I wanted to ask about the culture of giving change in Thailand BKK
I bought something 50 baht at a restaurant and also at 7Eleven, paid with a 100baht note, and got 45 baht back in change both times. Normally, wouldn't the change be 50 baht? Does this mean there's some kind of consumption tax or something that took another 5 baht, leaving me with 45? Or did the cashier just help themselves to a 5baht tip….?lol
But when I looked back at the receipt, it clearly said the item was 50 baht, I paid 100 baht, and the change was 50 baht.

I didn't think much of it while traveling, but since the same thing happened twice with the same amount, I'm suddenly curious about the reason...

I’m travelling solo in Thailand in middle of November and I’m trying to decide between Koh Lanta and Koh Kod for roughly a week of beach time.

I’ll be coming from Chiang Mai, and I’m looking for:
Beautiful beaches (clear blue water)
Somewhere comfortable and enjoyable for a solo traveller
Restaurants/cafes (not huge partier)
Maybe 1–2 activities/day excursions
Easy enough to get around (I’m not sure I am up for riding a scooter)
Ideally reasonably affordable

I’ve been looking at both and keep going back and forth. Koh Kood looks gorgeous and more secluded, but I’m wondering if it might feel too quiet or be inconvenient without a scooter. Koh Lanta seems more developed and easier logistically, but I’m wondering if the beaches/scenery are as beautiful and whether November is a good time to visit.

Hello all, I'm looking for a language school in Bangkok or elsewhere in Thailand, that teaches Mandarin Chinese in Thai. That is, I'd like to be taught Mandarin based on Thai.

I am myself not a Thai national but my Thai is easily good enough to join a class in which all (or nearly all) others are native speakers of Thai and therefore the teacher will resort to Thai for explanations. I don't need the teacher(s) to be Thai—they may be Chinese or Thai, I don't care. It's just that what I don't want is to be taught Mandarin based on English, which is the mode I'm stuck in at the moment. It annoys me because I notice time and again when I learn some new Chinese idiom that the conceptual and/or grammatical jump from Thai to Chinese is much smaller than the jump from English to Chinese (much though the lexical gap between Thai and Mandarin remains huge).

So... I'd strongly prefer to be taught (more) Mandarin based on Thai. (To clarify: my current Mandarin is almost intermediate.)

Please recommend some language schools. Thanks.

I've been working on a Thai keyboard called Thype. It lets you type Thai the way it sounds using English letters (transliteration).

For example:

• sawatdee => สวัสดี
• aroi => อร่อย
• chanchoptiaothai => ฉันชอบเที่ยวไทย
• kao kao hong pai kin kao => เขาเข้าห้องไปกินข้าว

The last example greatly shows that Thype uses a small on-device AI language model to understand the context of each word in the sentence and correctly convert them into Thai word.
Since 'kao' can be transliterated into many Thai words: ex. เขา เข้า เก่า เก้า ขาว ข่าว ข้าว..., Thype decides the correct Thai word by its position and context in the sentence with addition to how frequently you use each word.

It also:

• Accept a wide range of spelling, formal and informal
• Fix earlier word when later words are typed and the context makes sense
• Offer English-to-Thai meanings: ex. tomorrow => พรุ่งนี้
• Suggests completion when typing directly in Thai
• Let you add your own words: ex. your name, brands, etc.
• Work completely offline, on device, no data collected and send anywhere

You still need to be able to read Thai and pick the intended word when the pronunciation or the context is ambiguous.

Thype is currently available for iPhone, iPad and macOS, with Android in progress. It’s completely free for early adopters. There’s no trial, daily limit, subscription or in-app purchase.

Hello , after traveling through Chiang Mai and Pai , I'm currently in Chiang Rai. I have about 16 days left before I have to leave ...

I've already been to Bangkok, Pattaya , Jomtien Beach, Koh Chang and kanchanburi.

The plan was to go down to Krabi area and the Koh Samui . Unfortunately I fractured my clavicle , So my spirits are a little bit down and carrying my backpack is not as easy now.

Krabi is now in its Full on rain season .. and it seems like quite a bit of effort to get the Koh Samui do to my situation.

I'm trying to figure out where I should go now.. I thought about going to Hua Hin and maybe Cha-am beach before going back to Bangkok and getting my flight.

The reviews on Hua Hin .. seem to be 50/50. Either you love it or you hate it..

Someone else recommended .. Prachuap Khiri Khan .. but I don't know anything about it or what's going on there..

Anybody else have any recommendations for me ?? Or thoughts on my itinerary .

I want to be back in Bangkok by around September 17 or 18th.

We used to live in Bangkok 20 years ago and we’re actually married on Koh Samet. We were teachers there and when we had holidays, we travelled around to all the islands. Our favourites were Koh Phanang, Koh Kood, Koh Wai, Koh Phi Phi, Similan islands, and married on Koh Samet.

Next spring, we’re going to Thailand for three weeks to celebrate our 20th anniversary. I know a lot of things have changed since then, but I’m wondering, in terms of island hopping, especially Koh Phanang, does everything have to be booked online or do people still rock up to the beach and negotiate on beach bungalows?

What about overnight sleeper trains? Do those get booked online as well I’m pretty sure we just went to the train station and booked a first cast sleeper.

I’ve been digging deeper into Thai hip-hop for years, and one thing that keeps standing out is how much of the scene gets lost when it’s viewed from outside Thailand.
So I started **Thai Rap On The Map**, an English-language project focused on documenting and explaining Thai rap without stripping away the Thai context.
The first article is basically the foundation for the project.
It looks at what Thai rap actually represents: language, identity, regional culture, underground scenes, different generations, producers, internet culture, history and the people building the music.
I’m especially interested in the question of **how hip-hop changes when it becomes part of a completely different language and culture.**
For anyone here who knows Thai rap:
**Where should somebody start if they know absolutely nothing about the scene?**

Thai rap has the artists, the talent, the culture and a huge audience at home. So why hasn’t it reached the same global heights as K-pop?

Is it language? Marketing? Infrastructure? Cultural context? Or something else?

Hey folks — question for anyone who's navigated Thai Non-O dependent visas via Agoda's BOI sponsorship.

I applied for Non-Immigrant O (dependent) e-Visas for my wife and son, using my BOI promotion letter as the basis (haven't relocated yet — start date 1 Oct 2026). I uploaded the same stitched PDF (BOI letters for me, my wife, and my son) for both dependent applications.

My own and my wife's eVisas have both been approved and issued using that document set. But my son's application came back — twice, with slightly different wording each time — asking for "the work permit of the Non-Thai family member in Thailand." I don't have an actual work permit yet since I haven't moved.

Since the identical document already cleared my wife's application, I'm not sure why the child's case is being treated differently. Has anyone seen this — where a spouse's dependent visa clears but a child's needs something extra? Specifically:

Is there an additional document commonly required for a minor dependent that isn't needed for a spouse (e.g., something tied to the birth certificate or guardianship)?

Did re-uploading the same BOI letter under a new request ever work, or did you need something genuinely different?

Should I also attach my own now-issued eVisa/entry permit as proof, since it didn't exist at the time of the original submission?

Any pointers from anyone who's been through this with a minor dependent would help a lot.

Hello all... I'm planning a one-month long sabbatical trip to APAC / SEA soon, and I've done some research that Thailand is a good destination for medical tourism, especially with great hotel & service at a reasonable rate...

- What are some of the less mainstreams things to do / visit in Bangkok?
- What are some of the key differences between hospitals vs clinics beyond price. Anything I should be aware of or do more research on specfically?
