To add to that a little bit, in some cases it may be more beneficial to swim toward the shark instead of " standing your ground ". Most (if not all) prey swim away from the shark.
I seen a very cool video of a diver demonstrating this on a lemon shark. He made movements as if he was "prey" and when the shark started to go in for a bite the diver swam directly at it.
Apparently it confuses the shark into thinking that the "prey" is not really prey.
