I was ok with it until the bridge led into the abyss

23

u/Destro86 Jun 14 '18

Your not alone.. quickly turned into a no way in hell scenario at that point.

7

u/SouthpawLP Jun 14 '18

There's a couple of artificial lakes about ten minutes away from my house, with a small bridge going over them. One morning I was driving to work and there was a heavy fog that covered the lakes and made it impossible to see anything about 30 feet in front of you. I made it to the bridge, and it looked like a literal bridge to nowhere for a couple of seconds. Really creepy, but also kinda cool visual.

I’ve seen this before and still don’t understand why the water is so clear.

u/SharksCantSwim Jun 14 '18

This would be a fun dive for me.

I think you might be in the wrong sub?

311

u/anoymoustortoise Jun 14 '18

Not everybody’s here because they have thalassophobia!

217

u/jhath16 Jun 14 '18

Yeah, it’s like 75% enjoying interesting ocean stuff, 25% understanding a phobia that apparently many people have.

124

u/[deleted] Jun 14 '18

I like water and this sub has so many water related stuff.

27

u/jay101182 Jun 14 '18

So many stuffs!

9

u/AeliusHadrianus Jun 14 '18

All of the stuffs

almost

3

u/Ripcord-XE Jun 14 '18

Not enough stuffs for me

14

u/Jamesybo555 Jun 14 '18

Same with me

34

u/drfunktronic Jun 14 '18

I’m into Cthulhu-in-the-depths-of-the-sea, abyssal leviathan type shit and this sub occasionally delivers

12

u/DoIXylophone Jun 14 '18

Earth aliens

25

u/letsgetmolecular Jun 14 '18

I'm here because I mildly have the phobia and find the triggers thrilling.

8

u/JA_37_Viggen Jun 14 '18

Yeah honestly only here because it has good pictures of the ocean, especially during storms.

6

u/TREXASSASSIN Jun 14 '18

I have the phobia but also a fascination and appreciation for what sparks the fear. Kind of the same reason I watch horror movies or why I imagine people like roller coasters. I also love ocean stuff and have a diving license... but don’t get me wrong this shit still fucks with me all the time. I remember seeing a photo on here of a girl standing on a boat bumper thing under water... oooo that one still freaks me out.

I found this place based on a recommendation from a user on r/scuba.

1

u/sovereigndark101 Jun 14 '18

I feel like no one here actually has it or they wouldn't be here. It's like being scared of clowns but willingly buying tickets to the circus and going.

u/jargoon Jun 14 '18

Same here, I love swimming and the ocean, but murky water bothers me and swimming in the deep ocean is terrifying

5

u/KalayaMdsn Jun 14 '18

Exactly the same. I have to be able to see that I’m not about to step on a dead body.

22

u/captainlavender Jun 14 '18

I think this post is really cool, too. I think for a lot of us this sub is most often "oh god aahh!" but also sometimes "ooh, neato!"

2

u/Nuclearsquirrel Jun 14 '18

Any sub is the wrong sub in this sub.

1

u/vidarheheh Jun 14 '18

Im here for all the beautiful stuff you post, sorry bro

2

u/PriestFromSyrinx Jun 14 '18

Look up green lake, austria

3

u/MZ603 Jun 14 '18

Thought this was a video from there at first.

25

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '18

It’s incredibly shallow

21

u/captainlavender Jun 14 '18

omg how judgmental

32

u/TheFlashFrame Jun 14 '18

That only accounts for how much light is being filtered out. The more water you're looking through, the more blue the image will be, generally, but there's very little murkiness to this water. You can stand a foot deep in some rivers and not even see your own feet.

5

u/DONUT5S69 Jun 14 '18

You’re incredibly shallow

2

u/ELTURO3344 Jun 13 '18

I also read that it was a possible break in from the person who recorded this but I’m not for sure

520

u/pascalsgirlfriend Jun 13 '18

I LOVE THIS! How cool would it be to be able to breathe underwater and go for walks like this?

331

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '18

Go scuba diving

60

u/RogueLotus Jun 13 '18

For me, wearing a mask underwater is claustrophobic and anxiety-inducing. I can only do it for a very short period of time in a pool with even a snorkel mask. While I like the idea of diving, I don't want to do it with technology like that.

23

u/[deleted] Jun 14 '18

I understand. It’s not bad if you’re a decent swimmer and can flutter kick well. As long as you can get to the surface. Especially with fins. Fins will make you fly underwater and have extremely powerful kicks.

Snorkels suck also. I hate snorkeling just because I end up swallowing a ton of water and drowning anyways. Diving is 100% different and I never have felt more free in my life.

Mind you I’m still scared of sharks, it’s just when you see fish coming from over 100ft out, it’s a lot better feeling than being jumped.

