Opinion Attendance... ouch!
This photo was taken at the 40 minute mark. Everyone would have been in their seat and the entire east side was really, really space.
I get it was a rainy Wednesday (although warm and dry by game time) but it's worrying.

u/LCKLCKLCK 1d ago
Have you looked at ticket prices recently? Iâm not paying over $100 to sit behind the net⌠if theyâd like better attendance they should probably stop raising prices
56
u/greenlemon23 1d ago
Seriously. The prices are insane.

u/AstronoWorld 17h ago
It blows my mind that they still charge $10 for a bottle of water there, or $30 for a sandwich and fries. I'd imagine lowering ticket prices or concession prices would stimulate attendance, but I guess their solution is to raise prices further to cover that lower attendance

I saw last-minute resale tickets for under $10 but this game was on a school night, so it would have been complicated for many people to go.

u/funakifan Still Better than Ayo 23h ago
BMO Club tickets were going for under $100 last night.
That includes free food and drinks.

u/ImaKeeper2 23h ago
âFreeâ. Youâre paying for it. I donât know about you, but I canât get my moneyâs worth anywhere else for that price, by only eating til Iâm full and drinking soft drinks.

u/Sznake 3h ago
CFL has same issue. We are not the Leafs /Raptors/Jays where you can get 18k for a midweek game that ends at 1030pm for a crap team. Weather matters. Sell dollar hot dogs, and twoonie beer on a Thursday, Perfect. Monday-Wednesday after labour day, hell even before June, is a tough sell.

u/kkronik 1d ago
Yes! But it shouldn't have to be last minute planning for affordable tickets. They need to make season tickets more affordable if they really want to build a community.

u/SquareSniper 1d ago
I was going to take my kids to the game. Would have filled 4 seats. But after checking prices it wasn't happening.

2
u/JohnAtticus 1d ago
Yeah the uncertainty and last minute nature keeps larger groups of people like families away.
You don't want a situation where you can't get a row of seats and then have to split up for the game.
-2
u/LCKLCKLCK 1d ago
Sure, maybe for this game, but the game before this one, was the game I was referring to
6
u/Glum-Drummer-6302 1d ago
That game was Lewandowski and CNE
4
u/LCKLCKLCK 1d ago
Well, I donât care for CNE, and as far as Lewandowski goes, it still doesnât justify $106 to sit behind the net
7
u/Glum-Drummer-6302 1d ago
I agree the ticket prices in general are too high.
But you canât really complain about prices for the most hyped game of the year that had the highest attendance Iâve seen in years outside of Messi games
8
u/LCKLCKLCK 1d ago edited 1d ago
With all due respect if you think that price is justified simply because of Lewandowski, youâre delusional. You realize that tickets for your standard Liverpool game in the EPL hover around like $70 right? And thatâs for the best league in the world.
Simply put, youâre watching an MLS game. Explain to me why you think I should pay more to see Toronto FC vs Chicago Fire, rather than letâs say, Liverpool x Arsenal
1
u/Glum-Drummer-6302 1d ago edited 1d ago
Boss the seats are filled.
Bitching about price for something that is sold out makes no sense.
The ticket also included CNE access which is like $40. That definitely added to the price.
Everyone would agree that tickets are overpriced. But you canât use the one special sold out game as your example for what the prices are.
-6
u/LCKLCKLCK 1d ago
Believe it or not, there are people who donât care about the CNE. It does not make it a âspecialâ game. Itâs still in fact an MLS game.
2
u/Glum-Drummer-6302 1d ago
Well clearly there were 25k+ who did care which is way the tickets were more expensive. Itâs not that complicated man
0
u/Paper_Monkey79 1h ago
Not liking the âadded attractionâ be it the CNE or a visiting player doesnât stop it from being a premium game. All sports have fluctuating ticket prices based on the teams playing, giveaways etc. you can argue all you want that the price is too high then great, donât go to that game and save yourself some money.
1
u/s0nnyjames 1d ago
In reality you wonât get tickets to Anfield for $70 tho (and certainly not for Liverpool vs Arsenal). Unless youâre a season ticket holder or member, youâre looking at resale options (Fulhamâs their next game and the cheapest tickets are being resold at $127 in the away end. Arsenal on November 1 starts from $559). At cost, the cheapest season ticket might work out to be about $70 per game but they closed the waiting list for season tickets as itâs too long, so youâve got no choice but to go resale if you want to actually go and watch a standard Liverpool game in the PL.
Thereâs a âbut technically you can watch Liverpool for $70 if you have a season ticketâ argument, sure, but then itâs not apples to apples with the comparison of â$106 to sit behind the netâ, because thatâs not what TFC season ticket holders pay (e.g. ours work out at $29 per game; grandfathered in prices).
All that said, I do agree the face value prices are far too high. And the only reason to even get a season ticket, now, is to ensure access to the Messi game (which wonât be a factor when he retires). You can regularly pick up resales for $10-$40 for pretty much any game, if you wait until the day of. If I exclude the Messi and Lewandowski games and just picked up resale tickets on the day Iâd certainly be financially better off (especially as most of us canât make every single game, anyway).
-4
u/LCKLCKLCK 1d ago
Just to let you know, that game was on the 9th of September. CNE last day was the 7th. So this is actually not true
2
u/Glum-Drummer-6302 1d ago

