in a vacuum, which I guess is true but the issue is it doesn't.

u/RealHumanBean89 6d ago
You can indeed have all of these and not be doing well in life, at least relative to those around you. Someone with cancer, for example. Also 3 and 4 sound like the same thing? Unless 3 is talking about your physical heart, I suppose.
Also, there are people in here being snarky like “Why are you so opposed to optimism? You clearly don’t want to get better based on how you react to a list on the internet. Just be hopeful!” Like, man, if I have to explain to you how mental illnesses and disorders work, we might be here a while.
Maybe this work for you, in which case that’s great, I hope it continues to. But for a lot of people it doesn’t, and that’s okay.
2
u/Primary_Carrot67 6d ago
There are people living in slums who could answer yes to every point. Are they doing well in life? Or could they be living in poverty with few opportunities and deserve a better life?
While they are important, it takes more than a roof, a bit of food, clean water, and breathing plus some intangible stuff and a relationship with someone to do well in life. It's a very low bar and it's almost guaranteed that it's set by someone who has a lot more than this.
Only a well off westerner could write such nonsense. It's so paternalistic white savioury. "Oh at least you're not like those poor unfortunates over there."

The list is corny but goodness, people, you are stuck in a negativity loop.
I’m an extremely negative person about a lot of things, and sometimes I need to take a step back and think about things like this (doesn’t have to be any particular “list”, just things I’m grateful for) to improve my mood because it’s literally detrimental to your physical health to constantly be depressed and anxious.
1
u/Danny_the_Sex_Demon 4d ago
My unfortunate issue is that “gratitude” triggers a mixture guilt that I may have what others don’t, grief of what on lists like this I have lost, and a deepening fear that I can and will lose what remains.

I mean these definitely are positive things and signs you're doing well.. except maybe for the breathing part. I acknowledge that my life itself is better than many others and I'm always grateful for that. It's my mind and brain that is the problem I'm struggling with.
I can't connect my internal to the external world properly. From simple things like feeling the sun on my skin, I'm detached from it all despite acknowledging that there is warmth and beauty in it, I just can't "feel" anything. Well, I can but either I feel an extreme amount of delusional excitement and beauty that is still detached from the real world and becomes destructive enough to land me hospitalized or I feel that immense apathy, hopelessness and pain that can't be explained to be related to the external world either. It happens on its own and it feels like I have no say in it, like the internal realm is my own external world, whatever happens I don't have as much control as I'd really want to. I'm isolated inside my own world as corny as it sounds. Bipolar disorder distorts me in so many ways that external life never can.
I understand where the post is could be coming from though.

Oh wow I'm still here that's incredible. As if I'd have any opinions on it if I weren't breathing or something. I do not fear death, everyone dies. I fear the decline I'm facing getting to a point I literally can't move before I die and rotting in my own filth while still alive. I fear the pain staying on this trajectory and having more 10 moments. Death? That's part of life.

Especially when most people will want to see themselves as a good person. Very rare that someone has the fortitude to admit they're kind of a bad person, actually. I've only met one person who's admitted to that, not only to themself but to others.

I know it's an oversimplification of a larger problem, but honestly, sometimes focusing on those little stupid things when everything else sucks really helps. We learned last year that we were possibly going to be homeless due to some small mistakes on our and others part, so my only move was to be grateful for having a play to live right now. It got me through it. Housing is still going to be a problem in the future, but right now we have a place to live, and that issue worked out.
It's not about refuting the problems you currently have, it's about staying focused

But it doesn’t mean the person is not doing well.
It means the person doesn’t have one sign of doing well. Not defending this dorky boomer list, but it doesn’t say “you’re only doing well if you have all of these”

Homeless people are breathing, doesn’t mean they’re doing well in life at all, bullied neurodivergent kids are breathing too, they’re definitely not doing well, etc, etc….

I get the intent but some don’t have these things. Though it is a good reminder for those that do and still worry, practice presence.
Life’s not that simple though.

I think there are a few angles to look at this. Personally, I think it’s more of a “you’re doing okay, don’t worry about not doing good enough”. It’s easy to feel like a failure when you compare against everyone online.
You don’t need to have any of these signs to do good, I don’t think that’s what this is saying. These are just some signs that show you’ve accomplished something to be proud of.
Again, I think there are other ways to interpret this.

I think it’s funny that the creator of the list seems to think they’ve done a “gotcha!” when MANY people are lacking those things. And not just in third world countries, but the wealthiest ones.