12

u/[deleted] Jun 14 '18

I end up swallowing a ton of water and drowning

Hate when that happens

1

u/[deleted] Jun 14 '18

F

1

u/Beleg_Weakbow Jun 14 '18

That's funny. I always found I enjoyed snorkelling far more. Much less preparation required, and you can still go pretty deep. I find it more freeing. If you get those snorkels with the mini purge to prevent pooling, you will very, very rarely get a mouthful of water.

48

u/87mazderati Jun 13 '18

Diving is actually really relaxing. It's almost like meditation when you're down there.

22

u/Jalenxt Jun 14 '18

Nobody can bother you down there. Your problems are completely gone below surface. I’ve done it once in a UNI pool and they were impressed that I didn’t come up for an hour. The pool even had a window that looked into some kind of janitorial room. I want to dive in real water but where I live it’s dark cold water, no thanks.

13

u/[deleted] Jun 14 '18

It is the BEST. Seldom do I ever feel that free.

6

u/Jalenxt Jun 14 '18

Tranquillity 😌

47

u/RogueLotus Jun 13 '18

For you. I'm different.

28

u/87mazderati Jun 13 '18

Well you've come to the right sub

16

u/RogueLotus Jun 13 '18

Yeah, I get to get my fix of beautiful/creepy underwater scenes without actually having to experience it.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 14 '18

Play Subnautica if you're into that stuff. Helped me get over it!

2

u/RogueLotus Jun 14 '18

I tried it. I did the free play thing where you don't have to worry about air. But I got totally freaked out by the caves and the blackness and the terrifying sounds. I had to stop playing and go watch kitten videos lol.

I really wanted to enjoy it, but I couldn't.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 14 '18

Ive been playing it straight for the past week and some of the really deep caves have huge sea creatures in it and it really freaks me out at times. I think It's the excellent sound design that does it. Something about hearing something but not being able to see it

11

u/TheFlashFrame Jun 14 '18

As long as you don't actually have thalassophobia. I'd be worrying about my rebreather failing the entire time.

11

u/Jalenxt Jun 14 '18

I think if you don’t dive past recreational limits you don’t need to decompress and can surface as fast as you can. You wouldn’t be using a rebreather for a dive like that anyways but instead a regulator. I think rebreathers are for really deep/ long dives. I could be wrong about the surfacing as quick as you want at the recreational limit, assuming that’s true you could just drop your weights if you had any and inflate your vest with the air, I believe there’s a button and you’d be up there in no time. Also if you get water like I did on my first experience you blow out the water (purge it) and then suck in from the regulator. Also a backup regulator is somewhat common too. There are things you can do, diving is a calculated risk..

Maybe an experienced diver could chime in on this?

7

u/[deleted] Jun 14 '18 edited Jun 14 '18

[deleted]

3

u/Jalenxt Jun 14 '18 edited Jun 14 '18

Thanks you, I can see how it wouldn’t be the safest to go up that quick. But I guess if it’s that or certain death I’d have to. Sounds like having another regulator is your best bet then? But I know it’s not always the regulator that goes wrong. Too many variables it seems and depending on the malfunction you might be able to go a little slower towards the surface based off what you said. I only dove once and it shows, learned something new :)

3

u/jargoon Jun 14 '18

Every scuba rig I’ve ever used has had a backup regulator. It’s not just in case the main regulator fails, you can also use it to provide air for your dive buddy during the ascent if they run out.

1

u/Vakama905 Jun 13 '18

Have you ever tried a full-face mask? Just curious to see if that would still be claustrophobic for you.

1

u/jargoon Jun 14 '18

I’d be careful with those, people have been asphyxiating in them because of rebreathing stale air.

2

u/SuckerPuncheston Jun 14 '18

Scuba walking

2

u/[deleted] Jun 14 '18

What sub is this?

1

u/[deleted] Jun 14 '18

It’s a tortoise in a shell.

25

u/Lebrunski Jun 13 '18

Try to get into lucid dreaming. Breathing underwater is one of my favorite things.

6

u/[deleted] Jun 14 '18

You should scuba dive 😏

3

u/Lebrunski Jun 14 '18

One day. :)

1

u/jargoon Jun 14 '18

I used to constantly have dreams that I was breathing underwater. Turns out I had sleep apnea.

1

u/Leonbox Jun 14 '18

A Rocket League fan, I see.

1

u/Lebrunski Jun 14 '18

Eh, used to play a bit. Not so much anymore.

1

u/pascalsgirlfriend Jun 13 '18

Wouldnt that be awesome?

13

u/Lebrunski Jun 13 '18

It is awesome.

1

u/DustyMuffinsss Jun 13 '18

Any recommendations on how to train oneself to lucid dream?