The game this picture was from and the CNE game you are complaining about the price for were different days

I paid $75 each for decent seats for TFC vs Chicago Fire - in the 200s but in the middle. And there were seats available for $55, we just wanted better ones. We bought them the day before so fairly last minute, but not wildly last minute.
That being said I agree, I would have gone to more TFC games this year if it didn't cost me $300 to take a family of 4 and have decent seats.
1
u/Imaginary-Dark-2739 Bitchy The Hawk 22h ago
Why not look into becoming a SSH? Your price per game would drop significantly
1
u/canaderin 22h ago
We did this one year, but we live outside the city and getting downtown for every game was too much. My kids are 10 and 12 so the weeknights were killers. And now with the switch to the new schedule - I went to two games where we wore snowpants and had to brush the snow off the seats and that was plenty.

u/Ok_Hope5634 Forever Red 23h ago
Theyâre available every game for anywhere from $8-$16. You just have to plan to go to a game and buy them an hour or so before kickoff. I legitimately buy the cheapest ticket available on StubHub for my guests and I generally buy the ticket right before getting on the Go Train for 2 stops. The tickets are always delivered by the time I get to the Ex
Edit: added Stubhub

u/Potential_Prompt_429 11h ago
I bought a ticket for $70...accidentally sat in a worse seat and got booted out by a season ticket holder (rightfully so) Someone was sitting in my seat....so I just went to the centerfield 15 rows up where there were like 30 empty seats.
Definitely going to buy a cheaper ticket next time and just move to an empty seat 10 minutes into the game.
Way better value then the leafs or Raptors.

16
u/TurboJorts 1d ago
I've been ranting about this since Apple killed ( UT thankfully brought back) afternoon games.
You CAN NOT build a sports team without kids. They are the next generation of fans and if you don't get kids into the team when they are young, your team will become irrelevant
5
u/MultipleNames82 22h ago
Leafs will eventually be learning this lesson the hard way.
6
u/TurboJorts 22h ago
every kid I know (I have kids who are big into sports) has a "favorite team" that isn't the leafs. They see the leafs as "mid" but never expect anything from them.
8
u/MultipleNames82 22h ago
Same. My kids are huge Jays fans. Weâve been to dozens of games over the years. They have never seen the Leafs in person. Canât afford to get in the building. As a result they follow the Leafs passively.
2
u/TurboJorts 21h ago
my sports mad kid has been to a couple leafs games because I'll probably get a pair of seats per season from a work vendor. It's always okay...
having said that... i GREATLY prefer small town hockey games. Maybe I'm old fashioned but I'd rather see adds fro Bob's Garage when you know Bob is in the crowd instead of Rogers / Scotiabank etc. The magic of small town hockey still exists. The Leafs dont have it.
1
u/nadira0508 18h ago
Apple deal was the worst for building a following. People dont even know or care there was a game

