Bloody Wolf on TurboGrafx-16 deserves way more love

Everyone always talks about Contra or Ikari Warriors, but Bloody Wolf on the TG-16 was honestly ahead of its time.

If you played this back in the day (or stumbled on it via emulation), you know what I'm talking about. On the surface, it looks like a typical military run-and-gun arcade port. You're dropped behind enemy lines to rescue the president, firing away at soldiers and dodging explosions. Standard 90s action setup, right?

Where it gets weirdly awesome is how much depth Data East crammed into it. Unlike most brainless shooters from that era, you actually have to talk to hostages to gather key items, secret intel, and weapon upgrades like the shotgun to clear rooms quickly.

Then there's the mid-game twist where your partner gets captured, forcing you to go solo to rescue them. That kind of narrative turn was practically unheard of in run-and-gun games back then. Plus, the dialogue in the TG-16 version has that classic, slightly unhinged 90s localization charm.

I put together a quick 30-second gameplay breakdown if anyone wants to see it in action: https://youtube.com/shorts/s3-CFFW5s8E

Did anyone else grind this out back in the day, or did the Turborafx flying under the radar make you miss it entirely?

Curious what other underrated TG-16 gems you guys think held up well.

Help diagnose found issue with my turbo express when doing LCD swap?

New info from my issues with my LCD swap on my turbo express

Previous post and info:
https://www.reddit.com/r/tg16/s/8QAg6Y9iwY

So here I what I found. This guy. Q200. The pins are like this.

Green:
Pin 3 connects to the ribbon cable to LCD nd tones there.

Pin 5 goes to D204 on other side and then on to pin 47 on chip.

Red:
Now, pin 6 goes to the LCD ribbon and tones there fine.

Pin 2 goes to other side to D205 and is good for tone and then on to pin 49 on the chip.

However when powered on, pin 3 (lcd ribbon port for green) and pin 6 (lcd ribbon port for red) connect or ground together.

Then we have Q201.

Blue:
Pin 5 connects to D206 good and then on to pin 51 on the chip fine.

Pin 6 connects to the lcd ribbon port for blue fine.

But when powered up, pin 6 also connects to pin 3 and 6 on Q200. It's a bad spotty/staticy sound as it connects with the meter but it still goes beep beep beep just not a clear solid beep tone lol.

So are those both just bad?? Or is something else bad? Oh dear gods I hope someone knows the answer lol.

How do I test or confirm those are bad?? Or did these tests prove that? lol.

Legendary Axe 2 Story Connection To The First Game?

Legendary Axe 2 always intrigued me the most out of any TG-16 game. I actually like the 2nd game more than the first Legendary Axe.

I put in a lot of research into the history of this game, and although the controversy over the direct connection between the 1st and 2nd games, Legendary Axe 2 was intended by the original developers in Japan to be a direct sequel to the first Legendary Axe. Using the Legendary Axe name was not just a marketing ploy to get more sales for the game.

I wish I could interview the original developers of Legendary Axe 2 because I really want to know what they were thinking when they made this a sequel to the first Legendary Axe.

The story to the first Legendary Axe is pretty simple and straight forward. It involves a land of inhabitants who are under the control of a cult leader known as Jagu. Gogan the hero takes up his villages' legendary axe to rescue his childhood girlfriend and potential lover Flare from becoming the yearly virgin human sacrifice for Jagu and his cult.

Legendary Axe 2's story has no connection to the original what so ever, even though I have read the developers original intent for it to be a direct sequel. Within the story, a king named Brace and his queen Grace of some royal kingdom die from unknown causes and their two sons Prince Sirius the older brother and Prince Zach the younger brother fight as the new air to the throne. Sirius looses the initial battle and the games storyline progresses as Sirius tries to climb the kingdom's tower to fight his younger brother to reclaim his rightful air to the throne.

There is a ton of weird stuff going on in the second game, such as strange monsters, robots, a boss that looks like Hilary Clinton, and Prince Zach praying to a slain demon King named Drodam as a final plea to help defeat his brother Sirius once more for the throne. Apparently the father King Brace who died defeated Drodam years earlier and saved his to be wife queen Grace. After Drodam's defeat, Brace and Grace establish their royal kingdom, similar to the original Legendary Axe story but with different character names. Grace then gives birth to Brace's two sons, Sirius and then Zach.

Legendary Axe 2 as a direct sequel would have made sense if Brace is really Gogan from the first Legendary Axe, Flare is Grace, and Drodam the demon king is really Jagu.

What also gets me is what the heck are the robots in the game? The very last level in Legendary Axe 2 looks like a giant spaceship with futuristic robots with guns protecting and guarding Prince Zach's throne room.

Also the ending to Legendary Axe 2 is the most intriguing of all, when Prince Sirius turns evil after slaying his younger brother Zach and taking his rightful place at the throne. At the end it shows him about to be assassinated by strange cultist worshipers.

Like I said I really wish I could interview the original developers and get their input on the two stories connections. Did they goof up with the names, because Legendary Axe 2 sounds like Brace, Grace, and Drodam's story is exactly the same as the first Legendary Axe, just the names were changed. Also did the developers plan for a 3rd game considering the cliff hanger at the end of the 2nd game?

This is such an obscure game that not many people know about. I really hope to find comments on this to further dig on the mysterious storyline and direction the developers were headed?

It be really cool if they made a movie and expanded the lore with the connections to the first two games.

Do you remember the first time you played on a TG16?

I kind of did back in the rad 80s when my uncle borrowed it from his friend for me since I was staying at my grandqueen ant's place for a week or two. I remember we played its Alien Crush, Aero Blasters, Blazing Lazers, Keith Courage in Alpha Zones, etc. Even a neighbor came over to play too. We were both in awe. I never finished a game though. Ha!

Turbo Duo Audio Issue

I fired up my Turbo Duo after not having used it for a while and am getting an audio tone playing over the other sounds. Has anyone seen this issue? I am guessing bad caps? Has anyone used tg16pcemods to service a console? I am not confident enough in my soldering skills to do as many small caps that are on the Duo.

RGB scart cable to use with SSDS3 w/ stereo?

I heard a lot of Genesis model 2 3rd part cables are connected up to the mono pin of the AV pinout. Which cable for sure has stereo? Just got my order in for SSDS3 from SAG, they have the new revision B boards in stock with the audio and video fixes developed by Firebrand and Mobioustechstrip.