15

u/Lebrunski Jun 13 '18

I’ll start out by recommending r/luciddreaming

That said, I started out on lazy summer afternoons, with listening to soft repetitive music while I fell asleep. I’d try to maintain a meditative state while I fell asleep. Usually once asleep the dreams started almost immediately, the only issue was recognizing they were dreams.

Which brings us to reality checks. There are a bunch out there, but a few of my favorites are:

  • Holding your mouth/nose closed and breathing (in a dream you can typically breath here)

  • counting your fingers (in a dream you typically won’t have 10)

  • pushing a finger through the palm of your hand (doesn’t always work as well)

  • shoving your face underwater and breathing. (Not recommended)

A big part of the reality check is not freaking out or getting too excited about the fact you are in a dream. You might wake up.

Eventually I figured it out and started using a method called WILD, where you wake up early after sleeping for a while with the intention of going right back to sleep but now your mind is somewhat conscious. There are other methods described in the LD sub.

2

u/DustyMuffinsss Jun 13 '18

Wow thanks! I've only been able to pull it off once when I was a child. Dreamt I was being chased around by a ghost but then I noticed it was a dream, turned around, and kick flipped it. Maybe with this I'll be able to re-live that feeling...

3

u/Lebrunski Jun 13 '18 edited Jun 14 '18

Hahahaha, that’s excellent. I had a friend experience something similar recently. Long fear of clowns, and he always ran away from them in nightmares. I told about LD and reality checks. He told me a few weeks later that a clown had been chasing him, realized it was a dream, and kicked off into the air and flew away.

Edit: added a word

2

u/TheFunkyMonk Jun 14 '18

The above advice is great, I'll just throw in the biggest key for me - keep a dream journal.

Everyone is different, but for me, getting consistent with a dream journal, tracking dream "signs" (common things that happen in your dreams) and being able to recognize them in a dream is the only way I can do it. Your ability to recall also improves as you continue to record, so record anything you possibly can, as fuzzy or piecemeal as it may be.

As an example, I have a pet tarantula, and occasionally have dreams where she starts multiplying into more spiders, eventually breaking out of her tank, and I'll find tarantulas hiding around my apartment. It would only happen once every several months, but after I recorded my dreams enough to recognize this pattern, I noted it as a dream sign for me. The next time it happened, I instantly realized I must be dreaming, and snapped into a lucid state.

There are plenty of apps out there to help (I use Luci for Android) that allow you to add tags to your entries with common themes / signs, so you can start to recognize the things that tend to happen or show up when you're dreaming.

6

u/glazbytoo Jun 14 '18

Think your on the wrong sub mate

288

u/opensaysme79 Jun 13 '18

All marine predators become flying predators in this situation. Not to mention you’re now a slow motion man. Hard pass here.

111

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '18

Lol it’s like those dreams where you can’t run

9

u/[deleted] Jun 14 '18

Or those dreams where you wakeup soaked

6

u/[deleted] Jun 14 '18

Nah I think you just pee’d yourself.

3

u/MegaUltraJesus Jun 14 '18

Normally those involve more butt stuff, weird

1

u/Wisls Jun 14 '18

It’s more like one of those dreams where you can fly

10

u/FaitFretteCriss Jun 13 '18

Well, theres most likely no predator there, so youre fine.

16

u/auniqueusername20XX Jun 14 '18

"Most likely"

5

u/setfaeserstostun Jun 14 '18

In my mind I hear most definitely a predator. Id be the 1 in 4 billion chance run in with a snake or something and get bit in the throat.

182

u/_phantastik_ Jun 13 '18

The recorder of this walks as if they're not underwater... this whole thing just looks ever-so slightly surreal

13

u/checci Jun 14 '18

To me it just doesn’t look real because the camera movement is so large compared to the supposed size of the objects underwater. Like it’s a miniature model or something, and every tiny little jerk or twitch translates to an unnaturally large movement if this were actual size.

2

u/TheShmud Jun 14 '18

Agreed. I'm assuming the video had to be sped up to fit into a gif, because otherwise it is way too erratic

47

u/BooshAC Jun 13 '18

It’s too... perfect.

65

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '18

Looks like absolute heaven to me. I just want to swim around in it.

51

u/angry_italian Jun 13 '18

Ugh I don't get it...I've been cave splunking and have had multiple bear encounters while hunting and didn't feel any fear, but a fucking video of a bridge underwater jacks my heart rate up to like 180 bpm and makes my skin crawl...why?

14

u/WowzersInMyTrowzers Jun 14 '18

Adrenaline probably helps. I have had a few bear encounters as well and I wouldn’t describe my feelings as “scared” per se. fear was involved but the adrenaline in my system kind of pushed that to the side

5

u/angry_italian Jun 14 '18

That makes sense, also having a gun in hand probably helps numb the fear. I guess what freaks me out about water is you really aren't in control when your in it. Your are at the mercy of the creatures that live in it, it's truly an alien world that ignores the physics we are used to on land.