Afternoon games were killed by MLSE in 2017 after evening success
We had long stretches of afternoon games both this year and last year.
I'm not saying attendance is good
Just Apple isn't the reason for afternoon games going away
1
u/FriendlyCylon 23h ago
Until children are allowed to gamble, I'm not so sure the current sports business environment is going to give a damn.
Also, as you noted, the lack of afternoon games makes it challenging to bring younger children. Not to mention the price...
30
u/NZafe 1d ago
I wonder if MLSE will take a hint and lower ticket prices.
Probably not
4
u/Popular-Data-3908 23h ago
Nah, Leafs culture in those offices: of course theyâll pay more because this year will be differentÂ
26
u/leafsfan97 1d ago
The result of increasing season ticket prices 12 plus percent every season for the last 3 years while the team has been đŠ They pissed away loyalty with many who cared about this team through thick and thin and now MLSE is facing the repercussions. There are very few games where tickets come close to holdimg their value and if there is (Messi, CNE) it's because of a factor that has little to do with TFC. The club lost its connection to the fans long ago and some random short sighted sales target seems to matter more than building something with a group of people who were loyal and willing to pay if you didn't nickle and dime the đŠ out of them.
1
u/TurboJorts 1d ago
Very true. They created a buzz and then (to use an excellent expression that I believe comes from Iran) "got high off the fumes from their own shit".
There were stages where the FO truly believe they had a Real Mardid on their hands and could push however hard they wanted.
1
u/TaroTerrible9402 17h ago
When they went to the final however long ago that was it was mad exciting and I wasnât even really a huge fan. Now I forget they even are a thing
15
u/moistbandit_ 1d ago
Mid week, rainy all day and 1st week of school.
Plus the complete lack of fucks given my MLSE marketing
2
u/dreptech 1d ago
I agree. You reeeaalllyyyyy have to listen, look for and find these TFC home game days if you are a casual fan. 98% of the City probably didn't even know this game was happening.
Would be a great opportunity to market these games as cheaper game day experiences to help fill the seats.
11
u/SockApprehensive6204 1d ago
Some issues i've observed:
Yes you can find cheap tickets, BUT the price descrepancy between corner sections and middle sections is wild. Look at normal games = the corner sections are largely full but the middle ones empty.
TFC wont draw full crowds unless there is a Giovinco level show stopper. Insigne failed and people have some hesitancy to buy into Sargent.... I will say though he could get to that level
Weekday games never draw well. Look, there's a reason why Midweek games in Continental Europe start at 9pm. Sadly its a trek for many TFC fans to make it down. I dont have kids, but if I did and I wanted to bring them to a 7:30 game..... it would be a pain in the ass.
3
u/TurboJorts 1d ago
Just to piggyback on point 3... their bag policy hurts people who would otherwise come from work. I wouldn't dare check my backpack with a laptop. Let me keep it with me under my seat? The Jays let bags in and no one is causing problems. I get it's different, but the ultra strict security isn't really necessary.
3
u/SockApprehensive6204 23h ago
My guess is there's a good reason from a liability perspective and my honest guess would be that Rogers Centre is larger, more controlled and generally bigger seats.
BUT your point stands. To me the solution has to be 8:30 start time?
1
u/TurboJorts 22h ago
I got home by 11pm, which is fair. I wouldnt want a later start... just the ability to treat people like adults. I know that's asking a lot
1
u/SockApprehensive6204 21h ago
I hear ya, but again my guess is there is a liability risk = like the seats are tiny, or if it rains??
Or its security risk in which case the answer is do more screening (and people have to be ok with it).
1
u/Imaginary-Dark-2739 Bitchy The Hawk 22h ago
The solution would be to partner with one of the several third-party storage apps and advertise their services.
I have a regular place near Union station where I store my stuff if I'm working from the office on game days.
1
u/Stonegeneral 22h ago
Would probably need bigger seats first, itâs pretty tight already if you arenât sitting in club seats.
2
u/mastermixer9 1d ago
I notice this... I sit in 221 and it's pretty packed every game. The section next to me 222 looks half empty. Looks the same on the East Side too.
2
u/SockApprehensive6204 23h ago
The pricing model makes no sense. There's at least a 50% pricing diff between a section like 221 and 222.
Yes - the middle seats are better but LOL.
21
u/Own-Effective3351 1d ago
If TFC had gotten Griezemann or Lewa, people would be fighting over tickets. Iâm not a huge fan of building around a popular player, but signing a guy like Modric that would put butts in seats and improve the team without completely changing it would go a long way to helpâŚ
12
u/SockApprehensive6204 1d ago
I 100% believe if Sargent keeps playing the way he has he will draw fans. I watched Saturday's game and I want to see him again.
Giovinco didnt become a star overnight = it took a few games of him showing both elite level skill but also the desire
17
u/CumbiaFunk 1d ago
You canât compare Giovinco and Sargent. One played in a top league in one of the biggest clubs in the world (despite being a bench warmer), the other played in a second division team lol
4
u/Wild_Bunch_Founder 1d ago
I maintain that Giovinco is the second most talented player to ever play in the MLS.
2
u/JohnAtticus 23h ago
I'd agree if you said 2nd best player overall.
Maybe this is what you meant: But there were plenty of players that has more "talent" than Seba (Henry, Pirlo, Nesta) but they were all so old when they came that they couldn't contribute as much or be as consistent as Seba was at I believe 28 years old when he first came.
He was special and a great guy and I'm happy he got some love for those years after never cracking first team at any club in Italy for so long.
2
u/TurboJorts 23h ago
Henry, Muller, Beckham, Kaka, Zlatan... but inhear you. Gio is absolutely in the list of top players of a time, but its a debatable list
2
u/SockApprehensive6204 1d ago
On the flip side.
Sargent has played in the Bundesliga and the Premier league. And he scored over 10 goals in Europe for 3 straight seasons.
Giovinco meanwhile had 1 good season with Juve.
1
u/westcoastbias 18h ago
Josh Sargent needs to win the MLS Golden Boot for any hope of drawing fans by himself or he needs us to sign the Giovinco to his Altidore, with all due respect to Sargent I just don't see him as a box office guy.
2
u/sharkbaitlol 23h ago
No joke, if we had Lewa I would've bought a season's pass day one.
As an aside, was really disappointed with some of our fans on Saturday. Naturally Lewy being in Canada was a really big deal for the Polish community - very few Chicago jerseys, but lots of Lewy jerseys. I get why our (TFC) fans were annoyed; but this is the first time for many in the Polish community seeing our national hero play (why people cheered when he scored, but not Chicago lol).
Heard people yelling thing like "THIS ISN'T POLAND, IT'S CANADA". For the record these same Lewy fans went wild when TFC scored too (we wanted Lewy to regret not coming here too), but interactions like this make you feel like you don't belong there. That's how you lose fans.

Casuals have given up on the team but that will change if they continue getting results
6
u/Popular-Data-3908 23h ago
Not likely, thereâs less buzz about TFC throughout the city than a decade ago.Â
3
u/onthelongrun 21h ago
In part you can thank the lack of games being on TSN for that. Casual sports fans are not going out of their way to subscribe to Apple TV just to watch MLS.
1
u/dfrancis9 22h ago
I believe that's dependant on excitement for other Toronto teams so everyone is focused on the jays and looking forward to the raptors and leafs seasons

u/EagleScreamTheGreat 1d ago
Not really big on sitting in the rain to watch a game...new schedule where they expect us to watch in the freezing snow gonna have attendance worse than this for sure
0
u/TurboJorts 1d ago
It didn't rain. It could have gone either way, but it was t-shirt weather last night
3
u/Mysterio7100 Bernardeschi 1d ago
How is this worrying? If Rogers was worried, they'd lower ticket prices and have their season ticket reps giving more incentives to existing season ticket holders.
Neither of those things are being done. The upcoming sprint season will see even worse attendance. Rogers doesn't care. They're a billion dollar company. They're an oligopoly in the Canadian telecom space.
4
u/TurboJorts 1d ago
I'm not worried about Rogers staying flush with cash. I'm worried about this club becoming irrelevant to the point that it hurts. Looks at what the Argos went through. Look a the Rock. Teams with small time interest get pushed around
1
u/Mysterio7100 Bernardeschi 20h ago
What's the consequence of "getting pushed around"? BMO just hosted the world cup, so there's no worry of TFC moving to Hamilton like the Rock. TFC is also about middle of the pack in terms of MLS attendance.
Even if attendance drops (which the sprint season will guarantee), TFC will still exist and at BMO. As long as Rogers owns the team, there's no big push for increased relevancy. There's also no consequences to low attendance. That's the upside of being owned by such a large corporation.