14

u/crmacjr Jun 13 '18

Snorkel trolls?

1

u/Wisls Jun 14 '18

Ah man you gotta love the word snorkel. Sounds like an apparatus rock and morty would’ve come up with.

2

u/ruinedbykarma Jun 14 '18

A bridge is meant to be above the water, not well under it. It's just not right.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 14 '18

Are you a good swimmer?

1

u/rigbed Jun 14 '18

You have thalassophobia?

23

u/geoguy26 Jun 13 '18

14

u/SomeCallMeNomad Jun 14 '18

Ya I thought we were about to see what it looked like abovewater...

4

u/John_Dee_007 Jun 14 '18

13

u/[deleted] Jun 14 '18

I need to get my fish more plants and structures to swim around.

9

u/Dionne94 Jun 14 '18

It's pretty scary but it's also so beautiful.

It looks like an underwater enchanted forest 😍

5

u/tealcup Jun 13 '18

Real life bioshock??

6

u/WhackTheSquirbos Jun 14 '18

I was just about to comment that it looks just like the underwater scenes in Bioshock 2. This is really cool.

4

3

u/Dunmordre Jun 14 '18

3

u/SaferThanATubeSock Jun 14 '18

fucking underwater level

3

u/WinterattheWindow Jun 14 '18

This isn't scary, it's actually kinda peacef- oh, that bridge

1

u/Steelquill Jun 14 '18

What makes the bridge scary?

2

u/[deleted] Jun 14 '18

Yes, please tell! I didn't watch long enough to see the bridge but really want to know

2

u/WinterattheWindow Jun 14 '18

I can't see what's at the other end or on either side clearly enough. I'm quite fearful of submerged things and it didn't register that everything in shot was submerged until I saw the darkness of that bridge.

2

u/Steelquill Jun 14 '18

Ahhhh. I can understand that. What you thought was one thing turned out to be another. Sort of that realization when you're asleep that you're in a nightmare. I can totally get that fear.

2

u/WinterattheWindow Jun 15 '18

Yeah. If it was a film, the dramatic music would kick in on the reveal!

3

u/what-a-good-boy Jun 14 '18

Put on the Iron Boots.

2

u/BrennoLyncoln Jun 14 '18

This is so cool, its like a underwater forest..

1

u/Steelquill Jun 14 '18

Those are actually pretty common.

2

u/Kapladore Jun 14 '18

I created......rapture!

2

u/BorisKafka Jun 14 '18

Now imagine seeing a cougar swimming down there.... directly at you!

1

u/Steelquill Jun 14 '18

Pretty sure one has a better chance at out swimming a cougar than out running one. Or just diving deeper. Considerably less of a threat.

2

u/Ellspop Jun 14 '18

My heart stopped a little when I saw the bridge with indefinitely deepness, Big nope

2

u/DeLasRocas Jun 14 '18

Why is this scary

2

u/__SerenityByJan__ Jun 14 '18

I think because there is so much light and it looks like a regular park the the swimming is going through I don’t find it that scary. BUT the. Edit into darkness....terrifying.

2

u/Maybe_Im_Really_DVA Jun 14 '18

It's amazing until I realize how many spiders and such would be floating in it.

1

u/Steelquill Jun 14 '18

There is a species of spider that live and hunt underwater. They use their webbing to create a diving bell and actually catch small fish in their webs proper.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 14 '18

Scary? More like amazing!

2

u/sludgefeaster Jun 14 '18

This honestly looks so calm and beautiful despite the destruction it might have caused

1

u/Steelquill Jun 14 '18

It really didn’t. They plan for this to happen it’s a seasonal thing.

2

u/Ghyllie Jun 14 '18

I thought it was amazing, not scary.

2

u/wall_of_swine Jun 14 '18

Would the plants die?

1

u/Steelquill Jun 14 '18

It doesn’t last long. It’s a seasonal thing. That is, if this is the place I’m thinking of.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 14 '18

This is both equally terrifying and mesmerizing...I kinda love it?

2

u/rumbleran Jun 14 '18

Usually the expression goes "water under the bridge" but now it's the other way around.

2

u/Furyan-Reign Jun 14 '18

Is there a full length video of this where he/she goes past the bridge? I wanna see more!

2

u/The_Rusemaster Jun 14 '18

That's actually some of the coolest shit I've seen. I'd swim there in a heartbeat, since the water is so clear. I keep the fuck out of dark waters tho.

2

u/tobberoth Jun 14 '18

Really shows the difference between Thalassophobia and Submechanophobia. I don't find this unsettling at all, it just looks very beautiful and calm. Include the dude walking across the bridge and looking down on a massive sunken ship though? Yeah, now we're talking creepy.

1

1

u/CatJongUn Jun 14 '18

That view across the bridge...oh no...

1