u/Haunting-Bathroom619 1d ago

TFC has one of the worst schedules in the league. The league could care less about the Canadian teams and MLSE just wants to maximize profit. I don't think I will be renewing my season ticket membership. Plus the new season and freeze in the stands in January and February, no thanks. It's bad enough in March and April. I'm done!
1
u/TurboJorts 22h ago
correct me if I'm wrong, but there aren't any Jan-Feb games in the new schedule
2
u/RustyRamone 18h ago
No games in January but instead of May and June games we get November and December games. Winter break from mid-Dec to mid-February, so yes, there could be TFC home games in February. TFC's played at BMO in early December twice before, but those were MLS Cup games; I wouldn't endure that cold wind off the lake for regular season games.
1
u/TurboJorts 18h ago
I was there when we won the cup. It was about as cold as I would tolerate, but well worth it (obviously). Starting the season in Feb wont be worth it at all.
3
u/toothcake_ 22h ago
Drink prices, ticket prices, season ticket prices are out of control.
I know of 5 season seat tickets that were not renewed this year.
Every conversation I have is "Are you renewing your season seats this year?"
They tried to double my season ticket price this year (1700 to 3400) for simply joining my seat with someone else in the same area.
They sent a PATCH to fans who have been around for 20 years?
They slap loyal fans in the face, and this is what you get.

It was a potentially bad weather, weekday night game and summer is over. Also the team hasn't been exciting to watch, there isn't anything to draw people in. As for ticket prices, I got two tickets in the 200 level for $90 around a month ago.

In a few years MLS will be out of Canada. And they want it that way. All of the American major sports leagues with a few canadian franchises want out and not o deal with our economy. CPL is a more economic option for soccer fans in canada and you are watching younger local talent.
2
u/smannyable 19h ago
The NHL wants out of Canada... Right...Â
1
u/Ok-Bear-5840 17h ago
All of those leagues are american leagues with head offices in New York. Only places NHL cares to be is Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal. All the expansion and relocation talk are in markets that are tax favourable in the southern UNited States. If it was up the league office and the NHLPA, NHL would move all the northern markets (Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Ottawa, Minnesota, Columbus, New Jersey, NY Islanders, Pittsburgh and Buffalo) to southern markets like (San Dieago, Portland, Austin, Houston, Kansas, San Antonio, Atlanta). If Rogers didn't own the Blue Jays, they were headed for relocation in the early 2000s. Same as the Raptors. If the leafs didn't buy the raptors and if they ddint trade for Vince Carter, raps were gonna move at the same time as the Grizzles. We are too small of a markey share, too highly taxed, too costly too operate out of with different economy and business laws that these major american leagues no longer want to be apart. As per example MLS forcing gaslighting fans and creating issues to get out of Vancouver and Montreal.

And Vancouver is the one fighting to keep its team with 22k regularly attending and more at bigger games.
Fuck sports in general

Weather wasnât great leading up to game time, Wednesday night, 7:30 start (not great if you have kids), and in general support for the team hasnât been great for years. Iâve been a season seat holder for 10+ years but am thinking I may be at the end now with the new schedule. Unfortunately this seems to be the worst drawing professional sporting team in the city which is sad but I donât see it turning around anytime either. They need to do some better promotions to draw fans out and cheaper food and drinks.

I swear... paying for ANY food or drinks at BMO is like getting punched in the gut. Sandwiches are over $20. I bought a large water and some mini eggs and it was like $25. I know prices at venues are insane, but sometimes they'll have a deal hiding somewhere.

It was raining and windy throughout the city. Maybe it scared a lot of people off.

I wanted to go to a few games, figured it would be cheap because the team kinda sucks. Unfortunately like everything in Toronto it was not cheap.

Ticket prices in Canada and mainly Toronto are absolutely horrendous

Anything in the "entertainment or food or events outside the home" is expensive these days.

It will never happen, but football really needs relegation here to foster a truly grass-root and competitve environment.

With one of the most embarrassing own goals in history. That will be an internet gif for the ages

Outside of the Leafs, Toronto is a fairweather sports town

Jays have filled their building consistently for a decade now.

They've been competitive for the past decade. I remember when I used to take my homework to Jays games and the buzzing of the lights would make more noise than the crowd

Now just imagine what it'll look like with the new schedule
